Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Design Wall Monday – 3/8/2021

I’ve reached the halfway point in the computerized quilting of the wedding quilt. This is the center block of the quilt.

I started the next row of circle feathers and got a notice I was running out out of bobbin thread. I decided that was a good time to stop as I need to wind more bobbins.  I started with 4 bobbins. I’ll wind another 4, but expect to need a couple more before I finish the rest of the quilting.

While the computer was quilting, I was cutting and piecing.  A number of years ago I cut 2-1/2″ strips from all of my music fabric to make a jelly roll race backing for a quilt.  When I was finished I had a 44″ x 70″ piece left over. Over the past few days I’ve cut strips from the music fabric – as it turns out over twice as many as I needed to add a enough to make this 60″ x 70″. Of course now that it’s “a top”, I’m not sure I like it.  I feel it needs “something”.   So, I’m not sure this is really a “top” yet.

I’m linking up to Small Quilts and Doll Quilts for Design Wall Monday.

Pam, I had a thought about the music quilt. Why not applique a large music note, G clef, or other musical symbol in black on top of the strips? (For an example, see Shelly Pagliai’s “AmpersAnd” quilt she made https://www.etsy.com/listing/233877209/ampersand-throw-quilt-pattern-pdf?ref=shop_home_feat_2) at Prairie Moon Quilts (prairiemoonquilts.com)

I think that might help you pull it all together.

  2. Love the quilting going on… that’s a lot of thread being used there but the results are so worth it! Do you have to move the head to each new block? As to your music top. I think the biggest issue is a viewer has no where that allows the eyes to rest. I’m not sure I would be brave enough to try any of these suggestions but here goes: pick an amount of rows and every, say, unstitch and stitch in a calming strip. (I can image a black, dark brown, either the same width or possibly twice as wide. Or unstitch after 10 rows and cut them into squares and then make half sq triangles out of them with a beige, black, brown… something that calms down the overall busy-ness. (Do I sound like a broken record? Or you could make 16 patches with a sashing. (You know what I’ll suggest for the sashing….) I’ll re-state — I don’t know if I would be brave enough but it is making me think about some 16 patches I have that I am not using…. Good luck trying to decide what to do.
