Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Made My Decision

I’ve made my decision.  I’m going with Option #5.  There are plenty of things I should be working on, but now that I’ve made my decision I can’t wait to start on this.  I’m afraid I won’t be able to show any more pictures until the end of April as this is a mystery quilt.  Well — maybe I’ll show the back after it is quilted like I did for “Gift Wrapped“.

Stop back tomorrow to see “Gift Wrapped”.  I can finally reveal it.

Working With My Stash

I love working with my stash — but then I love scrappy quilts.  This is good since I have very little yardage in my stash — it’s mostly FQs.  However, there are occasions when FQs simply won’t do.  My next new project is one of those.  Fortunately I only need 1/4 to 3/8 yard of 4 different fabrics.  I’m keeping this simple – red, blue, gold and white/cream.

I’ve found the red, blue and gold and now have to pick the white/cream.  Who knows by the time I finish this post I may have my decision.

Option 1 and 2 (left and right)

Option 3 and 4

Option 5

I tried to keep the lighting the same.  I think I’m leaning toward Option # 5.  While I try to make up my mind, I think I’ll see about cutting the red, blue & gold fabric.

Squirrels

File this under “Stuff”.

I have two Black Walnut trees in my front yard.  Some years there are an abundance of walnuts and others not so much.  I’ve figured out why this year is not a good year.

Squirrels.

All day long when I look out my window I see the squirrels running across the yard gathering the nuts.  Yesterday afternoon I took my cell phones (I was waiting on a call), Kindle and camera and sat out on the front porch.  The pictures will enlarge if you click on them.

Heading Up the Tree

Around he goes

Do you see him?

There he is.

Made it down with 2 nuts!

Here comes another

No Tail!

By this time my I was on the phone.  We have rabbits in the back yard, so at first I thought it was a baby bunny — but it’s the wrong season.  Sure enough this guy went up the tree. As far as I know rabbits don’t climb trees, to it must be a tail-less squirrel.

At this point I went back inside.  This morning I opened the door to get the mail and found this.

A gift?

What’s On My Design Wall

I really wanted to show the completed Texas Braid today, but I just didn’t get it done.  I’m about a 1/4 of the way through the quilting and hope to finish it this week.  I’m on call Friday evening and most of the day Saturday, so if I end up running around doing errands all week I’ll at least have the weekend — unless I get called.

Stash Report

Quick report this week.  Nothing in.  The good news is I have cut the rest of the fabric for my LeMoyne stars and have Started Quilting my Texas Braid quilt — so I can count the backing this week.   White polka dots on a bright green.

Fabric Added Last Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 99.634 yards

Fabric Used Last Week: 5.222yards
Fabric Used to Date: 142.328 yards

What’s On My Design Wall

Nothing new this week — just some of the pieces I need for the additional LeMoyne Stars I need for the current quilt. I also pieced a batt from batting scraps, made a test run LeMoyne star using pieces cut with the Companion Angle ruler  and pieced a bit on my Log Cabin quilt — the one that’s supposed to be my leader/ender project.

Check back later in the week to see if I get my LeMoyne Stars made (need 4 full stars and 12 half stars).  In the meantime check out what others are up to by following the links over at Patchwork Times.

Stash Report

Not a whole lot of sewing was done this week.  I did however piece this Le Moyne Star.   I know it clearly doesn’t go in my Compass Lone Star quilt.  But I’m running very short on fabric and wanted to make certain that I was going to cut it accurately the first time, because there won’t be a second chance.

So, here are the numbers.

Fabric Added Last Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 99.634 yards

Fabric Used Last Week: .20 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 137.106 yards

Net Used for 2011: 37.472 yards

Can’t Follow Directions

Or in this case a simple picture. Here’s my EQ drawing of the log cabin block that is my current leader/ender project.

All summer I’ve sewn little red squares to little light squares and then those pieces to little logs.  I’ve made 180 of them.

Today while I was working on a practice LeMoyne Star, I was ready for the next log – a dark 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 piece.  I looked at the picture and that’s when I realized that I sewed all of my light logs to the wrong side of first unit.  So, I decided to make a block so I have a “good” reference.

In the grand scheme of things it ‘looks’ right, so all is well.  If any one says otherwise, I’ll just tell them my EQ drawing was for the back of the block.

An Artist Rendering

I’m no artist, but I can cut and paste in Paint.  I think this is the layout I’m going with.  The quilt will finish roughly 60 x 72 a good size lap quilt.  I don’t have enough of the blue batik for all of the LeMoyne Stars, so, I’ve got to find an alternate.

Option # 1 is this blue floral which is in the center star next to the yellow (background triangle is for reference).

Option # 2 is the backing fabric I’m using.

Option # 3 is a fabric I bought to finish a double wedding ring quilt I found at an estate sale. It’s not right for the DWR, or now that I compare it the batik this quilt.

Option #4 is a man’s shirt I found at a thrift store a while back.  I pulled it out just for fun, but I think this one is probably the best match in color. Now I just have to decide if  I can live with the subtle plaid.

What do you think?

What’s On My Design Wall

I nearly forgot this was Monday.  We’ve been doing some plumbing, and it’s never as easy or inexpensive as you think it’s going to be.

Before we got tangled up in the plumbing (which still is not finished) I made one more LeMoyne Star for the Compass Lone Star quilt.  Then had to work up a new quilt layout.  It’s still a work in progress, but I will be making another 4 LeMoyne Stars for the bottom of the quilt.

I really thought I had enough of the batik to make this quilt much bigger — leaning toward 80″ square.  In reality I’ll be lucky enough to get a good throw.

The fabric on the bottom is what I have in the quilt.  Only  the second blue from the left has more than 1/2 yard left, the rest somewhere between 6 – 12 inches.  Forget buying more.  These fabrics are at least 25 years old.

When I started on the quilt in 2007, I tried to supplement the fabrics.  That’s when I found the light blue batik in the middle and the fabrics on the top.  The light blue on top row I’m using for backing.  I think not only is the quilt a ‘quilt-as-you-go” , but a “design-as-you-go”.  Who knows what it will end up looking like.
