Ocean Waves is Quilted

Saturday was the day to quilt Ocean Waves.  Would you believe its quilted SIX weeks before I need it?  Of course, it still needs binding, a label, pillowcase and washing.

While DH was making a new network connector for my computer after my 4 or 5, maybe six failed attempts, I trimmed the quilt.  This picture is before I trimmed and that’s all the backing and batting I had when I got the bottom of the quilt.  Note to self — buy 1/4 yard more that I think I need when buying wide backing and cut the batting 5 inches longer.

Once it was trimmed, I started thinking about the pillowcase.  Ignore the quilting — there won’t be any on the pillowcase — but what do you think about this idea?

The pink was used as the backing and will be the same width on both sides of the pinwheels — I think I’m leaning toward the narrow width.

Stash Report

This week’s report covers two weeks since I was having computer troubles last week.

Week before last I purchased the background fabric for the alternative blocks to the Blue & Brown Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler Swap blocks and fabric to finish up Candy Sunflower Seeds.  This week I purchased the FQs pictured above. I also won a Impressions of Kyoto Charm Pack.

As for fabric used it was all backing. Week before last I quilted my Red, White & Blue Mystery Quilt Tablerunner (I’ll show it on the Design Wall on 4/23). This past week it was backing for Ocean Waves. Yes, it is quilted and even trimmed. I used a wide backing and counted it in as 2 1/2 yards, so I’m counting it out as 2 1/2 yards.

It’s a good thing Judy is doing the weekly stash reports — I almost bought more FQs, but decided to work from my stash for the next couple of blocks I need to make. See if it’s helping anyone else by following the links over at Patchwork Times.

UFO Progress

The monthly UFO Progress report is late.  First it was computer issues and then it was procrastination, thinking I’d get the two blocks finished.  It hasn’t happened yet, so here’s my report.

The March # was 8.  That was the Ohio Star that I finished early on and the bells, which I did get fused in place — after midnight on April 1st.  So, I’m only halfway there for the month of March. I did get two Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler blocks made, but I did no quilting on my Double Wedding Ring.   March apparently wasn’t a good month.

So, onward to this month’s UFO #.  It is 10, which is the Holly Wreath.  So far so good.  I’ve cut out all of the leaves and picked my background fabric.  I still need to find fabric for the bow and cut out the berries.  Once I get these pieces fused into place, I’ll stitch down the applique on both blocks.

The links over at Patchwork Times will show how others are doing on their UFOs.

What’s On My Design Wall

I’m having computer troubles, so dealing with that is taking away from my quilting time.  Last night about 7, I remembered that the April 1st JT2 blocks and assembly were out.  So to get something “new” done, I quickly sewed the blocks I have done together.  I’m still struggling with Grandma’s Favorite Compass and we won’t even talk about the large needle turn applique block from this month.  I’m all for stretching my limits, but those two blocks back to back are pressing all of my buttons.

Check out what others have on their design wall over at Patchwork Times and I’ll be back later with my UFO report and Stash Report.

SBS Blocks

Two more blocks have been completed for my Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler — H9 Weathervane and M5 Ohio Star. I also made them up in brown and blue to go with my SBS Swap blocks.  I’m itching to start assembling that quilt  — of course I have to make the setting blocks, which requires a trip to the quilt shop for background fabric.

What’s On My Design Wall

All of the quarter sections of Boxy Stars are complete. They will probably stay up on the wall for a week or two as I still need to finish this month UFO challenge. I need two more blue and brown Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler blocks for the layout I’ve picked, so I’ll make the two blocks twice this week — one pair in 30’s for my main SBS quilt and a pair for the swap quilt. I’ve also started piecing Grandma’s Favorite Compass from the Just Takes 2 quilt. I could be at it a while.

Stash Report

All my in and out fabric this week is related to the Ocean Waves quilt.  I finished the borders, cut the binding and then bought the backing.  It’s not quite a wash.

Counting While Tired

Friday night I finished up the center of Ocean Waves and wanted to start on the borders.  It will have 3 borders — a 1 1/2″ turquoise border, a border of 3″ pinwheels and then a 6″ turquoise border.  As much as I wanted to move forward, I must have realized I was too tired to measure and cut.

So I counted and sorted my HST squares for the border.

I decided I needed 42 more pinwheels to complete the border.  I made the HST over the weekend and finished up the pinwheels Monday night.

Then I measured the quilt, assured myself a 1 1/2″ inner border was all that I needed and started sewing pinwheels together.

In the end, there were 26 extra pinwheels.  Good thing I didn’t try to measure and cut — apparently I can’t even count when I’m tired.

Stop back later this week and I’ll should have a picture of the complete top.

What’s On My Design Wall

Although it’s not my design wall, these are the last of the HST that need to be sewn into pinwheels for the border of the Ocean Wave  quilt. I finished the center Friday night.

I should be focused on this quilt.  I don’t need it until mid-May, but I wouldn’t mind having it done early.  So what did I do most of the weekend?  I played in EQ working on layouts for my Blue and Brown Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler Swap Blocks.  I don’t have the blocks drawn yet — may not draw them, so here they are up on my design wall.

They are not in the order I’ll put them in the quilt, and I think I’ve decided to set them straight instead of on-point.  I’m borrowing this layout from Trisha Chubb which was in the SBS book.

(Ignore the fact that I don’t have everything colored correctly, I’m too lazy to go back and fix it–again.)

The blocks will float inside of the chains.  It’s easier to picture when the blocks are outlined.

The large center block and the cornerstones will be cut from my small stash of left over blue CW fabrics.  Since my largest piece is only a FQ, I’ll make them scrappy.  The brown chains will come from my barely larger brown CW stash — again I don’t think I have anything bigger than a FQ.  It’s the background fabric I’ve got to figure out what to do.  I’m pretty certain I want the same fabric throughout, and with the possible exception of some muslin bought years ago for testing dressmaking patterns or the Kona Snow I have in my 30’s box for my 30’s SBS quilt, I know I don’t have a length of fabric large enough.  A trip to the quilt store will be required.

So, I guess I best get back to those pinwheels and finish up the Ocean Wave quilt — which will also need a backing the next time I’m out.
