What I’m Working on Wednesday – 10/1/25

It’s Wednesday and the 1st of the month so this will be a 2 for 1 post – What I’m Working On and the Stash Report.

First up binding.  On the machine is Sheryl. The binding is attached to 2 sides.  Waiting in the wings are Monterrey Medallions and Cascades.  The binding for the last two are sewn together and need pressing.

I’m also trying to decide what fabric to use in the Twirling Leaves class I’m taking later this month through the Gulf States Quilt Association. I plan to pull from my stash and am leaning towards batiks.  The question is a light background or a dark background.

I’m leaning towards the purple.

I suppose I should also report on my September goals and list my October goals, but I’ll save that for another post.

Mini Bow Tuck Bag

Last week the race was on.  Could I get my bag finished before I left town.  I’m happy to report that I did!  This is Mini Bow Tuck.

The interior has plenty of pockets. I added a snap to keep the bag close.

I showcased the feathers on the back.  This was a pretty quick project and had I not been tired from work, I think I could have knocked it out in less time.  I guess we’ll find out, as I’m going to use the other custom fabric to make another bag. I want to have it done by Friday!

So where did I go for the weekend? I participated in the Gulf States Quilt Association’s Pursuit of Excellence. These are the 2 blocks we made.  I need to turn the bottom right corner of the cardinal.  I learned a couple of cool things. To keep your rulers from slipping we were given some of the thinnest shelf liner I’ve seen.

I think it works better than the Quilters Select Rulers or Grippy, both of which I love. I can however see instances where these little square would not work, so I’ll just add this to my arsenal of non-slip ideas.

Another tip was to use the rulers you have instead of specialty rulers from trimming HST. I’m making 2 1/2″ finished HST so need to square them to 3″. Orienting the ruler so the 3″ on the 2 sides of the ruler are on the stitching line.  I can see using this on 3-triangle squares (like the beak of the cardinal) lining the 45-degree line on the seam between the quarter triangles. On a regular HST, I’d rather use my Bloc-Loc ruler.

Finally I picked up fabric to make another shop sample on way out of town. When I got home Saturday night I cut out this quilt. I started sewing it together yesterday and realized I don’t have enough contrast in the pinwheel blocks.  Back to the shop I went. I’m swapping the green print out for a light gray/silver grunge.  I’ll work on that tonight.

Goals for the Week of April 7, 2025

I don’t know how much quilting I’ll get done this week, but I absolutely need to get the batik version of this block made this week.  These are this quarter’s Gulf States Quilt Association Lotto blocks and the meeting is Saturday.  I’m not a big Kaffe fan, but I think I found the way to use the fabric — fussy cut.  My fabric now looks like Swiss cheese.  I bought 3 different black & white prints the other day, then only used the zebra, pulling the other 2 from my stash.  It looks like fingerprints to me.

Next on the list is to get the borders on the dragon shop sample. I really wanted it done to take to the guild meeting tonight, but got distracted.

The 3rd item is the Blooming Nine-Patch. This is this quarters sew along with GSQA. I hope to have all the blocks done, but I don’t know if I’ll get them sewn together.  We’ll have to see what this week brings.  These are the last 2 fabrics for the quilt.

As for my 2025 master list of UFO projects, nothing has been marked off since the middle of February.  I’ve been busy — and now I’ve added 2 new projects!  I may count the shop sample as my panel quilt, but that really defeats the purpose of listing a panel quilt.  I also want to make another Crazy Eights quilt with the FQ I bought at the AQS show. “It’s not hard and won’t take too long”  I think is how I ended up with so many UFOs.  So for now this will just be a PIG.

Stash Busting Report – January 24, 2025

I’ve taken a step backwards in the size of my stash, but it’s not my fault.  A few weekends ago I attended the Gulf States Quilt Association’s quarterly meeting and won a door prize. Included in my package were 4 Christmas fat quarters.  I even stopped at a new to me quilt shop and didn’t buy anything – admittedly only because they didn’t have any Kaffe fabrics.  I need 3 Kaffe FQs to make the Kaffe version of the Lotto block. I wasn’t thinking when I picked that colorway.  I also need to make a Batik version and a Black & White version.  I’m confident in my Batik stash and I’m 95% certain I can find enough Black & White fabrics.

Here are my numbers:

Fabric Added Since Last Report: 1 yards
Fabric Added to Date:  1 yards

Fabric Used Since Last Report: 0 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 4.625 yards

Net Used for the year -3.625 yards
