Monterrey Medallions

Monterrey Medallions is finished and ready to be delivered this weekend.

This is an Atkinson Designs pattern from 2005.  I’m sure I bought the book shortly after it came out and I’ve always wanted to make this quilt. At one point I started kitting the stars for a multi-color quilt before scrapping that idea.

What I’m Working on Wednesday – 10/1/25

It’s Wednesday and the 1st of the month so this will be a 2 for 1 post – What I’m Working On and the Stash Report.

First up binding.  On the machine is Sheryl. The binding is attached to 2 sides.  Waiting in the wings are Monterrey Medallions and Cascades.  The binding for the last two are sewn together and need pressing.

I’m also trying to decide what fabric to use in the Twirling Leaves class I’m taking later this month through the Gulf States Quilt Association. I plan to pull from my stash and am leaning towards batiks.  The question is a light background or a dark background.

I’m leaning towards the purple.

I suppose I should also report on my September goals and list my October goals, but I’ll save that for another post.

Napkins and Missing Items

A few weeks ago at the quilt retreat, I primarily worked on the Monterrey Medallions quilt top. I finished it late Saturday night.  Sunday morning, I pulled out the half finished napkins to finish up.  Immediately afterwards I packed my gear to head home.

Unlike other retreats, I immediately unpacked my gear, but I couldn’t find my book or the cute sewing machine cover that Martha and Pamela, a mother/daughter duo, made for everyone.  I sent an email to everyone a the retreat, but no one had seen it. I went back through all the pockets on my Tutto sewing machine bag. Still no book or cover.  This past weekend I decided to go through the bag one more time.

Look what I found!

What I’m Working on Wednesday – 9/24/2025

First up in Monterrey Medallions. I took it off the frame and trimmed it just after midnight this morning. That makes 3 quilts ready to bind.

Here’s a picture of it on the frame. I love the backing I ultimately went with.

While it was quilting I worked on Windmill Weave.  Apparently my math was not mathing when I was figuring out how wide to cut the strips.  But on the bright side I think I’ll be able to get the backing from a single width of fabric. I think next time I’ll go with 1/2″ wider strips and a larger center block.  I have a stack of white & print strips sewn together.

Monterrey Medallion Is A Top

This past weekend I attended my guilds annual quilt retreat.  I was able to get there by 10 or 10:30 Thursday morning — the earliest I’ve ever shown up – and I did not have to take work calls or attend a funeral over the weekend. I finished the Monterrey Medallion quilt top by 10 PM Saturday night. There was one foray to a quilt shop about 40 minutes away to look for a backing fabric.

I think this is the 3rd fabric I bought for this quilt. It’s not what I went after, but it’s even better than what I was looking for.  While I was there I picked up 2 other pieces of fabric to make Windmill Weave.

I hope to get the quilt loaded tonight.

Two Finishes!

Ritzy Quilting Company received in the Wild Orchid line of fabric earlier this month. I made a quick shop sample.  Very quick.  In just 2 hours I had the center of the quilt pieced. The pattern is “The Easiest 3 Yard Quilt Pattern Ever!” by sewcanshe.

I tweaked the borders, cutting the inner border 2 1/2″ and the outer border 4 1/2″. When purchasing the fabric I opted to get an extra 1/4 yard of each fabric.

After binding the quilt I took it up to the shop where it hangs on the wall behind the display of the fabric.

The second finish is A Vintage Christmas Sampler

I made this quilt as part of the Kansas Troubles Quilter Quilt A Long.  I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a holiday quilting finished timely.  Currently it is hanging on the quilt rack in my bedroom waiting to be put on the bed.

Progress has been made on Monterrey Medallions. The rest of the stars are cut out, I just need to sit and sew.

Catching Up

The time simply has gotten away from me.  Between work, quilting and filling in at my friend’s shop, blogging has fallen to the bottom of the list of things to do.  First up, the August Stash Report.

The Stash Report

Fabric Added Since Last Report: 13.759 yards
Fabric Added to Date:  194.442 yards

Fabric Used Since Last Report: 32.67 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 147.139 yards

Net Fabric Stash: 47.303 yards

So did I meet the the August Goals? Some of them.

    • Finish Cascades. It just needs the borders before it can be quilted. – It still needs borders.
    • Keep up with the KTQ A Vintage Sampler Quilt Quilt along.  I’m currently 2 blocks behind. Looking at the schedule we should finish the top by the end of the month. – Quilted!
    • Monterrey Medallions.  I’d like to get the blocks made for this quilt. – In progress.
    • Sheryl. I just need to sew the binding strips together and get this one bound. – Still waiting
    • Auction Quilt Top. It’s a bad picture, but I need to rip out what little quilting I’ve done. – Still needs ripping
    • Shop Samples.  Yes there are two quilts in the picture and I want them done by Monday! Guess what I’m doing first? – Accomplished!
    • There is a customer quilt on the frame. I should get it done tonight – I don’t think there are any thunderstorms expected. – Accomplished!
    • Decoupage fabric to glass for a friend. – Accomplished!
    • Prepare the mystery quilt clues (the next one is due Monday!) – Accomplished!

This is my Vintage Christmas Sampler by Kansas Troubles Quilters.  I caught up, got the borders on and even got it quilted over the long weekend.  It was promptly put in the stack to be bound and I started Monterrey Medallions. There are 4 different blocks in this quilt – the center star, Woodpile, Floating Stars and Jacob’s Ladder blocks. The floating stars are up next.

So what’s on the agenda for September?

  • Finishing instructions for the guild Mystery Quilt
  • Finish customer quilt which is on the frame
  • Borders and quilt Cascade
  • Finish and quilt Monterrey Medallions
  • Quilt Ruby’s Vintage Christmas Sampler
  • Mini Bow Tucks
  • Kit Clara
  • 20 Zipper Bags (take to retreat)
  • Rip out quilting from Auction Quilt
  • Kandy Korn Kitty Top  (take to retreat)
  • Assemble Riviana (take to retreat)
  • Bind Vintage Christmas Sampler
  • Bind Sheryl

I’m thinking some of this is not going to get done this month.

Stash Report Week # 38

I love my friends. I love that they want to give me their scraps and cast off fabric. It enriches my stash both in size and by adding sparkle to my own scraps since our tastes are not the same.

However, I simply can’t sew fast enough to keep up!

In the picture above, there is approximately 40 yards. I say approximately, because I weighed the scraps and figured 4 yards = 1 pound, more or less.

On the other hand, I cut the cornerstones for my DWR, pulled and cut pieces for my Monterry Medallion and Milky Way quilt, and made two Jacob Ladder blocks to send off for a charity quilt. It just doesn’t add up to make a dent.

Fabric Added this Week: 40.125 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 280.708 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 1.81 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 72.504 yards

Net Stash: +208.204 yards (161.708 was gifted)
