Stash Report

Nothing in this week — well, a friend did just give me a stack of blocks, but that doesn’t count on the Stash Report — the Tops in Progress list, maybe.

As for fabric usage the beginning and ending of the week saw me cutting fabric for the dragonfly quilt. In between I worked on the Dresden Plate quilt. I cut the dark fabrics for the dragonfly quilt early in the week and then put it up to continue working on the Dresden Plate.  By the end of the week I had to cut more background squares for the Dresden Plate.  From each width of fabric I got two backgrounds and a dozen squares for the Dragonfly quilt.  So, I guess I’m committed to the solid black for the Dragonflies.  I think I have 6 1/2 yards left, plenty to do the borders and bindings of both quilts and then some.  And yes, I added the black squares to the bag of fabric for the dragonflies and will work on them at the sew-in next month – unless I finish the Dresden Plate before then.

Of course, in surfing the web, I found a postage stamp quilt that I started drooling over.  I had to give myself a stern talking to about NOT digging into my 1 1/2″ strip box and cutting squares to use as leader/enders.  I don’t want another new project in my life at this point in time — not to mention that I have a stack of bricks to stitch together for a Fun with Bricks quilt, which I started as my leader/ender project last month.

On to the report!

Stash Report

I really haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.  If it wasn’t one thing it was another.  There wasn’t much quilting/piecing going on this past week, although if you looked at my ironing board this afternoon you wouldn’t believe me.

Can you see those Dresden Plate petals at the top left of the picture?  Those are the replacement petals I cut.  I went ahead and cut 4 sets – one to replace the plate I clipped before discovering I sewed it together wrong; one to replace the 2nd plate I sewed wrong and is already attached to the interfacing and finally two to replace the two I previously sewed and aren’t aligned correctly.  Are we sure this is a UFO?  Since I appear to be starting from scratch it almost seems like a new quilt.

The rest of the mess on the ironing board is the fabric I pulled for my Dragonfly quilt.  The black is the same black I’m using for the Dresden Plate.  I’m not too fond of it since it attracts lint from the entire metro area.  But that is a six yard piece (or maybe there’s six yards after I  pull the two yards I need), so I can’t justify buying more fabric.  I even went to the quilt store yesterday with a gift certificate in my pocket and didn’t buy any fabric – although this FQ did come home with me.

This was my “prize” for finishing Three Sisters’ Choice.  It’s one of the quilts on my UFQ list at the quit shop.  I picked this FQ since it could be worked into the Dragonfly quilt.

I’ve got half of the fabric cut.  I still have to cut the black squares and rectangles before I can begin sewing.

So, why am I cutting fabric for the Dragonfly quilt?  I finished embroidering them this week.

Working on these I discovered a couple of things.  A freshly sharpened Crayon delivers more color than one which has been used.  Also, to get the blue ink out of the fabric, I filled a bowl with soapy water and soaked the pieces for “a while”.  They rinsed clean.

Pardon me while I record the Crayola Crayon Colors and DMC Floss #s.  I figure if I do this now, I’ll have the information if  I need it later.  The DMC #s may not be current.  Some of this floss could be from before I got married 25 years ago.  The crayons are from a box with a 1990 copyright date on it.

Color Crayola Crayon DMC Floss
Yellow Yellow 307
Purple Violet (Purple) 333
Pink Magenta 602
Orange Red Orange 608
Green Yellow Green 907
Blue Cerulean 996

Stash Report

No new fabric came in the house this week and there was a trip to a LQS.  The centers for my Dresden Plates really need to be round, so I tracked down Bigger Perfect Circles.  They are a heat-resistant plastic, so I’m able to prepare the center circles so they are nice and smooth.

I ran a running stitch along the edge of the circle and then pulled it up with the template in side.  Then I “painted” the turned under edge with a bit of starch before heat setting the crease.  It works really well.  Here’s a picture of the back of my circles:

On another note,  Three Sister’s Choice has definitely been given the Quality Control Cat stamp of approval.  Yesterday morning I was napping in the recliner when the phone rang.  When I jumped up the quilt ended up on the floor.  When I wandered back into the room a couple of hours later Seven was napping on the quilt.  She did NOT want to give it up.  I may just have to make her a quilt of her own.

As for the stash usage, I used about 5/8 yard on the Dresden Plates — now if I can get them appliquéd in the next couple of days so I can start quilting.

Stash Report

With all the snow last week, I didn’t get out much, so no new fabric came in the house.

I pieced the backing for the mystery quilt using nearly all of the leftover fabric.  I worked a bit on the DWR, pieced a few tiny Ohio Stars and make the pajama pants.

Stash Report

This was a really good week.  I prepared the backing and binding for Three Sisters’ Choice and the backing for the Mystery Quilt and made a pillow case.   So lots of fabric out.  No fabric in for quilts, but I did purchase three yards of fabric to make some pajamas.  Since it’s cotton and the extra fabric will end up in my stash, I’ve decided to count it in.

Stash Report

This past week the border fabric for my UFO#6 – Sister Choice blocks came in.  Just in time so I can finish this quilt top, meeting January’s UFO goal.  The purchased fabric was off set by the fabric I used in the mystery quilt.  I’m about halfway through writing those instructions.  That’s something else I need to get done by the end of the month so I have time to test them.  Good thing there’s another weekend in this month.

Stash Report

I’ve spent the week sewing Sister’s Choice blocks from my previously counted fabric, so no new fabric out.  No stops at quilt shops this week, although I did search the web for border fabric.  Nothing like making a quilt from a single line of fabric which is 3 years old.  I’m going to have to make a decision soon about the border.

Stash Report

Three hours at the LQS and I still have used more fabric this year than I’ve purchased.

Saturday was the 2010 UFQ Trunk Show at Heritage Fine Fabrics.  I signed up to get 5 quilts either ready to quilt or quilted and bound – I finished 4 of the 5.  Over the year as we finished each project, we received a FQ as a reward.  At the trunk show, we receive one ticket for each finish for the drawing.  I won a $15 gift certificate.  So, there’s more fabric in my future.

My only purchase was some Lite Steam a Seam 2 for the Crossword Puzzle quilt – which doesn’t count in the stash numbers.  I also signed up for the 2011 UFQ (UnFinished Quilts) Challenge.

Ready-to-Quilt

Stash Report

Last stash report of the year. All in all I’m pleased with my results.  I used in excess of 100 yards of fabric.  My fabric purchases were kept to a minimum – 94 yards, although  I inherited or was gifted another 81 yards.

The pincushions above are the results of my last-minute sewing.  I read about the pincushions on The Cozy Quilter’s blog, which in turn led me to the Moda Bake Shop.  The pink, black and white pincushion at the top is HUGE.  It really needs some more stuffing.  I ended up using 45-degree diamonds cut from 2 1/2 inch strips.  They finished at about 4 1/2″ in diameter.  I stuffed my pincushions with about 1 1/4 cup of crushed walnut shells.  I finished it off with button from my button box.

Now the final numbers:
