Guild Challenges

I belong to two local quilt guilds, Brandon Quilters and Quilters By Hearts Desire. Both of these guilds have a President’s Challenge.  This year the Brandon Quilters challenge to to make pillowcases to give with our community quilts.  So this is the year I will finally get these pillowcases made.  My notes indicate I kitted these up for donation in 2018 to make for my previous guild.  Who knows why they didn’t get made.

The Quilters By Hearts Desire challenge is “Roll of the Dice”.  I found this challenge last summer at the Minnesota Quilt Show.  Each member rolled a pair of dice. I rolled a 3 and a 4, so my options were the design element of Rectangles/Square and the dominate color of Green or flipping it Involving Strips/Strings and Blue.  I opted for the first choice.

Both of these challenges have been added to my 2026 list of goals.

A Very Good Quilty Day

Friday was a very good quilty day.  First I was paid for quilting I did that I expected no payment for. Then I recounted the stars.  That bottom right star is #113, the next to the last star journaled.  This means I have all the stars that I’ve made. Star # 114 is in my Star-A-Day box along with Star #115 which I had not journaled.  I suspect it’s because I lost 2 of the swatches.  I pressed that star, did my journaling and glued in the one piece of fabric I did find.  Only 250 stars to go.

Then I quilted this cute Crayon quilt.  Back in August, Brandon Quilters had a program on Crayon quilts and everyone made a block during the meeting.  One of our members took the blocks home and she brought 2 quilt tops to the meeting on Monday.  I found some pink floral fabric in my stash for the backing.  When I get the other one quilted I’ll give them back for her to bind. Ultimately they will be Community Quilt.  I have the backing made for the 2nd quilt, I just need to figure out how I’m going to quilt it.

While this was quilting, I continued working on Twirling Leaves. Just one more block to finish!

Brandon Quilters President’s Challenge

As President of Brandon Quilters, I issued a challenge to our members to make 8″ finished Double 4-Patch blocks to be sewn into community quilts.  The challenged was issued at our January meeting to bring in blocks no later than our April meeting. To date 112 blocks have been made.  The plan is to use 35 blocks set 5 x 7 to make lap quilts.   One quilter brought in a complete quilt last month and her daughter brought in in a quilt top. Last night I quilted it.

This quilt measures 40″ x 56″, so I was able to pull  1 1/2 yards of fabric from my stash to use for the backing.

Brandon Quilters President’s Challenge

After moving to Mississippi I joined two quilt guilds – I was already a member of the state guild, Mississippi Quilters Association. The president of the Brandon Quilters issued a challenge.  Make a potholder and bring it to the April meeting. She even provided a fat quarter for us to get started out of her stash. I was given the brown with white flowers.  I used it in the center, binding and backing. It just shy of 8″ square.

For this Folding Star, I used the Plum Easy Patterns’ directions. Given how thick the top is I opted to use Insul-Bright instead of batting.

For a while, I thought this might become a UFO.  I was struggling to get the binding ends joined.  It’s normally not an issue for me, but I haven’t bound anything for over a year and I didn’t have much room to work in. It wasn’t until I was joining the binding on the MQA quilt that I could see how to do the join.
