Yes, I Did Start a New Quilt

Labor Day the NinePatch-Along 7.0 starts. This is an online long-arm quilting class taught by Natalia Bonner. The class is free, but I did need to buy the rulers and patterns. Although she does have a panel you can buy, I’m making mine. Black is a questionable choice for the background, but I’m working from my stash. I plan to use Glide in the color Storm so I can see to pick it out if necessary. I considered Cool Grey 7 as well. Of course, I’m not past going for something wild like a neon green. Nothing like seeing ALL my stitches. The finished quilt will be 50 x 60.

There are 3 more rulers/tools that I need and I just got notice that they are out for delivery. The took a 3 day weekend in Indianapolis before arriving in Jackson three days ago.

Modern Building Block #1 – Bound!

I’ve been on a roll and didn’t let this quilt remain unbound very long. It’s hard to see, but I did a flange binding. Not so much for the ‘pop of color’, but for the ease of stitching it down! This quilt was made for 2 purposes. #1 it is the first block in the 2014 Moda Modern Block quilt and I wanted to make sure I understood the cutting instructions (spoiler, I managed to botch it twice before I did flip and fold flying geese) and 2 I wanted to practice ruler and free motion quilting. As it turns out all of this is ruler work.

The circles were created with the HQ Swiss Cheese and Big HQ Swiss Cheese rulers. The piano keys and grid were created with the Piece N Quilt 4-N-1. The wavy concentric lines in the star points was created with the In Cahoots Wave 13 tool and the ‘diamond’ shapes in the setting triangles were made with Angel Walters “Dot”. I do not remember what I used to create the quilting in the center of the quilt.

I love the crinkle after washing. Looks like I could have used more quilting in the border — maybe beadboard? And it appears I forgot to stitch around the center square. Oh well.

Top started 7/4/26 and finished 8/19.
Quilting stared 8/20/26 and finished 8/21/26 with binding applied 8/24/26
Glide 40 wt in Zeffer on the top and Mercury in the bobbin.
Washed measurements 45 1/2″ x 45 1/2″
Stitch Count 43,695

Wonky Trees is Quilted

It’s a small quilt, but it still took me 2 sessions to get it quilted. I started with a little ruler work to make the ‘garlands’ on the trees, but I couldn’t remember how to mask the trees. Since it was late I decided to regroup in the morning.

I read the book, and watched 2 different videos on YouTube. I eventually figured it out — for the 1st 3 trees. When I advanced the quilt, I had to rewatch the video again. The last 3 trees I didn’t have to watch the video, but I did struggle with doing the steps in the right order, but I got it done. I think if I had to do it over again, I would outline the trees completely, but naturally I didn’t think of that until I was halfway though the quilt. Maybe next time. Now to get it bound.

Finish It Friday

On this Finish It Friday I have 2 quilts to share. First up is my Atomic Starburst, shown here hanging in my foyer on the new hanging rod.

This is one of three quilts I made with the FQ Bundle of Radiance + 10 ‘solids’. I’ve finished Shimmer, and still need to quilt Bauble ‘n Beads.

In each of the diamonds I placed a motif from a Double Wedding Ring Melon, then morphed it to fit the diamond. I did ruler work in the sashings and the starburst blocks.

My other finish this Friday is my 2019-2020 Quiltville Mystery quilt, Frolic.

I enlarged it and changed up the borders. It measured 118″ x 118″ before I quilted and washed it. Here it is hanging on my 12-foot quilting frame. I opted to do an all over Edge-to-Edge design called Fresco Feathers.

I only have 8-foot ceilings, ~~so I don’t~~ wait a minute, I have vaulted ceilings in my den, I might be able to get a straight on picture — if I had something wide enough to hang it on. I’ll have to think on that for another time. Here it is on my driveway before binding.

I bought a wide backing, but it wasn’t wide enough, so I added in a strip with ‘extra’ blocks. In reality I made those specifically for the backing.

August 1st – A Beautiful Day

Today was a beautiful day.It was about 79 degrees this morning with a light breeze. I had gone out to get gas and didn’t want to stay in.

The grass had been cut yesterday and the ground relatively dry, so I pulled out my picnic quilt and sat outside for about 45 minutes.

Then it was back to quilting.

I finished the quilting on Cascade.

It’s not bound yet as I’m waiting on the binding fabric. I have to admit I LOVE how the quilting came out. I started with half an idea – simple straight lines the length of the “sashing” and “something curvy” in the diamonds. Instead I started with continuous curves in the diamonds, then had to figure out the “sashing”. I order the BIG HQ Swiss Cheese Ruler off of Amazon, but when it arrived I decided it was not the right size, so I found the original HQ Swiss Cheese Ruler locally and bought it Friday afternoon. After doodling with it, continuous circles is what I came up with for the ‘”sashing”. But I didn’t think there was enough quilting in the diamonds.

I queries Facebook and received several suggestions. That prompted the circle in the middle of the diamonds and because I’m too lazy to tie off 70 circles, I ran a straight line of quilting up the middle of each diamond to reach the circle. I can’t wait to get this bound and washed to see the final results.
