Stash Report

I spent last week working on the stained glass quilt, but didn’t quite finish it, choosing to go thrifting instead on Saturday.  Perhaps this week I’ll get the top finished and get to count the fabric.  No yardage came home with me – only shirts – and what we are now thinking is a table for a 301.  I still need to do a bit of research to find out for certain.

Thrifting Finds

Since this is Judy’s Quiltathon weekend,  I should have sewn all day.  After all my young friend is here and we want to finish up her quilt this weekend.

I’ve been collecting 100% cotton shirts to repurpose, but it’s been slow going since I’m not willing to spend $3.95 and up for a shirt.  But it occured to me that frequently big church and fundraiser sales sometime have by the bag pricing.

Since I knew of two such sales, I scoured Craigslist and came up with 10 possible sales.  This morning before it was light, I was out the door to the first sale.

The pile of shirts in the back left corner was my first purchase.  $1 a bag — and I found 7 shirts.  I left with my wallet intact at the next two stops, but was tempted at the 4th.

There I found this machine in a hide-a-way cabinet for $25.

I don’t really need another machine that doesn’t zigzag, nor do I have space for a machine in a cabinet.  So I left empty-handed.

Then I picked up my young quilting friend and we hit the rest of the stops on my list.  I think we spent a total of $12 or $13 for everything you see pictured — 8 cotton shirts, 2 sets of new cotton pajamas, a home-made long cotton skirt, a pair of suspenders, large gift bag, paper bag book, bird necklace, 3D puzzle, game, cello print and the table everything is sitting on.

Some sort of sewing machine fits in that table.  There is a serial number on both the table and insert which is 7″ x 19 1/2″.  A screw is missing from one of the legs.  I don’t know what is supposed to fit in this table, nor do I have anything which will, but for $2.00 could I go wrong?

As for the quilting we were suppose to do?

I’m not sure what happened.  But I need to work on my machine before we do any more quilting.

Quilts From My Past – Parakeets for Christmas

One of my early quilting classes was a Block of the Month at Hancock Fabrics.  This was not it.  This was the previous year’s quilt and I bought the blocks on clearance.  I have no idea how the quilt was to be originally set, so the blocks sat waiting for inspiration to strike.

I first found the stripe fabric, then the border fabric and finally the bright green.  My notes indicate I started the quilt in March 2005 and finished it November 28, 2005 – obviously before my UFOs needed to age a year or more.

The quilt measures 70″ x 90″ and is quilted on my sewing machine.  The batting is probably Warm and Natural. The backing (which I don’t have a picture of is a mish-mash of the left over fabric.  I gave it to my oldest niece for Christmas when she was about 12.

I scanned the fabric to grab a bird. The label was created in my word processing program and then printed on “dark t-shirt” transfer material which I fused to a piece of the sashing fabric.

October Quiltathon – Day 1

Working full-time puts a cramp in my quilting time – especially if I’m easily distracted as I am on this quilt.  Last night while watching Quilt Cam, I cut and pieced the sashing running the width of the quilt, pieced the corner stones and trimmed the rest of the blocks.  Once Quilt Cam was over,  I walked out of my sewing room and found a book to read.

So, today, since it’s Day 1 of the October Quiltathon that Judy is hosting, I sat down after work and started with the intention of getting the quilt top finished — or at least two rows put together.

Instead, I got two blocks out-of-order – and I had them pinned with # pins! So, when DH suggested we make a run to the hardware store, I shut the machines down and grabbed my purse.

I guess now I will have some quality time with my seam ripper and try again tomorrow night.

Update:

After ripping out the wrong seams, sewing them together wrong again (but differently) and ripping out again. I finally got that last column put together.  So, I attempted the long sashing.  I think it’s right.

Dragging My Feet

There really isn’t any reason I couldn’t have more of this quilt top done — other than I’m dragging my feet.  I’m not looking forward to putting in the sashing across the width of the quilt.  I don’t have the border corners made either.

Check back tomorrow to see how much progress I make.

Progress

It didn’t take long at all to make visible progress last night.  Will work on this again tonight.

What’s On My Design Wall

This past weekend my young quilting friend was over and she used my main machine to start the quilting on her quilt.  My Genie either doesn’t have  a walking foot, or I don’t know where it is.  Anyway, I ended up sewing on the Genie and pulled out my stained glass quilt to work on.

I have completed one block, but the rest are paired and ready to go.  There are only 12 blocks total, so I hope to get the top completed this week.

Be sure to check out what others have on their design walls by following the links over at Patchwork Times.

Stash Report

Nothing in or out on my stash report this week.  I prepared the backing for a quilt, but since I haven’t quilted it yet, (and therefore could change my mind) I’m not going to count it.  And I didn’t work much on my Irish Chain quilt, so I still am not counting that fabric.  I just didn’t spend much time in my sewing room this week. On the other hand, the bedrooms are cleaner than they’ve been in a long time…

Quilts From My Past – Signature Swap

The summer of 2006 members of the kayewoods-quilting-friends Yahoo! group did a signature block swap.  48 people participated and we each received a block signed by Kaye Wood (hers is in the middle).

I put the center of the quilt together, but didn’t quite know where to go from there.  My husband pushed me to work out side of my normal traditional box and finish the quilt in a non-traditional manner.

The piece measures 43″ x 54″ and hangs in my hallway.  I finished the piece 1/5/07.

I’ve entered it in this weekend contest “Group Exchange Quilts” at the Quilting Gallery.  Do hop over and check out the other group exchange quilts.

What’s On My Design Wall

Today the design wall is my fabric storage shelves.  The quilt no longer fits on the design wall.  I have 5 more rows to assemble then it will be time to decide about the border.

Make sure to hop over to Patchwork Times to check out other design walls.
