Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Here’s My Excuse

Was is just yesterday when I said I was off to sandwich the Crossword Puzzle quilt and it would be late this month before I worked on my UFO?

Here’s my excuse:

Yesterday after work I worked on sandwiching the Crossword Puzzle quilt.  My method involves my large ironing board (abt 24 x 60) and basting spray.  Typically I don’t have any problems.  However, for the first time I’m using a homespun for the backing and it is not as stable as I’m used to.

I got the backing on just fine.  Then I flipped the backing and batting over and spray basted the quilt top.  Took great pains to keep the batting “square” with the plaid.  Everything looked good.  So my next step was to mark the quilt.

Since the plan was to mark the stitching lines using painters tape (love that stuff) across the diagonal, I turned the quilt — but in doing so, I saw the backing was scrunched.  So, I flipped the quilt over backing up just to see how bad it was.

It’s too bad.  I’ve got to get those wrinkles out.  But how?  That’s when I walked away from the “current” project and back to my  “UFO Steps” project.  Except, by this time my husband was napping on the couch and I didn’t want to turn on enough light to see in case it woke him.

As a result, the only “legal” project for me to work on until either the seam on the Green & Cream quilt is finished or I finish quilting the Crossword Puzzle quilt is one of my August UFOs.

This is a project my mom started before we knew she was sick the first time.  My plan when I packed up this UFO (and the 3 others she left) was to finish them.  This baby quilt will go to one of her next great-grandbabies.

Working on the quilt last night I discovered that mom’s 1/4″ seam was off — by at least an 1/8″.  I could take all the stitching out and re-stitch it, but then it would be my quilt, not one from my mom and me.  So, I made an executive decision — instead of the 4-patches finishing at 3″, they would finish at 2 1/2″.  I just wish I made that decision before I made the HST and cut the rest of the quilt out.  This afternoon I trimmed everything to finish at 2 1/2″ and pieced the center together.

The center of the quilt 4 1/2″ smaller than it was originally designed, and the borders need to be narrower as well. I think I’m going to put on a 3 to 4″ border of the orange floral fabric and then possibly bind it in the green.  Time will tell.

Now to decide what to do about the Crossword Puzzle quilt — attempt to fix the backing or quilt it on the longarm.  Either way requires thinking.

August’s UFO

Judy, over at Patchwork Times has picked the UFO # for August.  It is # 7.

#7 on my “complete the top” list is a peach and green Chain of Stars — the same pattern as  July’s UFO finish.

After I wrote the pattern I asked my mom to test it for me.  This is as far as she got.  My intention is to finish it and then give it to the next great grandbaby – if it’s appropriate.

On the ‘to-be-quilted’ list is Red, White & Blue Baby 2.  It’s not listed as #1 on my list, but I finished #7 off this list back in March.

Stay tuned to see which one — if either I work on this month.  In the meantime I’m off to finish sandwiching the Crossword Puzzle quilt, but you can check out what others finished off their UFO list over at Judy’s.

Procrastination Challenge – Report 1

After making the extra buttonhole on my husband’s shirt, I pulled out the Green & Cream quilt to see what I need to do on it.  The quilt will be 20 blocks 4 x 5 and I have 12 blocks quilted.  This section just needs the seam sewn down on the back.  My goal is to have the seam done and have the quilting started (maybe finished?) on the Crossword Puzzle quilt by this time next week.

We’ll see how well this works.

The Lesson Didn’t Take…

Or I learned the wrong lesson.

After pushing to complete 10 quilts in 3 months, then sitting idle for nearly a month recovering, you would think I could focus on just one quilt.  The one that needs to get done.   The one that is overdue. But no, there are 34 quilts on my WIP/UFO list and another 33 quilt tops waiting to be quilted (including the overdue quilt top).

While I wasn’t quilting, I was making a list of 14 quilts which I want to see progress on (some to finish, as in quilt, bind and label; others just get the top done.)  And I’m sure it will get longer before the end of the year.  There are five more months left in Judy’s UFO Challenge and 7 quilts on my challenge list, which are not already on this list.

This combined with the heat & a clean sewing room, I can’ t figure out what I want to work on next.

So, I took a page from Shelly’s Procrastination Challenge.

On slips of paper I put a step for each quilt I want to see done by the end of the year.  The slip has the quilt name and one step — for instance the QIAD Christmas Row Quilt has multiple steps – make cornerstones; sash blocks; assemble center of quilt & add borders.  I just want the top done by the end of the year, so quilt; label & bind are not included.  Some quilts say things like “quilt one ring” x 15.  If a quilt has multiple steps, only the next step goes into the bag — and I also have a slip called “press scraps for 15 minutes and cut up”.

This is the step I picked tonight:

It’s almost enough to get me in gear and sandwich the Crossword Puzzle quilt.  I’ve given up on the True Friends quilt — or more acurately I’m not sure how I want to assemble it.  So, it will stay on the design wall until I either need the wall or figure out what I’m going to do with it.

My husband’s new shirt needs another buttonhole.  I think I’ll go make it.  Then decide if it’s cooled off enough to manhandle the Crossword Puzzle quilt for sandwiching or if working on a row of the Green & Cream quilt is more appealing.

What’s on my Design Wall

I’ve completed the blocks for True Friends.  It is the second UFO for July.  All I needed to do to get to this point was sew one seam on each block.  Since Judy is not posting the UFO Challenge # until Wednesday I thought I’d see if I could get this one knocked off my list.

What can I say – I’m still debating the quilting plan for the Crossword Puzzle quilt — at least that’s what I’m telling myself.  I think I’m really just delaying sandwiching the quilt.  It’s big about 83 x 90, so I’m going to have to shift around tables to get enough support for the quilt.

July’s Finishes

If you had told me on July 1st I’d have not one, but two finishes (ok, they are small), I would have told you there’s no way.

But earlier today I finished stitching not only the binding down, but also the label.  Who knows, I might even get the quilts washed before midnight.

First up is Fireworks Over John Deere.  What else can I call this?  The pattern is called Chain of Stars.  I wrote it as the 2008 retreat mystery quilt.    I found in my stash a couple of John Deere pillow panels, so naturally they went on the back of the quilt.  This quilt top has been hanging around since the retreat.  This is the July UFO pick.

The second quilt I finished  this month is called Gift Wrapped.  It too is a mystery quilt — for this fall 2011 retreat — so you only get to see the back of the quilt until the retreat in September.

So what was I supposed to be working on this month?  The Crossword Puzzle quilt.  Progress was made.  1 – I got the missing “L” inserted into the quilt; 2 – removed the temporary hanging sleeve and ribbon stabilizer; 3 – decided the quilt is “square enough” to quilt and then square up; 4 – returned the Go! I borrowed to cut the blocks out;  5 – pieced the quilt backing and 6 – tentatively settled on a quilting design.

Let’s hope August is a productive.

Stash Report

This week the report is mixed.

One of the quilts I signed up to finish as part of  both Judy’s UFO Challenge and Heritage Fine Fabric’s UFQ program is my QIAD Christmas Row Quilt.  I participated in a block swap in November 2008 and my goal is to have the top done by the end of the year.  I think it was June’s UFO.

Anyway, I’ve finally come up with quilt top design which handles the variances in the block sizes (they were all supposed to finish at 12″).

The red fabric I’ve picked is called Holiday Luminosity.  I’m not sure what the green fabric is call and believe it or not, the white fabric is included in the picture.

So, that’s what came in. Who knows when I’ll start to use it.  It’s got to be washed first.

But fabric used.  I get to count the backing & binding for Fireworks Over John Deere and the backing for the Crossword Puzzle quilt.  I finally got the second seam done.  I’m going to bind and label the baby quilt and the mystery quilt, then make a decision about the quilting on the Crossword Puzzle quilt.

Fabric Added Last Week: 9.365 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 99.384 yards

Fabric Used Last Week: 10.333 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 126.195 yards

Net Used for 2011: 26.811 yards

All is good as I’ve used more than I bought and I hope to use what I bought before the end of the year.  Although Judy is frantically packing and not sewing, check out the link at Patchwork Times to see how others are doing with their stash.

No, It’s Not a New Quilt

It’s the backing for “Fireworks Over John Deere”.

The Scrap Bucket

Part of the cleaning of my sewing room resulted in all of the scraps (and larger pieces)  from the last 6 or 7 months getting corralled into one place.  To be fair, most of the popcorn tin contains “crumbs”  too small for me but I know there are quilters who love crumbs.

So, yesterday after sewing ONE of the two seams needed for the backing of the Crossword Puzzle quilt, I started working on this pile. I filled a 2 gal bag with crumbs from the tin (had to start there so I’d have a place for the crumbs I’ll generate working the scraps).  There was also a good bit a fabric which was too big to be called scrap which I’ve put away. So I’m actually down to just the plastic box which needs dealing with.

I put the lid on the box and set it over in the basket of thrift shirts which still need cutting up.

What can I say — I’ve got a pile of batting scraps which need to be dealt with — not to mention another seam on the backing for the Crossword Puzzle quilt (and all of the stuff I had spread out on the ironing board Sunday night.

What’s On My Design Wall

Today there’s a little bit of everything on my design wall/ironing board.  I’ve had a bit of a problem settling down and working on just one thing.

At the top is the Crossword Puzzle quilt, which has been fixed and now needs to be quilted.  I haven’t totally decided how I’m going to quilt it, but I should make the backing.  It’s the plaid that sticking out around the edges.  Yes, two long seams will need to be matched.  The fabric was pressed this weekend.

Another easy “finish” is Candy Sunflower Seeds.  This got set aside in May or June and it just needs the borders.  The top and border fabric surfaced while I was cleaning this weekend and it’s been pressed.  Now if I can only remember if I was planning on a narrow border before the brown outer border.  At least the stars ‘float’ so I don’t have to worry about them disappearing into the border.

The red is the mystery quilt pattern I was testing a couple of weeks ago.  I have the straight line quilting done and now need to add the holly leaves.  7 sets of 3 to go.

That yellow, green  and fireworks is Fireworks Over John Deere.  It is also this month’s UFO to be quilted.  It measures 45 1/2″ wide and of course my backing fabric is only a tad over 40″ wide.  So, I’ve got to make a backing.

I’ve got four of John Deere pillow panels and I’m considering using one or moe along with the fireworks fabric to make the backing.  So, naturally, after I got the fabric and panels pressed I just left it on my ironing board while I make a decision.

Finally, believe it or not, I did a bit of hand quilting.  Finished up 2 more hearts and moved the hoop for the first time in several months.  I’m not sure when the last time I worked on the quilt.

To see if others are bouncing all over the place, check out the links at Patchwork Times.  In the meantime, I’ll see if I can focus on just one or two projects.
