Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Stash Report

I have not fallen off the planet, although the amount of posting I’ve done recently may lead you to believe that. Nor have I been caught up with non-stop quilting.  It’s been yard work.  We’ve been trying to clear the jungle that is in our backyard. It’s also been reading.  I’ve re-reading all of the main books to the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon in preparation to reading Written In My Own Hearts Blood.  Looking at my new position on the waitlist at the library it looks like it will be about 4 weeks before I get my hands on a copy of the book in any form.

During my absence, I did get the binding on the placemats and coasters. I also moved the bag of shirts from the living room into my sewing room. Finally last night I pulled the shirts I need for the June and July Alphabet BOM.

There were a few quick trips to quilt shops but I only brought home two black batts which were on sale at 50% off for two quilts which need to be completed by the end of the year.  I go back to work tomorrow, the  yard work has taken on a new urgency (we’ve hired a truck to haul off the trimmings Saturday morning) and I still haven’t cleared off my cutting table, so there’s no telling when you’ll hear from me again.

Stash Report

I have been busy since the last stash report two weeks ago.  There was no report last week as I was at a quilt retreat and was reminded of a quilt with a hard deadline that I had completely forgotten about.  So, between buying fabrics for the forgotten quilt and general shop hopping that comes when traveling to a quilt retreat the stash has grown.

On the other hand, I finished that huge backing from my stash, I finished the JTAW top and the completely forgotten quilt (Sorry, no pictures until November).  This means my numbers actually came out ahead of the game, which really surprised me.

Stash Report

I went to the thrift shop last Sunday.  Just one. But still 13 shirts or 19 1/2 yards came home with me for $2.75.  No pictures. Tied the bags shut, tossed them down the stairs to wash and haven’t gotten that far. I also picked up fabric for the borders for Eeyore

On the other hand, I finally finished the Eeyore quilt to, so I get to count some yardage used. I’m refraining from counting the backing yardage just to bump my numbers up since the backing is at least 4 1/2 hours away from becoming a backing.  This happens when you increase the length of the initial strip of a jelly roll race quilt.  But look out next week.

Not only will I be able to count the backing, with any luck I should be able to count Jared Takes A Wife, and part of Candy Sunflower Seeds & Orca Bay (these were started when I was counting as I pieced instead of upon the completed top).

So, the numbers:

Fabric added this week: 19.75 yards
Fabric added to date: 122.439 yards – includes 61.25 yards recycled fabric

Fabric used this week: 5.25 yards
Fabric used to date: 57.98 yards

Net used to date: -64.459 yards

If I hadn’t found the 25¢ shirts last week, the report wouldn’t be too bad.  But there’s hope – if I stay out of the thrift shops.  I have great plans on finishing several quilt tops and two quilts by the end of the month.

Whoo Hoo! It’s not bound, but it’s quilted.

At the retreat Friday and Saturday I finished the quilting on my Green, Brown and Gold Ladder to the Stars — AKA Deadline II.  I’ve been calling it Deadline II because back in October I made it to both test my Ladder to the Stars pattern and to test the quilting I wanted to do on the original Red, White & Blue Ladder to the Stars which was published today in The Quilt Pattern Magazine — an on-line quilting magazine.  It’s my first published quilt pattern!

I had about an hour after finishing up LTTS-2 to work on Jared Takes a Wife and I’m ready to assemble blocks.

Since the quilt is quilted, I get to count the backing fabric.  It’s off set by the bit of fabric I received at the retreat to make a Flip Flop block — I got the flip flops cut out, but that’s as far as I got since I was focused.  I wish I had thought to take a picture of the blocks the other ladies made. They were awesome.

Anyway here’s the weekly stats:

Fabric added this week: 0.5 yards
Fabric added to date: 77.244 yards

Fabric used this week: 3.348 yards
Fabric used to date: 52.73 yards

Net used to date: -24.514 yards

Stash Report

Yesterday morning I saw a notice that the shop where I rent time on the long arm was having a sale on packaged batting. Since I used up the last of my Warm and Natural and this was less expensive than W&N on sale, I bought one to use on the Scrappy Trips quilt which I hope to get quilted in June.

The Tossed Cats and Magic Black came from another LQS. They were having a moving and bolt sale – both pieces were on sale.  The Cats will go with the paw prints I bought a few weeks back which in turn go with the panel I bought several years ago. I really need to start thinking about that quilt and gathering the rest of the fabric I’m going to need.  I hope I can pull it from my stash.

The Magic Black will be used in the Eeyore quilt.  I need to redo the fingerboard and tail piece on the bass without glitter.

So, what have I gotten done so far this weekend?  The red, black and white rail fence quilt is bound and headed to the wash. I ripped out about 6″ of the quilting on the brown quilt, then a friend offered to work on it while she watches TV — works for me.  Then last night after I finished the binding, I wasn’t quite ready to work on Eeyore, so I stitched some star points on JTAW while I finished listening to The Violin of Auschwitz by Maria Angels Anglada.

So, this week’s tally is:

Fabric added this week: 2.865 yards
Fabric added to date: 76.744 yards

Fabric used this week: 0 yards
Fabric used to date: 49.382 yards

Net used to date: -27.362 yards

shirts

If I had only stayed away from the thrift shops and garage sales….

Saturday morning, I pulled a list of garage sales that I thought might be good prospects for shirts. My plan was to call and see if there was an open machine where I rent time on the long arm and then go to the sales afterwards. But given it took nearly 15 minutes to find a parking place last weekend, I started toward the shop before I knew there was a machine available.

There wouldn’t be one until 1 PM, so that gave me plenty of time to hit the sales. The first stop — clothes $5 a bag didn’t have any cotton shirts, other than t-shirts. I headed to the second stop, a fund raiser for a youth group. There were 6 shirts, but at $2 a shirt – admittedly a better price than the big thrift shops, I only bought 2.

I thought I had been told there was a quilt shop out that direction, so I searched on my recently updated Garmin and found one supposedly 6 miles away. It was closer to 11 miles away and when I got there I realized that was the shop which closed several years ago. Oh well. On to the next destination.

Before I could get there I spotted a guy waving a sign “Blowout sale. Thrift Store”. Naturally I turned in.  Shirts were $1 a piece normally, and for the sale buy 3 get one free.  I picked up 4, including a reversible shirt — blue on one side and green on the other.

Back into the car, spotted another shop, but no shirts and tried again to get to my next stop only to find another thrift shop with a sale going on. Picked up 2 more shirts at $1 each.

Finally got to the quilt shop I was headed for and they were having a “garage sale”.  They are moving at the end of the month. Saw a lot of cute stuff, but given I knew I was going to be buying a punch card for long arm time, I managed to not spend any money.

Pulled in at 1 to the rental place.  Two hours later, I had quilted Sydney’s latest quilt and purchased 3 cones of thread — all at 40% off.

Swung by to pick up “lunch” — it was pushing 4 when I got home, ate then took a nap.

8 shirts – 12 yards. I don’t get to count the backing as that came out of Sydney’s stash, but I did make a pillowcase. I think I need to finish something of my own soon.

The plan was to use the green as the binding on the latest quilt – but I found something better in my stash — should have looked there first. The spider webs will go into that Halloween quilt I’m going to make some day.  The good news is it was all 40% off, but it is 2 yards added to the stash.

On the other hand, I get to count the backing and binding on my Scrappy Irish Chain that I just quilted.
