Orca Bay is Finished!

  • Top Thread: Omni thread by Superior Thread Color # 3172 – Verbena

  • Quilting design: AMPANTO03 Curly Q by Aimee Mahan
  • Quilting time: approximately 3 hours
  • Size before washing: 75″ x 84″
  • Size after washing: 70 1/2″ x 79 1/2″
  • Started: As part of the 2011 Mystery 11/18/2011

What’s On My Design Wall

Last week there were big finishes.  First was Eye Fooler — at about 4:00 AM Saturday morning. Nothing like finishing with only hours to spare.

The second finish is Orca Bay.  The binding is stitched down and now I need to get it washed, photographed and shipped off.

So what’s next?  Catching up on laundry and deep cleaning the kitchen. Along the way,  I need to put up the extra fabric from the quilts – I’ve already taken care of the backing and batting, but I need to put up the brights from Eye Fooler. After I get that done, I’ll start cutting the recycled shirts for my nephews’ quilts. Now if I can find the note card which tells me how many squares I need to cut….

Stash Report

A big finish and a near finish finally has my numbers going in the correct direction.

This past week I finished Eye Fooler so I can count all of the fabric — top, backing, binding and the pillowcase.  That’s 16 3/4 yards!  Additionally, I quilted Orca Bay so I am counting the backing this week as well.

The only thing I bought last week is flower head pins — ran out about midnight pinning the quilts to the zippers!  Good thing Walmart is open 24 hours around here (or not — I think I spent $25 and I only wanted a $5 box of pins!)

Six and a Half Hours of Quilting

orcabutterMy cats are new to Quilting Quality Control.  Apparently they don’t inspect tops, but wait until the quilting is done.  This is Butterscotch on my version of Bonnie Hunter’s Orca Bay. I gave the future owner the choice of orange or black binding and she has chosen orange.  I’ll do it next week.

Gracie inspected my version of Eye Fooler. This has to be finished and gift wrapped by Noon Saturday. It will get a gold binding with a black flange following Susie’s Magic Binding.

After the quilts are finished I’ll post a longer post with more information about each quilt.

The Garden Report

As near as I can tell, everything is still looking good.  A couple of my original black-eyed peas finally came up and this morning there was a new sprout from last week’s planting. Since these pics were taken (about 8 AM this morning) another pea has sprouted.  It’s hard to believe it’s only been 3 weeks since I planted.

What’s On My Design Wall

No, it’s not a quilt, but it is fabric that I bought last week.

My husband stopped at a garage sale on his way home from the dentist a couple of weeks ago.  He bought two swivel bar stools which needed a bit of TLC. (I forgot to take a picture until we started working on them.)  This is one was the ‘good’ one.

With a little bit of elbow grease and $6 of vinyl we now have two good-looking bar stools.  Now to figure out where to put them.  He’s decided not to use them where he original intended.

Just a few more seams left on Eye Fooler.  I’ve got to stay home and stop running around.  It interferes with my quilting.gradquilt-dw0511

Stash Report

Apparently I can’t garden and quilt at the same time.  I STILL don’t have the graduation quilt done, so last week I pinned Orca Bay to the zippers, but then couldn’t get away from work for my long-arm date.  So, I have a marathon date with the long arm this week to quilt both quilts.

Disappearing Nine-Patch Fabric

The only reason we went into Jo-Ann’s today was to buy some fabric to cover a couple of bar stools. But, since we were standing in line anyway… and the fabric was 40% off….

I plan to make three different Disappearing Nine-Patch quilts.  The orange is part of the fabric I bought for the backing of Orca Bay, so it’s already been counted. It goes into the quilt for my youngest nephew.  The green — it’s a sagey/olive goes to the next youngest nephew and the red goes to the oldest nephew.  The rest of the fabrics will come from my recycled shirts.  I figure if I have them out might as well cut for all three.

Oh, and yes, we did find what we needed for the bar stools.  I’ll do before and after photos when I get that far.
