Last week I let my fingers do a bit of shopping — but no new fabric.  The good news is I get to count the fabric for the baby quilt out as I finished it yesterday! Pictures later today.

Fabric added this week: 0 yards
Fabric added to date: 59.879 yards

Fabric used this week: 3.725 yards
Fabric used to date: 42.712 yards

Net used to date: -17.167 yards

The third border is complete and I’ve started the 4th one, but that means I still can’t count any fabric out.  But there is two yards of fabric to count in.

Yesterday I stopped in at The Country Store Quilt Shop, 14426 Burr Oak Road Carthage, MO 64836. Phone: (417) 827-6626.  It’s outside of town southwest of the intersection of I-44 and US 71.

When I walked in I was greeted by the shop owner who asked me if I was looking for anything particular (I wasn’t) then she asked me if I knew the pricing policy.

$7 a yard for 45-inch quilting cotton

I made the comment that at that price I could actually afford some fabric the she explained her pricing philosophy. Essentially, she is concerned that we will lose a whole generation of quilters who won’t start quilting with prices so high and those of us who do quilt are being hard pressed to buy fabric. She’s decided to take a stand against the high prices and believes she’ll make it work by volume of sales. She started her experiment a month ago, so I hope she makes it work.

So what did I buy?  7 – 1/4 yard cuts of “white” neutrals, plus a 1/4  yard cut of purple.  I noticed while cutting the neutrals for my hexagon quilt most of them had a cream or beige background.

Oh, my.  Yesterday my friends and I went to a new to us quilt shop – By the Yard in Rayville, Missouri. This is their 7th anniversary and they were having an anniversary sale. I found them because I was looking for a near by shop which carries the American Made Brand fabric.  It’s a great shop and was worth the drive (about an hour north of me). This is what I managed to limit myself to.

The black and bright was an impulse buy – Loralie Designs to go with her Cool Cats that I bought several years ago. The large pink and brown reproduction print on the right will be the backing for the pink and brown quilt top I made several years ago. It was on the clearance rack at a fantastic price and then if you bought 5 yards you got one free. Seven yards came home with me.  I’m going to try to match the seam.

In the back is what brought me to the store.  AMB fabric in Light Kahki, Aqua, Brown and Light Yellow. I’m going to use this to test a new quilt pattern. The print behind it will be my backing — it is not an AMB fabric.

There were several other pieces of fabric I would have loved to brought home, but I knew if I did, it would just sit in on my shelf for a while.

Since I knew my numbers were going to jump up, I finally finished de-boning the shirts I bought last month. Those numbers are now in my total as well.

Fabric added this week: 17.75 yards + 10.25 recycled
Fabric added to date: 57.879 yards

Fabric used this week: 0 yards
Fabric used to date: 38.987 yards

Net used to date: -18.982 yards

Nothing like having more fabric now than when I started the year.

Stash Report

Most of the week was spent in contemplation of how to hem a prom dress. Once that was done I pieced a bit on Jared Takes A Wife, but since it is not complete, no fabric is counted — in or out.

Stash Report

My stash is still smaller than it was at the beginning of the year, but it won’t be if I have very many weeks like this past week. I’m still working on the baby quilt – and broke down and bought another yard of fabric. Not only did I cut the first border 1/2″ narrower that I was aiming for, I discovered that I’ve stitched the music off center and now need to piece the border — even with cornerstones. It will be fine, just frustrating.

Then there are the gorgeous batiks I ordered late Tuesday night which arrived Friday in the mail.

The inbound numbers are up and I only get to count the 1/4 yard that I used to make the tool pouch. Perhaps this week I’ll get something large finished.

Fabric added this week: 10.25 yards

Fabric used this week: 0.25 yards
Fabric used to date: 38.737 yards

Net used to date: 15.758 yards (and I still haven’t counted those shirt yet.)

Yesterday for International Quilting Day I did a bit of shopping and a bit of quilting.

It’s been a while since I have bought all of the fabric for a quilt at once, let alone paid full retail price – and I was overwhelmed by the cost. I thought I could expect to pay about $10.50 a yard and hoped to buy the fabric at the shop which was having a 20% off sale.  Unfortunately they didn’t have what I was looking for.  So it was on to the next shop.

Wonderful selection of fabrics, but a $1 a yard more than the first shop and nothing was on sale. I found what I wanted to use and then did the math. I was ready to walk out and regroup but my friend with me talked me into getting the gold on the theory that the black and beige would be easier to find. I did some more math and decided to get both the gold and the black, but only enough for the top. (I was planning on a black and gold checkerboard pieced backing).

So, it was on to the 3rd shop.  I’ll admit it. I looked at price, then I looked at the fabric. The dotted fabric is Dinky Dots by Loralie Harris and it has a copyright date of 2007 with a price to match. More importantly I love it. It’s not what I thought I wanted, but it’s giving the quilt  punch.

As for the backing? I decided I’d worry about it another day.

After a much needed nap, I started the quilt. It’s all cut, but about midnight I got stuck figuring out the pressing plan so the blocks will nest together and decided to call it quits. So there’s been lots of cutting this week (this quilt and Jared Takes A Wife), even some piecing, but nothing is finished and the numbers have gone up. But they’ll be going down before the end of the month.

I almost forgot. The week started off with a trip to the Goodwill Outlet where I picked up these:

shirts

As soon as I de-bone them, I’ll adjust today’s numbers.

Fabric added this week: 4.5 yards
Fabric added to date: 12.729 yards

Fabric used this week: 0 yards
Fabric used to date: 38.487 yards

Net used to date: 25.758 yards

Stash Report

This past week I finished a quilt from stash and made two pillowcases from purchased fabric with some left over.  Still I’m very happy with my numbers.

Fabric added this week: 3.25 yards
Fabric added to date: 8.229 yards

Fabric used this week: 5.91 yards
Fabric used to date: 38.487 yards

Net used to date: 30.258 yards

The question now is how will my numbers look after a girls day out to a couple of quilt shops next Saturday…

Stash Report

I spent hours sewing Friday night and all day Saturday – but yet I have no output to report. I worked on Orca Bay and there are a “billion pieces” in that quilt and I’m still piecing. As the retreat was for our “PhD” we receive a FQ “diploma”.  I’ll dig it out of my stuff in the next day or so.

Fabric added to date: 4.979 yards

Stash Report

Here it is the end of February and I’m still in the black yardage wise — that is I’ve used more than I’ve acquired. Who knows how long that will remain the case.

This week Deadline III was finally quilted and bound.  I can’t tell from my notes if I counted the binding when I made it or not. Since I think I made the binding before the first of the year I’m not going to count it.  On the other hand I know the backing has not been counted, so that is in today’s numbers.
