What’s On My Design Wall

ob0301

Friday night and all day Saturday, I attended a local PhD retreat — Projects Half Done — sponsored by a local quilt shop. In keeping with the theme of Projects Half Done and to work on this year’s UFO list, I took my Orca Bay to work on.

No, I did not do all of that this past weekend.  I just those purple string triangles that I have stacked up in a square. Yesterday I took stock of what I had done before packing the project away for another retreat.  I was afraid that I had more star blocks to make, but it turns out I have nearly 70 +/- QST extra units. Whew!

So, now I have completed all of the clues up through 6.  In clue # 7, I have 4 more black & white triangle units to make and I need to cut neutral triangles for the border. The box has not been put back on the shelf, so I may go ahead and cut the remaining pieces so it will be ready to go for the next retreat.

The shamrock is either a wall hanging or the first block of a new quilt – I haven’t decided yet. It was made as part of the fun and games at the retreat.

Next week, I hope to show progress on Eeyore, but we’ll see. I’ve started the border on the shawl….

Check out the links over at  Patchwork Times. I’m sure we’ll see some great inspiration.

Stash Report

I spent hours sewing Friday night and all day Saturday – but yet I have no output to report. I worked on Orca Bay and there are a “billion pieces” in that quilt and I’m still piecing. As the retreat was for our “PhD” we receive a FQ “diploma”.  I’ll dig it out of my stuff in the next day or so.

March’s Quilting Goals

Mar_Goals

March’s goals in many ways are a repeat of February’s goals.

  • Make “visible” progress on the Double Wedding Ring
  • Make progress on Eeyore
  • Make the “O” block for the Alphabet BOM
  • Make progress on Orca Bay
  • Bonus – make the backing for Scrappy Trips

I’ll work on the DWR this month in smaller increments.  I irritated my wrist last month with my marathon quilting session.

Same goal for Eeyore — get the applique done.

Orca Bay is this weekend’s retreat project.  I’m working on the red string blocks which I’m making in purple. I’ll probably put the project away after the retreat and save it for the next one since I didn’t work on Eeyore at all in February.

Now if I can keep the knitting going along, but not taking over, I might just get this list done.  Of  course having 3 more days in the month will make a difference too.

February Quilting Accomplishments

total Feb

Here’s my February recap:

  • Make “visible” progress on my Double Wedding Ring – DONE — well visible progress was made.  I still have two more rings to quilt
  • Finish Deadline  III – DONE
  • Make the “N” blocks for the Alphabet BOM. – DONE
  • Make progress on Eeyore – Didn’t touch
  • Bonus – Finish Scrappy Trips. – I need to make the backing and buy batting. – I did by batting, does that count?

I got distracted. There was the baby quilt from the Deadline III pattern; applique flowers started (what’s up with that?) and a bit of knitting.

There’s no picture of the knitting but night before last I got to the last row before the border and decided I need to make the shawl bigger, so I think I need to do 6 more repeats. But then I dropped a stitch and I’ve got to rip back to fix it — that’s what happened to my other twisty pin – it’s stuck in my knitting.

Anyway I hope to get back on track with quilting starting with a retreat I’m going to this evening and tomorrow. How much retreating I get done will depend on how much I get called from work. Fortunately I’m only 20 minutes away so I can do both.

This past week I finished both Deadline III and Baby Deadline III.  It will be some time before I can reveal the quilts.

The month started with 4 definite goals and a bonus goal. So far I’ve met two of those goals. There are only 5 days left in the month. I best get in gear. And somewhere along the way, I need to figure out what I’m going to take to the PhD (Project Half Done) retreat Friday and Saturday — that is if it still works out that I can go. It may come down to the wire before I know for certain.

Stash Report

Here it is the end of February and I’m still in the black yardage wise — that is I’ve used more than I’ve acquired. Who knows how long that will remain the case.

This week Deadline III was finally quilted and bound.  I can’t tell from my notes if I counted the binding when I made it or not. Since I think I made the binding before the first of the year I’m not going to count it.  On the other hand I know the backing has not been counted, so that is in today’s numbers.

On the Needles

knitting0220

This is the what — the 4th or 5th knitting post with very little quilting posts this week?  I promise I really am quilting — but it’s on a mystery quilt to be published this fall so I can’t show the quilt.

This is my Easy as Pie Shawl. Last night I think I ripped out the last 4 row repeat 4 times. I’m not sure why I kept dropping a stitch.  Perhaps it was because I was actually watching the TV instead of simply listening to it.

By my calculations I’m 4300 stitches into the body of the shawl which puts me right at 40% of the body as written.

Easy As Pie – Shawl

Well, I’m well under way to having a knitted project for the first time in years.  I’m using the pattern Easy As Pie by Marisa Hernandez, which I downloaded off of Ravelry. Actually, I downloaded several shawl patterns but settled on this one.

I started numerous times with my Admiral Jaggerspun and #3 bamboo needles, but the thread yarn kept hanging up on the needles and I’d lose my place in the pattern.  Determined to knit, I grabbed the first skein of yarn I found in the basement – well, actually there were two skeins — a light blue and this gray. I’m not sure what I was thinking.  If I had walked wound my way to the other side of the basement I could have had several choices in color of this Plymouth Encore DK yarn. BTW, the pattern calls for fingering weight yarn which I believe would fall somewhere between my Jaggerspun Lace and the Encore. Oh, well. I can’t remember what size needles I’m using — 5 or 6 I think.

Anyway, after 3 or 4 attempts, I finally got the first repeat knitted. Then somewhere I must have lost my place in the pattern and knitted when I should have purled.  I’m leaving it and calling it a design element.

I’m a tad over 1/3 of the body of the shawl as written. But since I can’t follow a pattern as written (it’s not just in quilting) I plan on adding additional rows — if I can figure out the repeat on the edging. But before I do that, I’ve got to frog at least 6 rows, maybe 8. I lost two stitches and it will make a difference.  Just need to find a good needle to run through the stitches to catch them.

But there is binding to do first.  I quilted Deadline III this morning.

The quilt is on the zippers and I’m ready to quilt it on Wednesday. In the meantime, I dug out the fabrics I’m planning on using on this month’s Alphabet BOM.  I also re-evaluated the yellow batik I have and decided it would work on the flowers. The yellow is just glued in place – I haven’t stitched it yet.
