Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Stash Report

Although I was in multiple quilt shops this past week, I only came home with a single spool of thread and multiple patterns.  I even managed to pass up the fabric at a moving sale of a local fabric and quilt designer! The only used fabric is the binding for the DWR.

Pattern Week

patterns-1

This week I’ve been buying patterns.

On the right is Terry Atkinson’s pattern All About Me. I first saw this quilt done up in University of Kansas fabrics and immediately thought it would be a great pattern for either my cat fabric or music fabric.  I bought my copy of the pattern at Stitch on Needlework in Lawrence, Kansas.

The middle pattern is Eye Fooler by Krisanne Watkins. I first saw this quilt on Subee Sews Quilts, but then forgot that’s where I saw it. So I searched ‘net and found a version of it at Rouge Quilter. where I found a mailing address. I could have saved myself a bit of time and ordered the pattern on-line, but by the time I found Quail Valley Quilts, I had already sent a check in. I’m planning on making this quilt in brights on a black background for my niece’s graduation.

The pattern on the left is Star-a-Day by  Karen Styles. I’m not even certain how I tripped over this pattern.  I picked my copy up at Quilting Bits and Pieces in Eudora, Kansas. The idea is to make one 3″ LeMoyne Star every day for a year – not repeating any star fabric. They are set together alternating with 3″ squares.  I’m not a handwork person and I am in the process of hand stitching the binding down on my DWR, there is the hexie project in my busy bag along with some red work, a few applique pieces and a bit of embroidery, so there is no reason for me to start a new hand project. But as you can see, there is the first little star waiting for the rest of the setting pieces….

The Binding Has Begun

dwrfrontbinding

Today I attached the binding to the DWR and started sewing it down.  Most of my bindings are stitched down on the machine. In fact 5 or 6 rings are stitched down by machine, but I’ve decided that I’m going to stitch this down by hand.  There are 30 rings – well edges of rings – on this quilt. My goal is to stitch at least one down each day. At this rate I’ll finish the binding by the end of the month.

August Recap / September Goal

AugRecap

I got more done in August than I realized.  The Alphabet BOM blocks for the summer are done.  R is for Rail Fence, S is for Spools and T is for Tile Puzzle. I made a pillowcase for “The Forgotten Quilt”; started a batik version of “August C”; cut out a quilt for Sydney to piece; quilted, bound and labeled Abbey Memories and finally finished the Eeyore quilt and made a matching pillowcase.

So, what’s on the agenda for September?

  • The “U” block for the BOM
  • Bind and label the DWR
  • Finish the blocks on the Batik August C
  • Quilt Scrappy Trips
  • Start Kalli’s graduation quilt – which may just mean pull fabrics.

Then again other than doing the BOM and DWR, I may pull completely different projects to work on.

What’s On My Design Wall

dwr

I really hoped that I would be able to show that the binding was attached to the DWR and I was stitching it down.  But instead of working on the DWR last night I spent the evening assembling a grill — and it’s not done either!

True, I could have bought the grill already assembled, but then I wouldn’t have been able to get it home. Needless to say, if I don’t get it into gear today, we won’t be grilling tonight either.

But back to the DWR.  Part of my hesitation on the binding was deciding how wide to cut the binding, determining how much binding I needed and then deciding if I had enough fabric left. There’s no getting more of this fabric — I bought it in September or October of 1989.

Well, the good news is I had a yard. Ok, I’ve got enough fabric.  Next I measured around the edge of the rings: 13-1/2″.  30 rings – 405″+ need extra for seams.

I then pulled a piece of the leftover binding from the placemats to check the width. I basted it to the quilt and decided with width was good.  That means I need 2-1/4″ binding.

According to to the chart over at Generations Quilt Patterns 3/4 yards of 40″ wide fabric (after selvedges are removed) will yield 449″ of binding which should be more than enough — especially since I have 43″ of usable width.

After I finish the grill, I’ll resume working on the binding for the DWR. 25 years is long enough for a quilt to be a UFO.

Stash Report

Given that I didn’t get my sewing machine out until late Thursday evening, it should come as no surprise that there is no fabric used.  Well, I did – the fabric necessary to make the “T” block, but since I’m waiting to count it at the end and the binding to Abbey Memories was counted last week, this week’s out count is 0.  But then again, I didn’t add any new fabric.

Another Finish

stainglass-done

This is Abbey Memories from Tricia Cribbs 8th Turning Twenty Book Stained Glass & Scraps. I started this quilt in a class in July 2012 and finished the top a few months later. It’s turn for quilting finally came up last week.

The fabrics — both the batiks and the black that I used for the leading came from Connecting Threads.  The batting is Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Black.  The top thread is Fil-Tec T-40 Cotton/Poly Corespun in Black.  The bobbin thread is Superiors Bottom Line in black.  I used just less than 1 M-size bobbin.

The quilting is “A Little Bit of Fluff”

After washing the quilt measures 55″ x 69″.

Another quilt off my UFO list!

T is for Tile Puzzle

DY - Tile Puzzle

The BOM for August is Tile Puzzle.  This block brings me up-to-date, at least until the next block is released.

All of my blocks can be seen HERE. These are part of Dorothy Young’s Alphabet BOM that is being run on the Yahoo! group apocketfullofmysteries. It’s not too late to join.

In Gear?

Yesterday I posted that I needed to get it into gear. Well, the sewing machine is out but I’m still stuttering.  It’s been a long time since I’ve had so many spots to fix on a machine stitched binding. But I’ll get it fixed and then move on to this month’s Alphabet BOM and the DWR binding. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.
