40 Day Challenge – Day 35

Yesterday I got a second wind and finished the corner triangles. Today, I started assembling the center – and ripping apart the borders I am using for my leader/ender. When I get to the end, I want to be able to put the borders on the quilt, but I’ve tweaked the borders.  Adding 16 blocks and using the original borders brings the quilt to approximately 102″ square. But I really would like an even larger quilt. I bought enough backing to increase the quilt to 120″, but that is really more quilt than I want and would have required another 20 blocks.

This is what I’m planing on doing. But of course now instead of the HST on each round facing the same way, they turn in the middle. I had 1 blue and all 4 of the black strings of HST pieced.  Of course, I haven’t even cut the gray HST as that’s what I’ve added, plus a 1″ narrow border between each row of HST. It should end up around 110″.  I’ll still have to do something to enlarge my backing as it is only 108″.  I’m thinking about a column of pinwheels down the center of the back. So even more piecing is in my future before I can even load it on the machine.

Since there is only a week left — I really thought the challenge went to the 17th. I need to check to see exactly when I started – I did a brief search for the binding fabric for the baby quilt.  It wasn’t “on the surface”. I hope it’s in one of the two boxes of tops waiting to be quilted. If it’s not, I’m up a creek.

40 Day Challenge – Day 33

Another long day at work, so I only got 3 setting triangles done.  Most of the black and white border is pieced – that is to say I have sewn all the pieces that I have made. I’ll need to make more since I’m making my quilt larger.

I have the units kitted up.  Those on my sewing table are complete units, the ones on my ironing station still need pieces.

40 Day Challenge – Day 32

Day 32 was another day of Frolic.  This time the side setting triangles.  Since I used the ‘kits’ cut during the mystery to make the extra blocks, I spent a good bit of time cutting fabric.  I know I need more 4-patches and neutral squares, but beyond that I’m not really sure what other pieces I’ll need.  I started getting confused, so decided the best thing to do was to start sewing the blocks.  Triangle #7 lacked 2 more seams, but then I realized I made the 3 color flying geese backwards and decided to call it a night.

40 Day Challenge – Day 31

I spent the 4th of July working on Frolic. 16 more blocks completed and the 3 with mistakes in them from the first 25 corrected.  After posting this picture on Facebook a friend called me to tell me she thought there was a mistake in the top right .  Yep, one of the 4-patches was turned. It has now been corrected.

Now it is on to the setting triangles.  It is proving to be challenging to figure out what needs to be cut since I changed my colors, but I will persevere.

40 Day Challenge – Day 30

Ten days left in my 40 Day Challenge and I probably should have put the binding on the baby 4-Patch Stacked Posy quilt then the only thing left would be Frolic. Perhaps I’ll do that tomorrow. Today, I finished 8 more blocks to Frolic. You’ll notice there are a few smaller blocks on the wall.  Those are the first blocks from the 2020-2021 Quiltville Leader/Ender Project – Easy Breezy.

Bonnie posted 2 different sizes and I’ve opted for the smaller 4 -1/2 inch blocks. The first two blocks I made as she showed, but given one block was getting made as I finished each Frolic block and I don’t have many pieces cut, I’m now only sewing one piece at the end of each line of stitching. I think I have 3 more blocks cut, so I’ll need to cut more blocks before I finish the rest of the Frolic blocks.

Tomorrow I hope to  finish the rest of the Frolic blocks, and at least determine what I  need to cut for the setting triangles.  Or maybe I will put the binding on the quilt. Here’s what’s left:

  • Bind Baby 4-Patch Stacked Posies

40 Day Challenge – Day 28 & 29

June 30th & July 1st were very busy at work.  I was on the phone non-stop from the time I got to my desk (2 hrs early yesterday) until I was finally able to step away (2 hrs late yesterday). Yes, July 1st was a 13 hour day as I did not get a break for lunch.  Needless to say I got very little done on the quilting front.

Wednesday I did determine what I needed to complete my extra 16 blocks.  I have “kits” which were cut and pieced to a point for the side triangles which I am going to use for my blocks.  I had to cut more neutral squares and will need more black & blue 4-patches. Yesterday I determined how many more  I’ll need for the rest of the quilt and started cutting my strips. when I cut 2 strips for the 4-patches from the same fabric instead of a wide strip for the geese, I decided I was too tired to continue and set my cutter down.  I was asleep by 8:30.

This picture was taken this morning (Friday). Today I plan to get the 4-patches done and start sewing the remaining blocks together. I was up early again because I went to bed so early, so perhaps a mid-day nap will get me back on track.  Waking up at 5 AM is just too early for me.

40 Day Challenge – Day 27

If I was making Frolic as written it would be time to move on to the setting triangles.  Instead, I’ve cut neutral squares to add to the setting triangle kits and have counted the number of 4-patches I need to make to make more blocks. Eventually I’ll need to cut more fabric for the setting triangles, but I’ll worry about that another day. The blocks are not in their final location. But if you see any turned pieces, please let me know.

Today I also decided on the fabric combination for my Allietare pillowcase. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll make it – or at least get the fabric cut so I can put it away.

This is what’s left on my list. With the 3 day holiday, I might just get the list completed in the next 13 days.

  • Bind Baby 4-Patch Stacked Posies

40 Day Challenge – Day 26

Given the number of items I’ve crossed off the Challenge List as done, I thought I’d take a break today.  But given the choice between cleaning my living room or sewing,  I opted to piece a few more blocks after taking a nap.  I got three done, then on the 4th, I turned a unit. At that point I decided to call it a night.

Here’s what’s left:

40 Day Challenge – Day 25

Alleitare is finished!  This was the 2015 Quiltville Mystery Quilt designed by Bonnie Hunter.  I finally got the border on it a few years ago at a quilt retreat and got it quilted before I went to Shipshewana 2 years ago. It sat in the To Be Bound stack because I didn’t know if I could do both a scalloped border and use Susie’s Magic Binding.  This afternoon I decided to just go for it.

Other tasks today included making another 6 Frolic blocks and delivering the quilt that needed the label.  Since I plan to make Frolic one block wider and longer 41 blocks and 16 side setting triangles. I now have 17 blocks completed. There will be more cutting of fabric before the top is completed.
