40 Day Challenge – Day 40

Day 40.  I have one of the pieced borders done. Although I have enough HST to get all but 6″ of another border done I hit a wall when I discovered that I do not have enough fabric for the inner and outer border. At that point I started second guessing myself a 3rd or 4th time on how I plan to do the borders.  All I know for certain is that I need 1 3/4″ inner border before the ribbon/barber pole border.

Possible color options are light gray, dark gray, black, neutral, or a blue.

I have to buy more fabric in every situation except for the neutral – and I think it causes the border to float too much.

A brief recap of the last 40 days:

  • Bound 7 quilts
  • Added a label and delivered an overdue quilt
  • Caught up on my Star Studded BOM
  • Quilted & bound the log cabin quilt
  • Hemmed 8 pairs of pant for my niece’s wedding
  • Made 5 pillowcases
  • Completed the center of Frolic

The challenge kept me going and I’m pleased with what I accomplished. If I can figure out my border situation I’ll be able to knock the rest of the list out in the next week or two. I cannot plan on keeping this pace up.

40 Day Challenge Day 10

The PANTS ARE HEMMED!

Yes, the pants, which had me in a panic have been hemmed.  I can only hope that they are not too short.  But if they are, since they are cuffed, it will be possible to length them.

Saturday morning, before I started working on the pants, I loaded up the log cabin quilt. I knew the backing was going to be close, so I added a leader to both the top and the bottom of the backing. There’s about 1″ of backing at the top of the quilt and this is all that is left at the bottom of the quilt. I’ve ordered more of this fabric to make pillowcases.

Once the pants were finished, I pulled out my BOM.  Or more accurately Blocks of the Month. I’m working on Star Studded through the LQS. So far I have in my possession fabric for 9 of 12 12-inch blocks and all 24 6-inch blocks.  I think June is the 9th month, so I’m just a bit behind having only completed 2 of the 12-inch blocks and 1 of the 6-inch blocked before today. There is a quilt guild board meeting the same evening this week as the BOM class, so it will be Saturday before I pick up this month’s block(s). I’ve updated the count in my list to reflect the correct block count as of today.

I have no idea what, if anything I’ll work on tomorrow. But here’s the updated list.

40 Day Challenge Day 9

Yesterday my sister came over to quilt a baby quilt, so I had to clear off the quilting machine, again. Although I don’t think I’ll leave the leaf of my sewing table up on a regular basis, it did prove to be a great place to stack the various projects I have going. From the front to the back. On the bottom of the first pile is Allietare. On top of it is the binding fabric, the baby/doll quilt to bind and fabric for the bonus pillowcases. The middle pile is the quit which I need to label and the logcabin quilt. Leaning against the last pile is my Star Studded BOM. The last pile are quilts which need to be washed and photographed. Next to the sewing machine is pair #6 of the pants which need to be hemmed.

I only got one pair of pants hemmed yesterday. I got a bit distracted.

Acrylic Pour videos have been popping up on my Facebook timeline. I saw one by Mixed Media Girl where she used supplies from the Dollar Store  and thought that would be an inexpensive way to try out the technique. This is my first attempt.

Today after I run to Fedex to ship a package, I’m going to do my best to finish the hemming so I can cross it off my list.  I may load the log cabin quilt and while it’s quilting I think I’ll work on the BOM. It would be nice if I had a few more blocks done before I picked up this month’s kit.

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.

40 Day Challenge – Day 7

Day 7 of the challenge had me sewing the binding strips together for Narragansett Blues before work and then ripping them out and sewing them together correctly before attaching the binding to the quilt after work. No pants were hemmed tonight.

The status report stands as it did after Day 6.

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.

40 Day Challenge – Day 6

Not much happened on the quilting front.  I cut the binding for Narragansett Blues, then hemmed 2 pair of pants. I cleaned up a bit of batting and backing from recent quilts, and tracked down some of the fabric for those “bonus”

Here’s what is left to do:

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.
  • Narragansett Blues
  • Sister Swap # 3 – The binding is made just needs to be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020

  • Bonus #3: Quilt, bind, label and make pillowcase (2) for Frolic.

40 Day Challenge – Day 5

Yesterday I decided how I’m going to bind for Narragansett Blues. I’ll use the blue backing fabric for the binding with the gold as the flange. But that’s not all I did.

I unpacked 2 boxes from the office. I haven’t posted about the changes I’ve made in the living room.  I painted, put in new flooring, purchased a new sofa and recliner and rearranged the furniture.  All of this required moving everything out of the living room and dinning room.  I think there were 32 small moving boxes of books and nicknacks, plus various crates. Most ended up in the back bedroom.  I’ve SLOWLY been unpacking.  Perhaps I need to add unpack boxes onto my challenge.

The first box contained yearbooks. There must be another box because that cabinet was full before the shuffling began.  The second box contained photo albums.

My wedding album is what is missing here. Currently it is on the hearth.  The “leather” cover has gotten sticky over the years so I need to do something so it doesn’t tear up the finish on the table.

But back to the real challenge.  I hemmed 2 pair of pants!

That leaves the following:

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.
  • Narragansett Blues
  • Sister Swap # 3 – The binding is made just needs to be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Then & Now 6/7/2020
  • Baby 4-Patch Stacked Posies
  • Tablerunner – Finally figured out what I am going to use – 6/7/2020
  • The quilt with the striped backing needs a label and delivered
  • I’m behind on my Star Studded BOM. I have fabric for 11 or 12 large blocks and 23 6-inch blocks.
  • The log cabin quilt needs to be quilted bound and labeled.
  • The blue, black and white quilt is my Frolic the goal is to finish the top.
  • Although not quilting, there are 9 8 pair of pants which need to be shortened.
    • 2 pair hemmed 6/8/2020
  • Bonus #1 – Pillowcases:
    • the customer quilt 6/6/2020
    • Allietaire
    • Narragansett Blues
    • Log cabin quilt (2)

    • Carolina Chain
    • Good Fortune
  • Bonus #3: Quilt, bind, label and make pillowcase (2) for Frolic.

40 Day Challenge – Day 4

This afternoon I bound this table runner. I made it to test a pattern I wrote, pulling fabric from my stash.  The fabrics didn’t work as well as I hoped, so it sat for 7 years before I quilted it.  Then it sat in the to be bound pile for 7 months until I found fabric to bind it with. Because I’m lazy I used Susie’s Magic Binding. I have to say that pop of dark green sets if off and now I think the fabrics work.  Or maybe it’s just because it’s finished.

Next up was the first pair of pants to be hemmed. When I realized I was going to have to CUT the pants, I wanted confirmation of the length. It’s a good thing I asked. My niece realized there have been some substitutions since she gave me the pants back in February/March and needed to double check the sizes/length. Someone must be taller as there is one pair I don’t have to hem.

While I was wait to hear from my niece, I started looking for fabric to bind Now and Later, which I’ve been calling Then and Now.  Well, actually I started to look for fabric to bind Narragansett Blues, but I realized I either used the fabric, or never had any to begin with. Since I’m not ready to tackle the binding for Allietare, Now and Later moved to the top.

I’m not sure what I planned to bind this quilt with – possibly blue given I quilted it with blue, but I like the green and yellow.

  • Bonus #1 – Pillowcases:
    • the customer quilt 6/6/2020
    • Allietaire
    • Narragansett Blues
    • Log cabin quilt (2)
  • Bonus #2: Pillowcases for quilts already completed
    • Christmas Crazy 8s
    • On Ringo Lake
    • En Provence (2)
    • Carolina Chain
    • Good Fortune
  • Bonus #3: Quilt, bind, label and make pillowcase (2) for Frolic.

40 Day Challenge – Day 3

Yes, I skipped Day 2.  I was playing with the Sherwin-Williams app. My room needs updating  – starting with ripping out the old powder blue carpet. The curtains are from when we moved into the house 21 years ago. I’d like something dramatic, but whatever I go with paint wise it has to go with my quilts and the bedframe can’t blend into the wall. Merlot may be the ticket.

In addition to these two quilts (Egg Money an Eleanor Burns pattern  & En Provence a Quiltville Mystery quilt) I will also have my black, blue, gray & white Frolic (also a Quiltville Mystery quilt) and a Hancock Fabrics BOM which I’m enlarging.

So what did I get done on Day 3? I bound the Customer quilt (delivering it Sunday afternoon) and made a pillowcase to go with it.

I also bound Sister Swap # 3.

That leaves the following:

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.
  • Narragansett Blues
  • Sister Swap # 3 – The binding is made just needs to be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Then & Now
  • Baby 4-Patch Stacked Posies
  • Tablerunner – Finally figured out what I am going to use
  • The quilt with the striped backing needs a label and delivered
  • I’m behind on my Star Studded BOM. I have fabric for 11 or 12 large blocks and 23 6-inch blocks.
  • The log cabin quilt needs to be quilted bound and labeled.
  • The blue, black and white quilt is my Frolic the goal is to finish the top.
  • Although not quilting, there are 9 pair of pants which need to be shortened.
  • Bonus #1 – Pillowcases:
    • the customer quilt 6/6/2020
    • Allietaire
    • Narragansett Blues
    • Log cabin quilt (2)
  • Bonus #2: Pillowcases for quilts already completed
    • Christmas Crazy 8s
    • On Ringo Lake
    • En Provence (2)
    • Carolina Chain
    • Good Fortune
  • Bonus #3: Quilt, bind, label and make pillowcase (2) for Frolic.

My plan for tomorrow is to tackle the first pair of pants and bind the tablerunner.

40 Day Challenge

I’d like to get back to blogging about my quilting. It seems that I generally just post to Facebook anymore.  In one of my Facebook groups someone asked “What are you working on?” For me this morphed into this 40 Day challenge. My goal is to get everything on this list done.

This first picture is a stack of quilts that need to be bound.

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.
  • Narragansett Blues
  • Sister Swap # 3 – The binding is made just needs to be attached and stitched down
  • Then & Now
  • Baby 4-Patch Stacked Posies
  • Tablerunner – Finally figured out what I am going to use

Believe it or not there’s more work in this pile than the binding pile.

The quilt with the striped backing needs a label and delivered

I’m behind on my Star Studded BOM. I have fabric for 11 or 12 large blocks and 23 6-inch blocks.

The log cabin quilt needs to be quilted bound and labeled.

The blue, black and white quilt is my Frolic the goal is to finish the top.

Although not quilting, there are 9 pair of pants which need to be shortened. This is driving the 40 days.

Bonus #1: Pillowcases for the customer quilt, Allietaire, Narragansett Blues, and the log cabin quilt (2)

Bonus #2: Pillowcases for quilts already completed – Christmas Crazy 8s, On Ringo Lake, En Provence (2), Carolina Chain, Good Fortune

Bonus #3: Quilt, bind, label and make pillowcase (2) for Frolic.

It should be an interesting 40 -45 days.
