Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Stash Report

No fabric was used this week – I’m still quilting Oklahoma Backroads and the Double Wedding Ring.  I did however pop in the LQS and pick up these four fabrics.  I was planning only getting the top three,  but that stripe just screamed “binding”.

So, my numbers are up a bit this week.

Fabric Added this Week: 4 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 136.261 yards

Fabric Used this Week:  0 yards

QA Wednesday and Quilting Goals for September

A combination post today since not only is it Quilting Accountability Wednesday, it’s the first of September.

Overall, I don’t plan on slowing down — one of these days I may regret that, but hey, if I don’t get everything on my list done it wasn’t that important, or can roll over to next month. Here it is 8 months through the year and I’m pretty happy with what I have accomplished quilting wise and what I have left to finish. Essentially there are 4 things left on my list for the year that I’ll think I’ll accomplish:

  • Keep up with the Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler BOW
    • I missed some SBS blocks earlier in the year, but I plan on making an average of 2 blocks a week until the end of the year.  If I do this and make one extra, I’ll be at 60 for the year and 100 blocks overall.
  • Finish my Double  Wedding Ring Quilt
    • If I keep up with one ring every two days, I might not get it bound and on the bed by the end of November, but it will happen by the end of year.
  • Quilt one of my Bonnie Hunter Quilt tops
    • I now have six tops and two in the piecing stages.  I’m quilting Oklahoma Backroads (OB)  and would like to get it finished by mid-month
  • Quilt Green & Cream swap blocks – This is a quilt-as-you-go project.  I think I have 3 or 4 of the 20 blocks quilted.  I’m sure between now and the end of year I’ll be able to knock this out.

As for the 5th goal – finish anything I start – I’m not doing as well on this as I would like.  Blue Ridge Beauty and Star Struck are still being pieced.  Once I get the quilting of my machine, I’ll work on Star Struck and  use Blue Ridge Beauty as my leader/ender project.  Texas Braid has made it to the quilt top stage – so not so bad.  That leaves the Red, White & Blue shop hop sampler that I’ve started piecing the blocks – this has been set aside for the moment; the dragonfly quilt which I won’t start piecing until I get them all embroidered and the 3″ pinwheels which may or may not become a quilt.

So, for September the goals are:

  • At least 8 SBS blocks
  • The September KVQG BOM
  • Finish Quilting and Bind Oklahoma Backroads
  • Quilt at least 15 rings on the DWR
  • Make progress on the Cream & Green quilt
  • Make progress on Star Struck

Specifically for this next week since it includes a 3 day weekend:

  • Finish Oklahoma Backroads
  • Quilt daily on the DWR
  • Piece at least half of the remaining blocks ( I think that’s 20)
  • Piece 4 SBS blocks

I’ve probably over committed myself, but if I don’t aim high, I sure can’t  get there.

August Recap

At the beginning of the month my goals were to piece 13 blocks for various projects; resume quilting my Double Wedding Ring; quilt, bind and label a baby quilt; finish piecing Star Struck and quilt Texas Braid if there was time. Overall, I’m really pleased.

I think I ended up with 15 blocks, I’ve nearly completed two rows of rings on the DWR, and the baby quilt is ready to be delivered. Instead of finishing Star Struck, I finished Oklahoma Backroads, pieced the backing and have it about 3/4 quilted!

I nearly forgot. I got a great idea for some pre-printed embroidery dragonflies — and only made one. The rest are in my bag for the mini-retreat in a couple of weeks.

What’s On My Design Wall

The wall still has bits and pieces of what was up there last week. However, this past weekend, and into the foreseeable future, I’m quilting, not piecing. I’ve completed 5 of the 7 rings on the second row of the DWR. When I wasn’t hand quilting, I was machine quilting on Oklahoma Backroads.

There’s enough quilting to hold the layers together through repeated washings, but I’m going to add a bit more. I plan to stitch in the ditch (or in the vicinity) across the width and down the length of the quilt, bowing out at the star points. My hope is to highlight the stars. Too bad I didn’t realize this was my plan before I had the first layer of quilting done – stitching diagonally through the light chains.

Stash Report

It’s amazing how much the fabric usage will jump when you make a backing. Combine that with a bunch of the SBS blocks and a couple of swap blocks and the number is quite nice. Nothing fabric came in so that helps as well.

That’s Oklahoma Backroads on the sewing machine. I’m probably about 1/3 of the way through it. I finally decided how to quilt it — I just hope I get the effect I was going after. I really do need to learn to do free motion quilting.

To the numbers:

Fabric Added this Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 132.261 yards 136.261 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 5.812 yards

Fabric Used to Date: 64.418 yards

Net Stash for 2010: 67.843 yards

QCC Review

This stack of quilts still meets the Quality Control Cat standards.

Making Progress

I found a length of leaf fabric in my stash — I think I got this from S last year when she was clearing out her stash. It wasn’t quite long enough to be a backing for Oklahoma Backroads, so I lengthened it. I’ve got a spool of khaki thread which will blend nicely with both the front and the back, so now all I have to do is sandwich the quilt and decide how I’m going to quilt it.

Since I hope to start quilting tomorrow, I needed to finish up any piecing I wanted to do. These are the two swap blocks, so now I need to get them in the mail.

Off to quilt on the DWR for a few minutes.

QA Wednesday

    It’s Wednesday again!

    Last week  had simple goals:

    • Continue working on the DWR – working on daily, missed one day
    • Make at least two SBS Blocks (I need to do 8 more this month). – Got all 8 done!
    • Make two swap blocks. – made one
    • Don’t work on the dragonflies. – done! — or is it not done?

I kited up everything I need for the dragonflies and put them in the bag I take to guild.  This bag is hung on the end of my shelves and currently my library bag is hanging in front of it.  So between the deterrent of them not being easily assessable and that I stayed busy on the SBS and DWR no progress was made on the dragonflies – which is a good thing.  (I need some hand work to take to the guild retreat next month).

Progress is being made on the DWR.  I’m on the second row and this row is going quicker.  I think I’m still on track to finish the quilting in November.

I pushed this past week and finished 10 blocks for my SBS – 1 for each week of the SBS BOW and 5 for the SBS Offline Quilters.  Since these are 6″ block, my leaders and enders are larger than most of the block pieces (currenly working on 4″ HSTs as my L&E project)

So what do I want to get accomplished this week?

    • Get the label on the baby quilt (my great-nephew arrived last week!)

    • Continue working on the DWR
    • Make two swap blocks
    • Piece the backing for Oklahoma Backroads and decide on a quilting design

    Another SBS Block

    L8 – Kansas Troubles

This is the 10th block I’ve made this month for my Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler. That’s one for each week of the SBS BOW and 5 from the SBS Offline Quilters Challenge. It brings my total up to 64 out of 140 blocks.

There’s a new tab “sbs” which shows all of the blocks I’ve completed on a virtual design wall. Unfortunately I haven’t figured out how to just plug in my latest blocks to update the wall on-line. What you see is a screen shot of the “wall” I have on my laptop. Don’t expect it to be updated more than once a month.
