Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Look What Came in the Mail…

Four yards of Rrrbbit – Multi colored Dragonflies by Barb Tourtillotte for Clothworks.  I ordered it from The Quilt Shoppe last week to use as the backing of my Dragonfly quilt.  It is even better than I expected.

Look at how close my dragonflies match the fabric!  I had no idea this fabric was out there.

Labor Day Weekend,  I said something about looking into Spoonflower to design a backing fabric for the dragonfly quilt.  After seeing how much it would cost, I used fabshophop.com and searched “dragonfly”.

The fabric practically glows.  I had Fairy Frost strips on my cutting table when I opened the package (yes, I finally started this quilt) and when I set it on top of them I decided the dragonflies would look good with Fairy Frost.

So, with the ideas popping in my head I have to decide if I want more dragonfly fabric….

SBS Block

J4 – Autumn Leaf

This month’s challenge for the SBS Offline Quilters list is Autumn Leaf as a welcome to fall and 4 blocks from the following list in remembrance of summer:

I’ve previously completed the last two on the list, so it appears that I’ll be doing a bit of hand work this month, as 3 of the 5 remaining blocks are appliqué.  And yes, I hand appliquéd the stem on the leaf.

QA Wednesday

I made a big deal about fewer goals this week since I didn’t have a 3 day weekend.   But I still didn’t get everything done.  Between the push to finish Oklahoma Backroads and playing all day Saturday, I was worn out.  The only reason  I have 2 SBS blocks done is that I knew if I didnt’ get the second one done I’d only be able to cross off one item from my list.  Perhaps this Quilting Accountability really works!

  • Finish Oklahoma Backroads – Done!
  • Quilt daily on the DWR – No
  • Piece 2 SBS blocks – Done!
  • Make this month’s KVQG BOM – No

Also distracting me was the fabric my sister-in-law gave me.  There was a package of charm squares and a handful of similar FQs.  Although smaller that I typically like to make baby quilts, this quilt top will be great to practice free motion quilting on.

Only the white fabric will count on my Stash Report Sunday since  I haven’t added the gifted fabric in.  I found a yellow and white print in my stash which I’ll use for the backing.  Now to find a piece of batting big enough or piece one together.

Now for next week.

  • Get back on the DWR –I’m behind schedule
  • Make the September KVQG BOM
  • Piece 2 SBS Blocks

Check out the link over at Bari’s to see if others got met their goals for the week.

SBS Block Due 9/19

I4 – Anvil

Another substitute as this week’s block is J3 – Farmer’s Daughter which I made last September.

What’s On My Design Wall

There’s not much on my design wall this week.  Since finishing Oklahoma Backroads I haven’t gotten going again.  I did however pull out a new pattern I picked up called “A Mid-Winter’s Night” by Deb Eggers.

The pattern uses the Tri-Rec tools and the blocks are designed to finish at 9″.

But I have to make things difficult, so I tried making a block that finishes at 3″.  I want to make a miniature quilt for the Guild auction in April.  I’m not sure if I’ll make 8 more of these blocks, or go back to the pinwheels I made a few weeks ago (bottom right corner of picture).

Check out what others are doing by following the links over at Patchwork Times.

SBS Block Due 9/12

K2 – The Friendship Quilt

Technically the block due this week is N10 Diamond Friendship,  but I made that block a while back.

Stash Report

Oklahoma Backroads is now bound.  Unfortunately that 20″ of red fabric I used for the binding no where near offsets the fabric which was purchased this week — and I was also given some fabric which I haven’t counted yet.

I can’t even explain it all – except to say that when I’m traveling I never pass an open quilt shop and I found one with a pre-inventory sale going on.

Here are the numbers:

Fabric Added this Week: 9.5 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 145.761 yards

Fabric Used this Week: .555 yards

Fabric Used to Date: 64.973 yards

Net Stash for 2010: 80.788 yards

Clearly I’m going to have to get on the ball and get some backings pieced — or something to get my numbers down.

Scraps of Quilts Past

Last week before our road trip, my DH and I dug through a ton of boxes in the basement.  We never knew for certain what we would find when we opened a box.  I opened one and found this shoe bag.

It contained the scraps from my first bed size quilt made in April 1980.   I’ve written about the quilt in these two previous posts:

My First Quilt

First Quilt Revisited

Looking at a picture 0f the quilt, it appears that I’m missing a sample of the fabric I used as the petals.

There’s a ‘chunk’ of the green and several larger scraps of the yellow print.  I may just have to revisit this combination again since I haven’t seen the quilt in years.

Oklahoma Backroads is Quilted!

Tomorrow I trim and start binding.

QA Wednesday

After I figured out what I was going to work on over the weekend, my DH and I made the decision to take a road trip to visit his family. Needless to say, I was limited to handwork – although I did show my SIL how to use a serger.

  • Finish Oklahoma Backroads – no
  • Quilt daily on the DWR – took the quilt with me and worked on it the days we didn’t travel
  • Piece at least half of the remaining blocks ( I think that’s 20) [Star Struck] – no
  • Piece 4 SBS blocks – no

On the other hand, I stitched some of my dragonflies.

There is less on this week’s list since there is no holiday to give me an extra day of quilting.

  • Finish Oklahoma Backroads
  • Quilt daily on the DWR.
  • Piece 2 SBS blocks
  • Make this month’s KVQG BOM

Check out the links at Bari’s to see if extra quilt was accomplished due to the long weekend.
