SBS Block Due 6/13

K1 – Road to Oklahoma

On my printed quilting goals sheet, I listed 12 SBS blocks to do, over and beyond the weekly blocks, which at the time had not been announced. Realizing two blocks I listed I already had done, I picked out another 5 blocks to add to the list so I could complete the first block on each row. After making 4 blocks this weekend, I looked though my list and decide the next block would be K1 — but recognizing that it was an easy block, passed and worked on something else. Then this morning K1 was announced as this week’s block.

I’d like to get another 3 or 4 done this week, but we’ll see.

What’s On My Design Wall

This week I have Star Struck on my wall. The current plan is to make 80 blocks — 40 red and 40 blue and set them side by side 8 across by 10 down with no border. All of the quarter blocks have the light square sewn on and stitched twice for bonus red/light and blue/light HST. I’ve just begun working on the gold squares.

Stash Report

Yesterday I made another SBS block. This one is N1 – Courthouse Steps. These 6″ blocks just don’t take a whole lot of fabric. I also made a 12″ swap block and added the light corners to most of the Star Struck blocks.

This week I found space for more of the fabric from Mom,

and bought a bit of gold Dimples to use as the accent corners on Star Struck.

Fabric Added this Week: 11.33 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 131.511 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 4.625 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 42.882 yards

Net Stash for 2010: 84.004 yards

My math was off last week and I corrected it. But I’m simply not sewing as fast as it’s coming in. See if others are meeting their goals by checking out the links at Patchwork Times.

SBS Blocks

C1 – Contrary Husband

A2 – Shoo-Fly

Yesterday I started off with Contrary Husband. I made a bunch of these for the Blue & Brown SBS swap last summer. Most of the blocks I tested using 30’s reproduction, but I guess I figured this block was easy enough and didn’t. Once I had an easy block under my belt last night, I moved on to this week’s block with that pesky applique. Once that was done, I decided I need another easy block and picked Shoo-Fly.

I sat down at my machine and started to sew and had a moment of hesitation. “Boy are those pieces big, did I cut them right?” I had 2 1/2″ and 3″ squares in my hand — Huge compared to the pieces from the previous two blocks and my stack of 2″ leader/ender squares.

B-1 Stamp Baskets

This has it all — that is all that I’m not fond of — weird measurements that can’t be cut large and trimmed down, triangles that have to be sewn as triangles and applique!

I persevered and got it made.

June’s Quilting Goals

It’s June so time to figure out what I’m planning on accomplishing quilting wise this month. To start off I’m adding –add the borders to the pink Carolina Christmas baby quilt so I can check it off 🙂

Keep up with the SBS BOW & make extra blocks — Can I get 17 blocks done this month? That will catch me up for the year.
Make 3 birthday swap blocks
Finish quilting and bind Dancing Flowers – this has to be done by July 19th
Resume quilting on the DWR
Finish Star Struck Top
Ship out a Baby Quilt — which may require quilting — I have to pick from 2 or 3 that are already quilted or quilt one of my several baby tops.

This is the backing and binding I’ve picked for the latest baby quilt. That backing should hide any quilting mistakes I make.

QA Wednesday

Simple goals last week:

Finish cutting up the purple scraps – DONE
Cut the remaining blue bricks – DONE
Make a decision on the pink Carolina Christmas blocks – DONE — well the decision is.

This week’s goals will be almost as simple:

Add the border to the pink Carolina Christmas blocks
Make this week’s SBS BOW and 3 make up blocks
Resume the hand quilting on my DWR — aiming for 15 minutes a day

I’m still plugging away at my Star Struck quilt, but since I WANT to work on it, I’ll use it as a reward as I check off some of these other items. Think it will work?

May’s Recap

I’m looking at my list of quilting goals from May 1st and it feels like I missed half of them. But then I take a look at what I accomplished and say “Wow!”

Keep up with the SBS BOW & make a few extra blocks – didn’t make a single block.
Work on Scrap Basket – specifically blues and neutrals – Not only cleared the blues and neutrals, emptied the basket!
Complete the Carolina Christmas Top – Technically this is complete, but I’m not counting it until I get the borders on the 2nd baby quilt.
Finish Dancing Flowers – Finished the top and started quilting — I’ll call this one halfway done.
Ship out 2 baby quilts – I got one shipped out.
Resume hand quilting on the Double Wedding Ring – Didn’t even look at the quilting frame.
Make 4-patch pillow case – Done May 1st.

What’s on My Design Wall

Stuck to my design wall this morning is the second baby quilt from the leftover Carolina Christmas blocks. I’ve pieced the borders and have them up on the wall trying to decide if they work. I’m leaning toward “Yes”.

But what I’m really working on today is the red white and blue Star Struck. Since this picture was taken, I’ve finished sewing all of the bricks together and have started sewing the 2 1/2″ light squares to the red and blue to make points.

My birthday was last week, and for the last few years I’ve participated in a Birthday FQ Swap. These are the beautiful fabrics which I received.

I also participated in a new to me shop hop. Some fabric came home with me — but not much. A few FQs and a charm pack for my Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler, one just because, a music (it’s hard to stop collecting those) and a 2 yard piece which I’ll probably use for the backing of the 2nd baby quilt from my Carolina Christmas blocks. This shop hop did a shop hop quilt, and since the theme was red, white & blue I only bought the blocks since I’ll put them with the red, white and blue blocks I received in the birthday block swap I’m participating in (post on that later). Since some of the shops have pre-cut the pieces and I just have to sew them together, I’m not going to count that fabric in — nor will I count it out.

I did get some sewing done this week and some I was able to count in this week’s report. Borders sew for the baby quilt and enough blue and white or red and white bricks sewn together to make 34 Star Struck blocks.
