Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Stash Report

Last week I finished piecing the backing for the Red Disappearing 9-Patch. That’s all the fabric that I used. The Green Disappearing 9-Patch is quilted, so next week I should have binding and pillowcase fabric to report.

TBT – Magnolia Wall Hangings

Magnolia Twisting Star 24 diameter

I’m not a big kit buyer, but when my friends and I were on our self-directed Iowa Shop Hop back in 2005, I spotted this wall hanging at Quilting Connections in Ames, Iowa. The pattern is Twisting Star Table Toppers from Quilt Tales. I knew I needed to make it for my mother as she was decorating her new home with magnolias. I finally got it made it in December 2006. This is the 24″ table topper.

Magnolia Twisting Star

A few years later when my first great-nephew was born, my friends and I traveled to Saint Louis to meet him and of course do a shop hop along the way. On that trip I spotted the magnolia and stripe fabric. I called my husband and directed him to the pattern in my sewing room — quite a feat given the state of the sewing room at that time.  He read off the yardage requirements and I bought enough fabric to make 4 more toppers. These went to my sister-in-laws and aunt from Mississippi.

Warm and Natural batting was used and my favorite khaki thread. I created pockets on the side for balsa wood stays and sewed plastic rings to the top corners for hanging.

Candlemat 13 diameter

This is a 13″ candle mat made from the same pattern made after I made Mom’s quilt. If was for a Christmas swap in the quilt club I was in back in 2006.

Sew Scrappy Challenge Quilt – Week 2

sewscrappy1020

Tuesdays between now and Thanksgiving I am working on my Sew Scrappy quilt as part of Jo’s “finish a UFO before Bonnie’s mystery quilt starts challenge”. Sew Scrappy is from Evelyn Sloppy’s book 40 Fabulous Quick-Cut Quilts. I don’t think I have any Bonnie Hunter quilts in pieces, but I want/need to finish this one and I’ve been stalling for 3 years.

Tuesday’s task was to cut the strip sets into 1-1/2″ units so I can sew them into 25-patches for the alternate blocks. That’s done, so next week I can start stitching them together.

Pop over to Jo’s Country Junction to see how others are doing the UFO they’ve picked to finish before the mystery starts.

One Quilt Basted

GreenD9pbasted

I hoped to get both Disappearing 9-Patch quilts basted, but only managed to get one done. I’ll do the other tonight, so I can tuck in the leaves on the table and move the chair back into place.  I also need to spend some time working on Sew Scrappy.

What’s on My Design Wall

A4Areadytobequilted

My sewing area looks like a quilt factory exploded in it. So, I’ve carefully curated the photos I’m about to show. This is Aiming for Accuracy. The batting is cut to length and the top and backing are pinned to the zippers. The plan is to quilt it next Monday.

dp9backing

On the ironing board is the backing for the Green Disappearing 9-Patch. It’s been folded up for a couple of weeks, so I pressed it. There are 2 lengths of batting sitting on top – one for the Green D9P and the other is for the Red D9P. It is my hope that I get both quilts basted tomorrow evening so I can start quilting later this week. The backing for the Red D9P is still pinned to the shelves.

On the design wall proper are blocks for Sew Scrappy. This is the picture from last week as it’s a disaster area in front of the design wall.

sewscrappy1013-2

I’ve got a busy week ahead of me quilt wise – basting quilts Monday, work on Sew Scrappy Tuesday, prep Orange Crush for quilting Wednesday and quilt the DP9 quilts afterwards.

Another Backing is Made

Looks like the squares should have gotten mixed up more, but it will do. Now on to the basting.

Stash Report

bobbins

Apparently it’s a good thing that I post about what I get done in my quilting, because I was convinced that the only thing I’ve been working on is the shirt backing and it’s still needs 4 more seams. But I made the Hardware top which I finished Monday night and I finished up 20 blocks to Sew Scrappy on Tuesday.

The big purchase this week was bobbins. I need the lavender and white ones for the quilts I’m quilting on the 26th and while I was at the store I picked up the bobbins the other quilt I’ll do on the long arm in November.

TBT on Friday

Pastel Pinwheels

Earlier this week I added the Flickr app to my smarter than me phone.  I found all sorts of pictures dating back 2002 when I was still sewing garments and knitting. It also means I found the only picture I  have of the quilt which gave me the Quilt Pox.

Oh sure, my first full size quilt was done back in 1980, and I made a couple of quilts as ‘model garments’ when I was working at Northwest Fabrics & Crafts in 1990-1991, but it wasn’t until I made Pastel Pinwheels for my nephew that I the Quilt Pox took hold.

The pattern is from Quilt it for Kids for 2000. I thought it was a great pattern and collected pastel flanels to make it, but back then I thought you needed to know where a quilt was headed before you could start it. — I’ve gotten over that.  Anyway, the pattern and fabric sat until my nephew was born and then I went shopping for additional fabric.

I started the quilt on 7/28/2003 and finished it 8/2/2003.

Sew Scrappy Challenge Quilt

whsorch

Last week I decided to set aside Tuesdays between now and Thanksgiving to work on my Sew Scrappy quilt as part of Jo’s “finish a UFO before Bonnie’s mystery quilt starts challenge”.  What I didn’t know was that I would decide a quilt toward the bottom of my Crazy Challenge II list would get bumped to the top and I forgot I was attending a school concert.

I squeezed in 20 minutes of quilting just on Sew Scrappy between the end of my work day and leaving for the concert, attaching the modified flying to 20 of the blocks and 20 cornerstones.

sewscrappy1013

When we got home, I spent another 30 minutes or so and finished up the blocks.  I now have all 40 of these blocks done and need to make 38 of the 2nd block.

sewscrappy1013-2

The 2nd block will take a bit longer to make as I only have the strip sets made.

Hop over to Jo’s Country Junction to see how others are doing on their projects.  My goal for the rest of the week is to get the 2 Disappearing 9-patch quilts basted. Have to finish a quilt back first.
