Quilting and Stuff by Knitnoid

Author Archives: Pam

I made my first quilted item as a visual aid for a math project in 7th grade. Over the next 25 years quilting was hit or miss, but quilting took over all the other crafts I've done in 2003.

My momma passed away Monday evening in her sleep at Kansas City Hospice House. This photo collage doesn’t begin to show her complete life, but it’s the pictures I have on my computer.

I love her and I will miss her, but I know she’s no longer in pain.

Stash Report

Nothing In, Nothing Out. I’ve been working, sleeping or sitting with Momma at the hospital all week.

Mom was readmitted to the hospital Monday night. They moved her from the med/surg floor to CCCU (comprehensive cardiac care unit) Saturday morning. She’s sleeping under her quilt. Turns out it’s just the right size for a hospital bed.

Stash Report

With the finish of Mom’s quilt and pillowcase, and this week’s SBS block, I used a tad over 1 3/4 yards. However, I’m itching to buy a stack of 30’s FQs for the SBS quilt. I’m getting bored with what I’ve got in my bin. But, since I need to send in my retreat fee’s shortly, those 30’s FQs will have to wait.

Here’s the report:

Fabric Added this Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 11.264 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 1.792 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 21.621 yards

Net Stash for 2010: -10.357 yards

Who knows, at this rate I might just use 100 yards and reduce my stash by 50 by the end of the year. See how others are doing over at Patchwork Times.

SBS Block Due 2/21

I-7 Right Hand of Friendship

This is the first block I’ve made in about 3 weeks. I’ve been running back and forth to the hospital since January 26th and working on Mom’s quilt. I finished the quilt Wednesday and she was released from the hospital this afternoon.

She still a bit wobbly and we’ve got to work out the new meds, so I’ll spend a few days at her home (about an hour from me) until home health starts coming out and my brother figures the meds out. I’ve brought a red work snowman and my bag of yo-yo supplies. Now that I think about it, I probably should have brought the box of shirts my brother asked me to lengthen. Oh, well.

Mom’s Quilt is Finished

Late last night I finished Mom’s quilt.  This is the one I started in the last weekend in January, right before she went into the hospital.  I took it up to her this evening and she loves it.  She said she’ll sleep under it tonight and then when I take her home tomorrow, it will go on her chair.

Even though it’s not bed sized (51 x 67 before shrinking) I made a matching pillow case.  I used a bit of the border fabric to make the label.

Happy Birthday, Momma.

What’s on My Design Wall

The wall is bare except for the birthday blocks which won’t go out until later in the month. I took down the cat panel to take to the hospital to show my mom.

The picture above is from mom’s quilt. The one I need to have finished by Thursday. All the quilting is done except for the snowballs. What I wanted and what I’m quilting in the snowball blocks are different. I simply haven’t had the time or energy to do anything more complicated. I’ve got 15 more snowball blocks to quilt then I can bind, label and wash the quilt. Since Mom is doing so much better, I shouldn’t have to spend as much time at the hospital this week and it will be ready for her 70th birthday on Thursday.

Stash Report

Generally, I sew every day. This week I didn’t turn my sewing machine on until Saturday afternoon. I finally got the borders on mom’s quilt, and I got the backing made. So today, I get to baste and start the quilting.

This week’s report is as follows:

Fabric Added this Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 11.264 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 4.341 yards

What’s On My Design Wall

I’m still working on the birthday quilt, specifically the borders. But in the meantime, I still have the swap blocks up on the design wall and the Caterwauling panel.

Not that I’m going to rush into this anytime soon, but I’m thinking about how I want to use the panel. At the moment, I’m considering cutting the blocks apart and then setting them with black and white pieced blocks with a splash of color. Now what blocks is the question. I’m leaning toward blocks with a ‘cat themed’ name. My husband also suggested looking up our cat’s names. That provided entertainment for a few minutes last night.

Stash Report

This week the only piecing I got done was sewing blocks together for 3 rows on Mom’s quilt and sewing the rows together. There are 3 more rows plus the borders, then I can start quilting. The quilt fabric has already been counted, but I used a few more squares on the Oklahoma Backroads as leader/enders which I can count.

Saturday my brother came to town and stayed with my mother to give me a break. I hit 3 quilt shops to get fabric for a sweatshirt my mom wants me to decorate for her, the backing for her birthday quilt (lavender) and one impulse buy for me — the cat panel. Then I took a nap. My brother is with Mom this morning and my sister is driving in for this afternoon. I’m going to take another nap and work on Mom’s quilt and sweatshirt today before I head back to the hospital. Surprisingly, I’m still ahead of my stash.

This week’s report is as follows:

Fabric Added this Week: 9.58 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 11.264 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 0.217 yards (50 2 1/2″ squares)
Fabric Used to Date: 15.488 yards

Net Stash for 2010: -4.224 yards

Birthday Swap Blocks

Cross one thing off my February list.  These blocks are for March birthdays.  Now to find an envelope for them and more importantly not lose them before I need to mail them.
