What’s On My Design Wall

Over the weekend I finished cutting the shirt squares. Then I started stitching them into quilt backs. The one pictured above will go with the Orange Disappearing 9-Patch. Pictured below is half of the backing for one of the other Disappearing 9-Patch quilts.

In the bottom left corner is the stack of quilt tops which I’m planning on quilting. I hope to get all of these backs knocked out this week, then I’ll start a marathon quilting session. I’ve got a 4-day weekend coming up.

Disappearing 9-Patch #3

greendp9topThe Green Disappearing 9-Patch is now a top. That makes 3 I’ve made this summer. Now it’s on to the quilt backs. I have 50 squares cut from the shirts and I need 410. That number is up from the original 320 as I will be finishing Nifty Thrifty this fall as well.

I’ll cut all the squares for the backings, then alternate piecing a backing with quilting a top.  That should give my shoulders and neck a break.

Quilts From My Past – Which Way Is Up?

Today I’m linking this edition of Quilts From My Past to Krista’s Throwback Thursday post.

This quilt was started in the November 2004 on-line virtual retreat hosted by Wonder Cut Ruler. I’m not sure when I purchased the Wonder Cut Ruler, but I know this is the first quilt I made with it. As part of the ‘retreat’ we simply made the 9-patch blocks. The final layout was up to the individual quilter.

My husband and I jointly worked on the layout. He’d tell me which block to turn and I was crawling on the floor flipping the blocks around. Once I we had the layout worked out I got the center sewn together. It was probably 18 months before I got the borders on the quilt and got it quilted and bound.

The outer border and backing is a cool looking fabric. I originally bought some to make a reindeer on my Christmas Block of the Month.

Once I decided the fabric was perfect of my quilt, I raided a friend’s stash as she bought the rest of the bolt!

The quilting is simple.  Straight lines through the “arrows”. flying geese in the light border and a diamond cable in the outer border which I found in a Georgia Bonesteel book.

The quilt measures 69″ x 86″. Warm and Natural batting.

This quilt is well used.  It’s on my half of the bed.

480 Tumblers

July 1st I started this year’s Leader/Ender Challenge that Bonnie Hunter is hosting. My tumblers are from recycled shirts. Thus far I’ve managed to stitch 480 tumblers into 240 pairs while working on the Disappearing 9-Patch quilts over the past 7 weeks.

Speaking of the Disappearing 9-Patch, I didn’t quite get the 3rd section sewn together. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll finish the quilt top tonight. Since I’ve run out of light tumblers. I’ll stitch the pairs into 4’s until I finish the D9P. Then more tumblers both light and dark will be cut as I cut the squares for the backings.

Half a Quilt Top

I suppose technically, it’s just shy of half of the quilt top as there are 7 rows in the bottom half. Here’s the 3rd section ready to be stitched together. (The white squares are tags with a letter or number so I know where to put the block.)

What’s On My Design Wall

I’ve started sewing blocks into rows for the Green Disappearing 9-Patch. This is 1/4 of the blocks. Since Monday is a travel day for the Royals, there won’t be a baseball game to distract me after work and I could get this top finished. That is unless we end up going through the clutter in the basement, in which case I’ll carve out enough time to at least get this section done and the next one up on the wall.

Progress

Last night after watching the first inning of the ballgame, I turned the radio on and started sewing 3-patches into 9-patches.  23 done, 10 to go.  Here they are sorted “lights and darks”. I have no idea where the remaining 10 will fall.  I’ll have to stitch them to see.

A little bit of progress.  This is the stack of 3-patches for 13 of the big 9-patches. After I get these made, I still have 13 more to make.  I think tonight I’ll listen to the ballgame instead of watching it on television and see if I can make any progress on this quilt.

What’s On My Design Wall

Truthfully? Nothing.  But that’s because I finished the Red Disappearing 9-Patch late Friday night. Here’s a better picture than the one I posted Saturday morning. But have no fear, I’ve got my rotary cutter out.  I’m wading back through my shirts, cutting 9″ squares to make backings for the DP9 quilts, tumblers for the leader ender challenge, tracing star points and trimming up the scraps to go into my pre-cut boxes.

When I started cutting for the backing, I thought I’d be lucky to empty half a box, but if I’ll go ahead and take care of scraps instead of folding them back into the box, who knows how much space I’ll have when I’m done.

The Red Disappearing 9-Patch is a Top!

Perhaps it’s because the Royals went to the World Series last fall, but I find myself wanting to watch the baseball games. Last night was no different since we weren’t working in the yard. But at the same time, I knew I only had about 2 hours of work left on the Red Disappearing 9-Patch. I decided I would sew and listen to the game on the radio.  That’s when I discovered that my trusty CD Player/Radio box wouldn’t switch to AM! I think my husband thought I was crazy, but he couldn’t get the switch to move either.  He finally remembered this work site radio out in the garage. I really need to dust it off.

With the game on, I finished up the DP9 before the 7th inning stretch.

I took it back to show my husband and the cats followed.  When it stops raining I’ll try to get better picture.
