What’s On My Design Wall

There are all sorts of things laying about my area in the midst of mid project. Pictured above are some placemats that I made over the weekend. They still need to be bound. I’m rusty on bias binding, so I’m using the tutorial over at Generations Quilt Patterns. If this goes well, I’ll be willing to tackle the binding on my Double Wedding Ring.

I sure hope 3/4 of a yard will make enough binding – there’s no way I can get any more of that fabric. I suspect I’ll cut this binding will be narrower than my usual 2-1/2″.

I’ve also started marking the cable into one of the borders on Eeyore. I have the sides and bottom to mark then I can start quilting again.

Then it will be time to decide if I’m going to go with straight or bias binding — which I suppose will also depend on how well the first two projects go.

At least I don’t have to worry about not having enough fabric – I have at least 2-1/2 yards left.

Percolating in the back of my mind are the pillowcases I need to make. The one above for a quilt I’ll show towards the end of the year; Eeyore; and a pair for the DWR. I really need to make one for both of my Ladder to the Star quilts, along with labels for all of the above.

A few weeks ago I started working on the backing for the Treadle Scrappy Trips. I want to match the seam, so I’ve started pinning it together.

I need to clean up my cutting table. That pile of fabric in center either needs to either be put up or I need to come closer to finalizing the quilt pattern – given everything on my plate I think putting it up will be my best bet.

Then there are the shirts. Not only do I need to deal with these now that they’ve been washed, the box standing on end under the cutting table contained washed shirts too. Looking at that pile and knowing it doesn’t take that many shirts to kill a stash report kept me from the thrift shops yesterday.

Finally, there’s the snowmen family block from the Christmas BOM. This is one of the two blocks I have left to finish before I can finish assembling the center of the quilt top. The pattern called for appliquéd arms, pipe and nose and I decided they could be embroidered. Since I had finished the quilting on the DWR before Stitch & Chat, this is what I worked on. It’s gone back into the busy bag for another time.

I need to just work on this one bite at a time so I don’t stall trying to figure out what to do first. Stay tuned to see what I get done this week.

What’s On My Design Wall

This weekend I finished quilting the grid “behind” the applique. Now it’s time to figure out the borders. While ~~debating~~ ignoring that question I did a bit more on the DWR. I also spent a good bit of time re-reading (again) Drums of Autumn.

What’s On My Design Wall

I can’t show much this week. I’m still working on the forgotten quilt. I spent 6 hours Saturday quilting — a combination of a pantograph and custom quilting. Now I’m tidying things up. I ran out of bobbin thread and the 1st CD finished of the book I’m listening to, so I decided it’s time to quit for the night.

What’s On My Design Wall

I thought I would never get this quilt backing done. For three days I cut 2-1/2″ strips from my stash of music fabric. While I was at it I also cut 5″ charms.

Then I sewed them end to end, occasionally throwing in mitered seam if I was joining two longer pieces together. When I got through this pile I only had 3318″, but it wasn’t enough. So, I cut more strips and charms. In the end I had approximately 4500″.

It took me 3 hours to get that first seam sewn. The second seam took at least 2 – I only kind of timed it. They really did get faster then – the last 4 seams only took 1-1/2 hours — not including time to press each seam after stitching. Having made a jelly roll quilt w/o pressing and one w/pressing, I think it came out much better having pressed the seams.

The piece currently measures 70″ x 128″ — way longer than I need but I wanted 68″ in width without having to put a border on it. The excess length will become the starting point of another quilt which I will call “Accidental”.

Oh — and my music stash? It’s 8 yards smaller now. Admittedly the two drawers weren’t stuffed when I started but they both were “full”.

What’s On My Design Wall

After stalling for 2 years, I can see the end. I’m still working on the satin stitching around the letters and I think I’m going to go back over Piglet with a dark pink. Then the borders. The current plan is a 2″ black border (tone on tone with music motifs), a 3″ dark purple border and a final 5″ black border. I’m going to bind the quilt in the same fabric as the letters.

Given that this is all applique and I’m going to quilt it on my DSM, there won’t be much variation in my posts this week.

What’s On My Design Wall

This morning I have two things to show. First up is Ladder to the Stars 2 – aka Deadline II. This is the quilt I made back in October to test my pattern which was published yesterday in The Quilt Pattern Magazine. Not only was I testing the pattern, I was also testing my quilting design. It was an epic fail, so I backed up and punted to get the original Ladder to the Stars quilted.

A very good friend ripped out all of the quilting for me and then I spent the last part of the week quilting this on my sewing machine. Curves in the sashing and straight lines in the blocks and setting triangles. The border has a diamond cable. I used bleached Warm and Natural batting and the thread – top & bottom – is — ~~well shoot. I’ve lost the label — I’ve used it before so I’ll dig through the blog and find the information and add it to this post later.~~ cairo-quilt 100% cotton in Honey Gold.

After washing the quilt finished at 57″ x 68″.

This quilt is on several of my UFO goal lists for the year, including the 2014 Finish Along sponsored by The Littlest Thistle. I’ll update the link when I link up.

In addition to finishing the quilt, I worked on my Jared Takes a Wife blocks. Two more seams on each block to go.

What’s On My Design Wall

First off, I finished the quilting and binding on this quilt for Sydney. She pieced the top. It measures about 51″ square. I think she’s giving it to her cousin.

As for my own quilts…

All the green star points have been sewn, so into pairs and then I can start piecing the blocks.

I cut the squares for the replacement 4-patches for this UFO. The original 4-patches are bright white and the blocks are off white/cream. I’ve got 6 different light fabrics to use in the border. These are going to be my leader/enders at the retreat this weekend.

My projects are packed – Orca Bay (Bonnie Hunter, String Fling) is in the box — ooh I need to go find my Flying Geese Ruler for “squaring” the geese and put them in the box with the rest of the rulers I’m taking with me (12-1/2″ square, 6″ x 12″, Easy Angle and Companion Angle).

Under the box is the box with Jared Takes a Wife and the zipper bag with Candy Sunflower Seeds (The Chain Event by Dorothy Young). In the flat zip bag is the fabric and instructions for my “August C” done in black and batiks.

The plan for today is to make progress on Eeyore. I’d really like to have the applique done by before I go to the retreat. We’ll see if that happens.

What’s On My Design Wall

After finishing up the Irish Chain quilt I needed to figure out what to work on. I pulled out Orca Bay, thinking I was ready to attach the black and white corner pieces to the purple string triangles — only I found that the paper had not been removed from the triangles yet. I did that and then got maybe 20 “geese” built when I decided I really needed a leader/ender project.

So, I pulled out Jared Takes a Wife, cut the pink squares and green star points and the green star points will be my leader/enders. Since I had the fabric cut I went ahead and made one block up.

Finally on Saturday, I quilted Sydney’s quilt for Samantha. It still needs trimming and binding something to get done this week.

Friday night & Saturday morning I quilted my Scrappy Irish Chain. I’m still attaching the binding to the quilt. I can’t wait to wash this and see how it crinkles up.

What’s On My Design Wall

Actually, the music baby quilt is finished and delivered. I’ve called it Lullaby for Chloe, as this was a gift for the high school orchestra director’s newborn daughter Chloe.

The center went together quite quickly as did the final borders and quilting once I got the embroidery done.

The batting is Warm and Natural. The quilting thread is cairo-quilt 100% cotton in Honey Gold. I quilted it on my DSM. Straight stitching through the chain, stitch in the ditch around the border, echoing of the top, bottom and middle staff line in the border and then an eighth-note in the background. (Click on the pictures to see the detail.)

The backing is a piece of baby animal music fabric I bought back when I made Ted’s music quilt. It wasn’t quite wide enough so I added a strip of gold to either side.
