The Year of the PIG – Question #4

Jill’s Year of the PIGS Question #4 is:

What is your last finish and what UFO are you working on now?

As Jill said, this is an easy question.  My last finish was my 5-patch Scrap baby quilt on January 31st.

I’m working on two different UFOs at the moment.  At the sewing machine I’m working on a brightly colored Dresden Plate on a black background.

I started this quilt sometime in 2006.  I’m using a skirt my mom made for me in the early ’90s.  One of these days I’ll need to see if I can find a picture of it before I started chopping into it.  This is what is left of the skirt.

There were at least two more tiers to the skirt.  I had to cut into another layer to get enough pieces.

I wore that skirt frequently for 10 years (clearly I’m not a clothes horse.)  I always wanted a black blouse and black slouch boots to wear with it.  But never got the blouse made or found the boots.  Instead I wore it with a purple “camp shirt” and some sort of black shoes.  For accessories I had a “silver” concho belt and a multi-colored turquoise phoenix brooch.  I finally rolled over the hem of the skirt with my desk chair one time too many and decided I shouldn’t wear it any more.

When I’m not sitting in front of my sewing machine, I’m hand quilting my Double Wedding Ring Quilt.

Last night I discovered that I only have 2 rings left on the row I’m currently working on, then two more rows for a total of 16 rings to go.  I’ve blogged a lot about this quilt over the past couple of year.  Clicking on “dwr” on the right of my screen take you to those entries.

Check out the link’s at Jill’s to the last finish others have had and what they are currently working on now.

January UFO Challenge Met – Part 3

It happened!  I finished two UFOs this month.  This baby quilt (about 38″ square) was quick to quilt — once I figured out how I was going to quilt it.    The backing is a piece of fabric left over from a dress I made 4 or 5 years ago.

The binding was made when I finished the quilt top last August so, I’ll only get to count the backing at the next Stash Report.

Since  February is a short month, and I still have to my “regular quilting” to do, I hope Judy calls a low number.  My “regular quilting” for February will consist of resuming the hand quilting on my DWR, and piecing mini-stars for the miniature quilt I’m working on.

What’s on My Design Wall

This is UFO #6 off the second list.  Yes, I might just finish 2 UFOs this month.  The binding is on and I just need to stitch it down — then decide if I need to go back and quilt the around the outside edge (I’m thinking yes.)  I even have the quilt labeled.

Follow the links over at Patchwork Times to check out other design walls.

And check back this evening to see if I finish the quilt before midnight!

January UFO Challenge

Judy has drawn # 6.

That means this month I’ll be either get my Charm Challenge into a top

or quilt my Scrappy 5-Patch.

Now for a bit of history on these two quilts.

For several years, my LQS, Heritage Fine Fabrics, issues a Charm Pack Challenge.  The rules are pretty simple.  Create a quilted object containing  a recognizable piece of every charm in the package.  In 2008 I  think the charm pack was a Three Sisters line.  I decided to make 9-patches using the ‘quick pieced’ method where you start off with two squares of fabric and end up with 2 9-patches.    I hadn’t thought past that point, and when I didn’t finish the 9-patches and the contest deadline passed, the pieces were set aside.

The Scrapy 5-Patch is a quilt top I completed in 2009.  It just needs quilting.  The backing and binding are folded up with the quilt top and I’m sure there’s a piece of batting big enough in my batting box (or I can piece one together).  I  just have to decide how I’m going to quilt it.  That’s where I frequently get stuck – although generally, I don’t get as far as making the binding and having the backing ready.

My brother and sister and their families are coming to dinner tomorrow, so I won’t get much quilting done this weekend.  Good thing I  have Monday off!

Good luck to all of the participants in this challenge.  I’m sure we’ll finish lots of quilts by the end of the year.
