40 Day Challenge – Day 19

It’s day 19 and have finished all but 1 of the Star Studded blocks I have in my possession.  I’m not fond of paper piecing, but I’m even less fond of hand stitching and applique which is what the next block includes.  I’ve finished 7 12-inch blocks which is what I started with at the beginning of the challenge, but I suppose I really need to do that 10th block before I mark this as complete.

Today during the Facebook Live event Stitch-On Needlework did, they showed this pattern. I’m not sure what it is that I like about it.  My original plan was to go swing by and pick it up this weekend, but my sister was on her way to the shop and offered to bring it to me. That saved me money, not only for the gas, but for whatever I would have ended up buying while in the shop.  I still have 2 patterns and the fabric to make a quilt and a wall hanging that I bought last summer that I haven’t even started.  Perhaps that will be my next challenge.

Up next really needs to be the binding on the log cabin quilt. My sister is coming over this weekend to use the longarm and while she’s here she wants to use my sewing machine to attach the binding to the 4 quilts she’s quilting since she can’t find the walking foot for her machine.  That means binding needs to occur before Friday.  While she’s here, if the weather is good I hope to get pictures of some of the quilts and I guess I’ll spend the weekend working on Frolic and assorted pillowcases.

40 Day Challenge – Day 17

I didn’t get a report out for Day 16, not having completed any of the 6 inch blocks I’ve been working on.  The only other thing of interest is the label for the log cabin quilt came in.  I guess its time to get it bound.

Day 17 had me finishing the last of the 6 inch blocks. I looked at the clock when I got up to press the seams and it was right at midnight. So, given that I picked up the kit for this month’s block, I now have 6 blocks to piece to get caught up.  2  with tricky piecing, 3 paper pieced and 1 English Paper Pieced block.

40 Day Challenge – Day 15

Today, I worked late, ran by the library to pick up a book, then picked up dinner. Following that was the guild  Zoom board meeting. Figured out why I was sweating by the end of the meeting.  I’m calling an AC guy in the morning. Needless to say I have not gone into the sewing room.

So, nothing is crossed off the list today.

40 Day Challenge – Day 14

These 6 inch blocks I’m making just don’t come together quickly.  There are 13 pieces in that 3″ square.  The good news is that I got these right the first time. Let’s hope the rest of the block and the second set, which I also cut today go together as well.

So, nothing is crossed off the list today.

40 Day Challenge – Day 13

Day 13 – I finished up the 2nd set of 6-inch blocks, then decided I wanted to make some pillowcases so when I wash the quilts I can wash the cases. I’ll put the clean quilt in their respective case then in the closet since my quilt cabinet is full.

First is On Ringo Lake. There are a few extra seams in this case as I only had a 20-ish by 108″ piece of backing, a FQ of the brown and maybe a 36″ x 14″ piece of the cuff material. But I made it work.

Good Fortune is the quilt I bought the butterfly backing for but when I saw this fabric I knew it had to be the backing.  Apparently I bought enough of it for two pillowcases, but failed to get enough of the pink. I was out of town when I bought the fabric, I ordered additional pink fabric and either the name on my original receipt was wrong, I ordered the wrong pink or I was sent the wrong pink. I didn’t discover that until tonight, so there is just one pillowcase. It only has 1 extra seam as apparently I started using the accent fabric as a neutral in my Frolic.

The orange blue in the lower right corner is Sherbert. She decided she had to be right where I was taking pictures.

Here’s the current status:

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020

40 Day Challenge – Day 12

Day 12 of the challenge was slow.  I recently mentioned that back in April when I had time off from work I couldn’t get anything done, but didn’t have the same issue when I had time off in May.  I thought the difference was because in April Kansas City was under stay at home orders. Well I think that happened last night as well.  I’ve been told to self-quarantine until the test results come back on a person I was in contact with Friday. I just couldn’t get motivated. Hopefully the results will be back and it’s just a nasty flu instead of Covid-19.

I did however assemble into rows the next 6 6-inch blocks from the BOM, so progress on my lengthy list was made.

I bought the butterfly backing to use on the back of my Good Fortune quilt, but didn’t use it and thought it was perfect to use on the log cabin quilt. As noted a couple of days ago I have less than 5″ of the backing left. I thought I’d see if I could find more of the fabric to purchase for pillowcases. I had 2 options– 45″ wide or wide backing. I opted for a yard of the backing as it’s was about $5 less and I got more fabric.  Ordered Saturday morning, it was in Monday’s mail.

The first thing I noticed was the texture. It’s didn’t feel quite the same, but nothing to be concerned about. It was only when I physically compared the two fabrics that I noticed something odd.

The first thing I notices was the color.  The new fabric the background is more yellow, then I noticed the direction of the butterflies.  In the picture above I have the pattern lined up in the same direction. It seems the new fabric the butterflies go across the width of the fabric and on the original fabric they go the length of the fabric. Neither of these issues will prevent me from using the fabric for the pillowcases, but it is a reminder to make sure I get enough fabric the first time.

No change on my list.

40 Day Challenge – Day 11

Since my primary goal of the challenge has been met, I’m on to the next goal. Catching up on the BOM.  There are 24 6-inch blocks in this quilt, with each block containing 28 pieces — 13 of which make up the center 3-inch square.  I started off the day cutting the pieces for all 6 of the blocks in this colorway. The tiny 1″ square in a square went together nicely, then I put on the next ring.  Let’s just say one of these 6 units does not look like the others and unfortunately it was the one that was correct.

I mistakenly put the blue triangles on first. Given the block I was making I couldn’t just leave it, so there was a bit of ripping and cutting of new blue triangles.  Once the center units of my blocks were complete, I went on to small flying geese.

Having gotten tired of messing with tiny blocks, I pulled out the next two 12-inch blocks.  They felt huge.

After looking at the remaining 12-inch blocks I have in my possession, I called it a day. Two of them are paper pieced (foundation) and I need to make copies of the blocks, but my printer is not cooperating, one has “hundreds” of English Paper Pieced diamonds in it – actually it’s only 53, but not a quick piece, and two of them have some tricky piecing that requires concentration.

I think my goal for tomorrow will be to finish the 2nd set of 6-inch blocks and one of the ‘tricky’ 12-inch blocks and perhaps a pillowcase.

40 Day Challenge Day 10

The PANTS ARE HEMMED!

Yes, the pants, which had me in a panic have been hemmed.  I can only hope that they are not too short.  But if they are, since they are cuffed, it will be possible to length them.

Saturday morning, before I started working on the pants, I loaded up the log cabin quilt. I knew the backing was going to be close, so I added a leader to both the top and the bottom of the backing. There’s about 1″ of backing at the top of the quilt and this is all that is left at the bottom of the quilt. I’ve ordered more of this fabric to make pillowcases.

Once the pants were finished, I pulled out my BOM.  Or more accurately Blocks of the Month. I’m working on Star Studded through the LQS. So far I have in my possession fabric for 9 of 12 12-inch blocks and all 24 6-inch blocks.  I think June is the 9th month, so I’m just a bit behind having only completed 2 of the 12-inch blocks and 1 of the 6-inch blocked before today. There is a quilt guild board meeting the same evening this week as the BOM class, so it will be Saturday before I pick up this month’s block(s). I’ve updated the count in my list to reflect the correct block count as of today.

I have no idea what, if anything I’ll work on tomorrow. But here’s the updated list.

40 Day Challenge Day 9

Yesterday my sister came over to quilt a baby quilt, so I had to clear off the quilting machine, again. Although I don’t think I’ll leave the leaf of my sewing table up on a regular basis, it did prove to be a great place to stack the various projects I have going. From the front to the back. On the bottom of the first pile is Allietare. On top of it is the binding fabric, the baby/doll quilt to bind and fabric for the bonus pillowcases. The middle pile is the quit which I need to label and the logcabin quilt. Leaning against the last pile is my Star Studded BOM. The last pile are quilts which need to be washed and photographed. Next to the sewing machine is pair #6 of the pants which need to be hemmed.

I only got one pair of pants hemmed yesterday. I got a bit distracted.

Acrylic Pour videos have been popping up on my Facebook timeline. I saw one by Mixed Media Girl where she used supplies from the Dollar Store  and thought that would be an inexpensive way to try out the technique. This is my first attempt.

Today after I run to Fedex to ship a package, I’m going to do my best to finish the hemming so I can cross it off my list.  I may load the log cabin quilt and while it’s quilting I think I’ll work on the BOM. It would be nice if I had a few more blocks done before I picked up this month’s kit.

  • A customer’s quilt – binding needs to be pressed, then can be attached and stitched down 6/6/2020
  • Allietaire – plan do do both scallops and a 2 color binding.

40 Day Challenge – Day 8

Narragansett Blues is complete. As soon as I wash it, I’ll take it out to hang on the line for it’s official portrait and do a complete post on the quilt.

Nothing else was done on the list. My sister was given the OK to travel so she’s coming over in the morning to use the quilting machine. I’ve got to clear it off.  At least this time it’s quilting related stuff and not household goods.
