What’s On My Design Wall

dw1103

This weekend I was on call for work, so while I was waiting I finished up a few more blocks for the Batik quilt. I have 21 more blocks to finish then it will be time to start arranging them.  Right now I’m just tossing them up on the wall as I finish them.

I’m also up-to-date on my Star-A-Day blocks. I need to get busy and trace the templates. I only have stars traced to get me through Thursday and 3 of them are not cut out.  The section I’m working on now will have 32 stars in it.

Finally, I’ve rounded the 3rd corner on my DWR. The chart is updated on my sidebar.

At first glance it doesn’t look like anything on my design wall has changed.  But there are more stars on the wall.  I’ve been keeping up with them.  Now that the scraps and magazines are gone through, it’s on to cleaning up the sewing room. I’ve taken 2 steps already.

Yesterday afternoon I  helped a friend baste her king size quilt. We decided the backing really needed pressing, so I had to clear the ironing board off. Some of the stuff ended up on the cutting table, the scraps I had been digging through ended up in a scrap bin, but the large stuff got put away appropriately. The 2nd thing I did was put away the piles of fabric I had pulled out for the Grand Illusion Mystery. I haven’t given up on doing the mystery, I simply need to clear the decks to get a few other things done first.

This week I’ve rearranged the batik blocks to get the stars up on the wall. I have two more stars made which are not pictured, so I’m still on track.

Surprisingly, the Star-A-Day quilt has been taking a big chunk of my time. But hopefully I’m good to go as I’ve prepped the stars for the rest of the month.

The last week of September,  I pulled fabric for the October stars.

Staroctfab

I stacked it all in my star box and couldn’t lift the box with one hand. So, I decided to further refine each kit. Last night I finished kiting up the October stars.

The pieces are traced and cut out, including the setting square.  I’ll explain those tiny squares in a minute.

They are then stacked up on the setting square.

I fold the setting square over to contain the pieces.

And stuff it into a business envelope which I’ve created 3 pockets by stitching through.

I did this for all of the sets which I’ve not stitched and filled 7 envelopes  for 21 prepped stars.

I’ve put two envelopes, a few pins, a couple of needles, thread, scissors, a pen and a glue stick into a pencil bag. It takes up much less space on my side table than the star box. The rest of the envelopes are in the star box in the sewing room.

So, why do I need those 3 tiny squares, a glue stick and pen? I’m keeping a journal of my quilt progress.

Now that the stars are under control (at least until the end of the month) maybe I can work on a second project — but will it be the batik quilt or one of the Craigslist projects? I’ll tell about those tomorrow.

What’s On My Design Wall

My Star-A-Day project is on the wall today.  I’ve been pushing myself to get ‘caught up’ on the stars and last night I finished the 28th star and I was able to assemble the section.  Spending so much time on this quilt to get it going has meant I’ve not worked on anything else. Now that I’ve I’m only working on a single star a day and it has ‘clicked’ and a star is not taking me 2 hours to make, I should have time to work on my other projects. But first I’ll select the fabrics for the next two weeks of stars.

16 of the 3″ (finished) stars.  I’m considering the fabric I have them laying on as my setting fabric. I only bought a FQ over the weekend since I wasn’t certain about it, but I think it plays nicely with the star backgrounds I’ve used so far.

Over the weekend I traced off enough stars for the rest of the month. Now if I can come to some sort of balance between piecing a star and working at the machine.  Maybe if I had a book to listen to…

And then there were six.  These are the first of 365 3″ finished LeMoyne stars I need for the Star-a-Day quilt by Karen Styles.

The idea is to stitch one star a day and at the end of the year you’ll have enough stars to make an 81″ x 81″ quilt.  The designer recommends that the quilt be assembled in sections as you go along so you don’t end up with a pile of stars at the end of the year.  I need a few more stars before I try to assemble my first section.

As for piecing them one a day, I can see an advantage to that – I did three last night and I can feel it in my wrist.  Given that I need to also be working on the DWR binding, I need to pace myself.

As for the DWR, I need to get it back to the sewing machine.  There’s a section which I need to re-stitch. It won’t take long, but it does require swapping the pressure foot on the machine and changing thread. I guess I’ll do that after work today.  That is after I stitch a few more of these blocks.  There are six laying on my sewing table ready for me to stitch the 2nd strip to them and a whole stack that need both strips.

At the moment, my design wall is empty. I’ve started sewing strips to the double square in a rectangle pieces.  Haven’t gotten very far.

On the other hand, I  have the binding on 7-1/2 arcs stitched down.  It’s beginning to look like a finished quilt. Only 22-1/2 arcs of binding to go.

I really hoped that I would be able to show that the binding was attached to the DWR and I was stitching it down.  But instead of working on the DWR last night I spent the evening assembling a grill — and it’s not done either!

True, I could have bought the grill already assembled, but then I wouldn’t have been able to get it home. Needless to say, if I don’t get it into gear today, we won’t be grilling tonight either.

But back to the DWR.  Part of my hesitation on the binding was deciding how wide to cut the binding, determining how much binding I needed and then deciding if I had enough fabric left. There’s no getting more of this fabric — I bought it in September or October of 1989.

Well, the good news is I had a yard. Ok, I’ve got enough fabric.  Next I measured around the edge of the rings: 13-1/2″.  30 rings – 405″+ need extra for seams.

I then pulled a piece of the leftover binding from the placemats to check the width. I basted it to the quilt and decided with width was good.  That means I need 2-1/4″ binding.

According to to the chart over at Generations Quilt Patterns 3/4 yards of 40″ wide fabric (after selvedges are removed) will yield 449″ of binding which should be more than enough — especially since I have 43″ of usable width.

After I finish the grill, I’ll resume working on the binding for the DWR. 25 years is long enough for a quilt to be a UFO.

This week it’s batiks.  First up is a quilt that I just need to finish stitching the binding on.  I made the top back in 2012 – started it in a class. The pattern is Abbey Memories from Turning Twenty book #8 – Stained Glass and Scraps. I quilted it Friday morning and took it to the quilt retreat to work on.  The batiks are from Connecting Threads and I’m 99% certain the “leading” and binding is Kona Cotton.

After finishing the pillowcase and tacking down the label on Eeyore, I primarily worked on this batik project. All of these batiks also came from Connecting Threads.  I need to press the last corner down then sew on a bright colored strip to either side of the block so far before I can start assembling them into a top.  Right now this quilt is called “August C – Batik” a cheat sheet for the block can be found HERE.

So, what’s up for the rest of the week?  Finish the binding on Abbey Memories, make and attach the binding to the DWR and make the Alphabet BOM “T” block.  Then I’ll go back to work on the new quilt.

What’s On My Design Wall

This week I’ve got 4 things going on — all of which MUST be done by Friday morning.

First up finish binding Eeyore.  I’ve got about a foot of the binding attached to the front of the quilt.

dw0818 eeyore

Next, cut this pile of fabrics into 320 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ bricks for Syd to use in her new quilt — neither of us are quite ready for her to use the rotary cutter.

dw0818 syd

Then I need to finish cutting this pile of FQs and yardage for the quilt I plan on working on this weekend.

Finally I need to get this top and the backing on the zippers. I have a date with the longarm Friday morning.

I don’t know if my quilting mojo is back, but all of this stuff simply has to be done.
