What’s On My Design Wall

After finishing up the Irish Chain quilt I needed to figure out what to work on.  I pulled out Orca Bay, thinking I was ready to attach the black and white corner pieces to the purple string triangles — only I found that the paper had not been removed from the triangles yet.  I did that and then got maybe 20 “geese” built when I decided I really needed a leader/ender project.

So, I pulled out Jared Takes a Wife, cut the pink squares and green star points and the green star points will be my leader/enders. Since I had the fabric cut I went ahead and made one block up.

Finally on Saturday, I quilted Sydney’s quilt for Samantha.  It still needs trimming and binding something to get done this week.

Friday night & Saturday morning I quilted my Scrappy Irish Chain.  I’m still attaching the binding to the quilt. I can’t wait to wash this and see how it crinkles up.

Actually, the music baby quilt is finished and delivered.  I’ve called it Lullaby for Chloe, as this was a gift for the high school orchestra director’s newborn daughter Chloe.

The center went together quite quickly as did the final borders and quilting once I got the embroidery done.

The batting is Warm and Natural. The quilting thread is cairo-quilt 100% cotton in Honey Gold. I quilted it on my DSM. Straight stitching through the chain, stitch in the ditch around the border, echoing of the top, bottom and middle staff line in the border and then an eighth-note in the background. (Click on the pictures to see the detail.)

The backing is a piece of baby animal music fabric I bought back when I made Ted’s music quilt. It wasn’t quite wide enough so I added a strip of gold to either side.

Next up – prepping the backing for two quilts I’m quilting Friday and Saturday.

I stayed up too late to finish the embroidery on  the 4th last border. Now final decisions need to be made on how I’m going to finish it so I can start quilting.

There’s all sorts of stuff going on in my sewing area. Eeyore is still hanging there — well Piglet is. Eeyore is still to be done. The baby quilt is still in process, but no additional work has been done since I finished the embroidery on the second border.  That’s Sydney’s red, black and white rail fence on the right. The backing fabric is laying over the DWR on the left.

So why haven’t I done more?  Saturday I ran to Jo-Ann’s to pick up a spool of thread to bind this quilt for a friend.

binding

I  had a 40% and a 50% coupon, so I wandered around the store looking for something to buy – not really something I normally do.  I end up using coupons on the two spools of thread – the green for the binding and a gray for piecing. Additionally I picked up another skein of black embroidery thread for the baby quilt and this:

dw0421 punch

This is a the X-Large Fiskars Hexagon punch.  It measures 1″ across each edge. Needless to say, there is a not a junk mail card that hasn’t been punched.  While I was at it, I cut a ton of hexagons from 2 1/2″ strips and put together a busy bag.

dw0421 bag

This bag was given to me a few years ago.  Previously I had sewing/quilting notions in it, but then migrated to other solutions. It’s perfect for what I need now.

dw0421 bag1

Left to right: the punched cards and a small bag of paper clips; cut hexagons; basted hexagons and a few clipped to cards.  The next page is has a whole stack of neutral hexagons on one side of the page and the black embroidery thread for the baby quilt on the other side of the page. That’s where I’ll put the the next two borders once I get them traced off.

dw0421 bag2

I have a few hexagons stitched together — I really need to nail down the pattern before I go too much further. On the right is a panel of Winter Wonderland – a long term project that I’ve been working on.

dw0421 bag3

I also have the hexagon template in that sleeve – which I will probably pull out.  In the next to last pocket just shoved willy nilly is the thread for the hexagons and the red work, scissors, nail file, needles, pens and who knows what else. The last pocket has the next to last block for the Christmas BOM and thread plus those applique flowers I did a couple of months ago.

Since everything is together it will be easy to grab and go. I don’t even have to worry about getting bored working on just one project – there’s 4 in this bag.

Friday night was Stitch & Chat at the LQS. Normally I would take my DWR, but I am in desperate need of finishing the baby quilt.  I wonder how many notes I can stitch this evening?

It’s been such a long time since I’ve done any sewing beyond piecing quilts, that it took me a week to figure out how to hem a prom dress.  It needed a narrow hem – easy enough – but I couldn’t use heat on the material, so it was a challenge.  Finally ended up using a super fine machine embroidery bobbin thread in the top and bottom to stitch each fold in place and then a slightly heavier thread for the final stitching.

After the dress, I decided to work on my Jared Takes A Wife top.  I stitched all of the star points and now I can’t do anything else until I cut more fabric. The green is going to be the sashing and the inner star points. There will be a narrow pink border between the sashing and the outer paisley border.

Before I do any more on JTAW, I’m going to finish the music baby quilt.

After finishing the embroidery on first border, I discovered that I didn’t get it centered. I’m considering this border treatment. Although the embroidery, which looks good by itself nearly fades away when put next to the quilt. So who knows what I’ll really do.

There is a lot going on these days. Just barely showing behind the black & gold is Eeyore, pinned up so I can work on the black & gold quilt. I still need to finish the borders and then it will be on to the quilting.  I have a cool idea for the quilting in the border (which my husband loves) so I hope I can pull it off. That bit of cream on the right is from the 2 color binding.

The baby’s parents are musicians, so isn’t this the perfect fabric for the backing?

dw0317-backing

I’m going to have to do some piecing as I only have a 2 yard piece and there is a 10″ and a 5″ square cut out of it. I really like the gold with it and I bought more than I needed, so maybe there’s enough.

dw0317leader

While I was piecing the quilt, I managed to make 40 + 4-patches for my Jared Takes A Wife.  For the record, they were already paired up into 2-patches.  I think I have 10 more left to make.

JTAW-fabrics

I’m still cutting fabrics, but that’s OK. My goal is to finish it by the end of April.

I’d love to say this is on my design wall, but I seem to be in a slump – that happens when I finish up a project, and in the last month I’ve finished 3 quilts. I’ve been doing a bit of reading and I have finished the shawl. I’m ready to do some more quilting. I would have raced to the LQS Saturday to buy fabric for this quilt if I hadn’t decided I needed more sleep.

It’s small 44″ square and I know I don’t have any gold fabric in my stash and don’t think I want to make it scrappy. Very unlike me. On the other hand, this is what I’m planning for the backing:

blackgoldback

Cut 10″ squares.

So, on Saturday as I head out to a few LQS with my friend, I now know what I’m looking for.  I do so much better when I have a plan.

As for my slump, it’s time to pull Eeyore out of the box. Perhaps after I get off work this afternoon.
