My Latest Finishes

Right up until I messed my knee up, I was finishing projects left and right.  Up first is  Dragonflies Dancing on Glenwood Avenue.  The layout is my own design.  The blocks are call Glenwood Avenue. It was the retreat swap block in 2008. I used Legacy 80/20 batting,  4o wt Glide thread in Magic Mint and the the E2E design Dragonfly Dance. After washing it measures 62″ x 82 1/2″. It will be donated to the Mississiippi State Veteran’s Home. Started 4/20/2008 – Finished 5/21/22.

This is Johnny’s Strip Twist.  Strip Twist is available HERE. I started this quilt 5/13/2016 and finished it 5/25/2022.  It measures 101 x 103.  Legacy 80/20 batting, 40wt Glide in Pistachio. The E2E pattern is Espalier.   This quilt is on my Brandon Quilter’s UFO list.

Shimmer – The 3rd quilt from the FQ Bundle + 10 FQs. For now I’m keeping this one.  Washed, it measures 64 x 79.  I used 40 wt Glide in Magic Mint, Legacy 80/20 batting and the E2E pattern Espallier. I started this quilt 8/24/2020 and finished it 5/22/2022.

Roman Holiday never made it to the UFO status.  I started it at the retreat last month (4/21/22) and finished it on 5/28/22.  The pattern is from Quick as a Wink 3 yard quilts.  Shoot, I have no notes on the quilt, so I’ll have to look it up after a bit.

I’ve made some kitchen accessories.  An applique towel and the Staci Kitchen Scarf.  I’m on the lookout for matching towel as I have enough fabric for a second towel. These were made Saturday.

The Tinzley Table Runner was a quick finish as well. I’m going to use this on my tea cart in the living room.

A Quilting Challenge – Really?!!

I’m living in a house which has NO room completed, so naturally, I’m going to participate in my quilt guild’s UFO Challenge.  I’ve picked 12 quilts which need to be completed and shown by December 5th, 2022.

1- Hand Quilted White Work. This is my oldest quilt “top” from sometime in 2005.  I took a hand quilting class in preparation to quilt my DWR.

2 – QIAD Green & Cream Swap from the fall of 2006. It’s my 3rd oldest UFO.

3 – Johnny’s Strip Twist.  I started this at a quilt retreat in 2016. I had problems with my 1/4″ seam, so started over. I have enough sections to make at least 2 quilts.

4 – Pink & Black Auction Crazy Strings. I bought the blocks at an auction in 2018. This will be the 3rd quilt I’ve made from them. I pulled the fabrics when I thought I was going to a Sit-n-Sew in December so I’m counting it.

5 – Christmas Wall Hanging. My SIL and I purchased the fabric for this quilt at the same time — July 2018.  Hers is finished, I have part of 1 block done.

6 – Frolic the 2019 Quiltville Mystery Quilt. This looks like it just needs to be quilted.  But I need to make the backing bigger, so I’ll be making more blocks.

7 – Baubles ‘N Beads – I made this top in August 2020 and just need to quilt it.

8 – Shimmer – I’m using the leftover fabric from Bauble ‘N Beads and Atomic Starburst to make this quilt. I started it  August 2020.

9 – Atomic Starburst – the top was completed in March 2021, which is why it’s listed after Shimmer.

10 – MQA BOM – I finished the quilt top the end of September 2021 – so it is possible to piece with the house torn apart.

11 – Ruby’s Sampler – I started this the New Year’s Eve 2020. I still need to write up the patterns for the blocks and of course finish making the top.  I need to make 4 more blocks.

12 – SQG BOM – The first block came out February 2021. I made 3 blocks before I stopped sewing last year to start packing.  I didn’t get a picture of the 3rd block.

In addition to the above I’m participating in a Pizza Box Challenge – one block a month with one of my guilds & I’m considering a mystery quilt with the other guild.  The retreat usually has a lotto block – I’ll try to make one; a swap block – I’ll probably skip this time; and a mystery quilt – which I may not do either.

My goal is to not start anything new, but now that I think about it, there’s a pot holder and possibly a sweatshirt jacket in my future.

I Jinxed Myself

Yes, after bragging about having 4 correct corners yesterday I proceeded to turn one the wrong way when I sewed the block together.  Fortunately with just ripping out a couple of seams I was able to turn the unit and finished the block correctly.

I then went on to make 2 more blocks bringing my total of correctly made blocks to 23.  I also made 2 more Easy Breezy blocks.

Looks like I’ve hit a milestone with my 350 Challenge — 200 blocks

  • 350 Challenge April = 18
  • 350 Challenge Cumulative = 200
  • Easy Breezy = 142

Correct Corners

Since I’ve started going back to the gym, I’m only gone for a little over an hour, but it sure has eaten into my quilting time.  That’s because I’m still wiped out. It was a little better Monday (day 3), not that I have a finished blocks to show for it.  I do however have correctly made corner units.

I rooted around in my yardage and decided the second Easy Breezy quilt will be red.  Both quilts will have the pink floral as the backing. I haven’t decided if I’m going to try and load them both at the same time or not.  Either way, I plan on using “Leather” as my thread color.

I have the 4 extra Easy Breezy blocks cut to use as my leader/ender for a little bit longer. My postage stamp quilt is my backup L/E.  I’ve been working on it since the Spring of 2011.

I have 25 blocks made (in the bag) and enough quarter units for 10 more blocks.

Design Wall Monday – 4/5/21

Since this past July, I’ve made 140 Easy Breezy blocks – the Quiltville Leader/Ender project for 2020-2021. Yesterday afternoon, I decided I’d make two smaller quilts and found this caramel colored fabric in my stash. The first top is complete. I’ll try to get it loaded on the frame later this week.

As for the second quilt, I have a slightly lighter colored fabric, but I think I may dig deeper. Since I decided to make 2 quilts, I need to make 4 more Easy Breezy blocks.

As for Shimmer.  I may have to break down and buy more fabric.

Yes, I messed up again!  This goes to show you shouldn’t sew when you are tired.  The good news(?) is these 2 messed units are the same blue that is in the other messed up block, and I’ve found at least 3 shops online with the fabric in stock.  Given I only need 1/4 yard of the fabric, I think I’m going to wait to order it after I get the rest of the blocks made.  I only want to pay for shipping once.

Be sure to stop by Small Quilts & Doll Quilts to see what others are working on.

Still Shimmering

The day started bright and early with me at the gym before 9 AM.  When I got home I made 3 more blocks, took a nap and completed one more and started a 5th block.

If I remember correctly, it took about 2 weeks to get to the point where I wasn’t dead after each gym workout. So, maybe by mid-April I’ll be functioning again.

  • 350 Challenge April = 13
  • 350 Challenge Cumulative = 195
  • Easy Breezy = 140

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

It’s a new month and already I’ve touched 5 different projects.

First up is Shimmer.  3 more blocks.  That makes 16 made correctly.  Given that my design wall is not big enough for all of them, I pulled down the ones I made last month to make room for the rest of the blocks.

In the middle is this month’s BOM from the Guild.  Now that it’s made, I’m second guessing my choice of this particular orange fabric.  I’ll worry about it after I get the rest of the blocks made.

The next 3 blocks are from the Addicted to Scraps column in Quiltmaker.  The pink one is Dakota Farmer from the November/December 2013 issue.  The pink and white HST were pulled from my orphan block box. They were bonus HST from my Carolina Christmas.  The pink squares came from my box of 2″ squares.  The blue and burgundy block next to it is Four Patch Pinwheel from the January/February 2019 issue. Finally the green/neutral block is Betty’s Choice from March/April 2013.  This brings my total to Addicted to Scrap blocks 15.

The last two blocks on the wall are the last two Easy Breezy leader/ender blocks.  I’ve now made 140.  Since I’m not certain how I plan to set these blocks I’ve pulled out my postage stamp quilt.  I added 10 -15 2 patches to the bag.

  • 350 Challenge April = 9
  • 350 Challenge Cumulative = 191
  • Easy Breezy = 140

Finished (or Not) Friday – 4/2/2021

The April Fools joke was on me.  I went back to the gym for the first time in a year and it wiped me out.  As a result absolutely nothing got done. Of course the trip to Walmart and the grocery store probably didn’t help either.

What you see here is Shimmer, a few of my  Easy Breezy leader/ender blocks, my latest Addicted to Scraps block and the corner of Atomic Starburst.  Perhaps over the weekend I can get Shimmer on down the line and will have figured out how to quilt Atomic Starburst.

Meanwhile, check out the other quilts on AlyciaQuilts Finished (or Not) Friday.

One Monthly Goal – April

Decisions, decisions. What do I pick for my One Monthly Goal, a challenge hosted by Elm Street Quilts. Do  I pick finishing the top to Shimmer…

quilt and bind Atomic Starburst…

or quilt and bind Baubles ‘n Beads?

Yes, there is a theme here — all of the quilts I’ve made with my FQ Bundle of Radiance which I purchased in July 2019.

I think I’ll go with Shimmer.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

As I sat at the other end of the sewing room talking on the phone, I realized that one of these blocks is not like the others. And this time, there is no way to fix it without an extra seam.  Will I? Who knows.  I’ll worry about it another day.  I still have 16 more blocks to make.
