3rd Quarter Units Are Complete

Everything is ready for the 3rd Quarter of the wedding quilt.  The pile of broken dishes on the left are sorted into stack of 4 – 2 seafoam and 2 lavender.  The stack on the right still needs to be stirred.  Each mini stack is the same fabric.  Tonight I’ll finish matching the neutrals to the broken dishes and begin assembling the blocks.  With any luck  I might have the next section ready for Finished (or Not) Friday.

  • Easy Breezy = 96

3rd Quarter Goals

Rhonda's [Quilt] Ramblings
Not daunted by listing out quilting/sewing goals that don’t get finished, here are this quarter’s main goals.
  • Bionic Bagbionic
  • Zipper Bags (at least one – I haven’t decided if I like the other 3 fabrics together.)zipbags
  • The Blue Disappearing 9-Patch — Both the top and backing are made and there’s batting around here somewhere.bluetop
  • Strip Twist – a long shot as it is still in pieces and I have no idea what I’m going to use for the backing.striptwist
  • Cream & Green Swap – This really needs to be done first.andrea-gift
  • Monochromatic Tablerunner – I’m sure there’s something in the stash I can use for the backing.tablerunner

Of course the best laid plans don’t always come to fruition, so I am going to hope if I finish something else it will be one of my numerous UFOs or planned projects listed below:

I probably should have done another picture, but I’ve been having computer issues all week and want to get this posted while I can.

There are a few other things kicking about in the sewing room, but given I can’t find the cutting table or ironing board and haven’t unpacked from the retreat back in early June, I’m not likely to finish those either.

See what others are planning on working on this quarter over at RhondasRamblings.

Edited 7/16/16 4:00 PM — Since I’ve posted this, and the deadline to post our list has not past, I’ve rounded up pictures of the rest of the projects that are kicking around the sewing room.

3rd Quarter Finish-Along

2015 FAL at On the Windy Side

It’s time to link up our lists of what we plan to finish in the 3rd quarter with Adrianne at On the Windy Side. Normally, I’d go back and add the link to the July 1st post were I outlined a selection of projects from my WIP and TBQ lists. But with all that is going on around here, it’s entirely possible I’ll need a quick finish to say I’ve gotten anything done. Given there is no penalty for not finishing everything on the list, I’m just going to list everything that is in progress, plus a few PIGS.

Works In Progress:

UFO07-01

Quilted Sweatshirt, Just Takes Two, Sisters Swap, Compass Lone Star, Lee’s Christmas Blocks, Lilbet’s Garden, Hexie Hand Project, Hancock Stars BOM, Estate DWR, Faux applique, QIAD Flying Dutchmen Lotto, Sew Scrappy, QAYG String Blocks, Border Class Sampler, Mom’s Thangles BOM, ‘Twas Night Before Christmas I, Sheryl’s Churn Dash, Jane’s Hourglass,  Red DP9, Alphabet BOM, Redwork Snowmen, Lee’s Baskets, Blue Strings, Green DP9, ‘Twas Night Before Christmas II, Tumbler L/E, Candy Sunflower Seed, Green & Cream Swap, Star-A-Day, Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler, String HST, Postage Stamp L/E.  That’s 32.

Tops to Be Quilted:

tops0701

Whitework, 2008 Retreat Swap, Fairy Frost Sunset, Estate Dove in the Window, QIAD Christmas Row Quilt, Thangles II, Machine Quilting Sampler, Nifty Thrifty, Raising Cane, Old Tobacco Row, Mom’s Stacked 4-patch, Black & Bright Sampler, David’s DP9, B & W Strip Twist, ModaU Sampler, 2011 Retreat Mystery (small), Out of the Blue, AAQAL, Christmas BOM, 2011 Retreat Mystery (large), Orange Crush, Pink & Black 4-patch Stacked Posie, Diamond Links, B&W stacked 4-patch, Blue & Brown SBS swap, 2012 Retreat Mystery, Christmas Crazy 8, Stack-n-Whack, Scrap Patch Hearts, Baby B&M stacked 4-patch, Pink & Brown. That should be 31 tops.

Projects In Grocery Sacks:

newprojects

Squedge Ruler project, “August A”, the Hardware quilt and a Triangle Frenzy table runner. There are another 9 on my list – 4 of them could probably be broken up and put back into my stash, but I don’t see a hurry since I’m trying not to start anything new.  The other 5 are large projects and I don’t see me starting them any time soon. These 4 pictured are smaller projects and potentially doable over the course of a few days.

Works Hidden In My Mind:

This list fluctuates and doesn’t have fabric picked out – except in my mind. An example  is I really want to make a Trip Around the World set on point using 30’s solids and prints.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for at least 20 years, but other than a few hen-scratched notes, I haven’t done anything about it. So, given the state of this list, they are officially excluded from the Finish Along.

So the above is my official 3rd Quarter Finish-Along list. The question is not will I finish everything — it’s a given that I won’t — but will I finish ANYTHING on the list. Since I’m doing my best to not start anything new if I get anything finished I hope the answer is yes.

June Recap / July and 3rd Quarter Goals

I may not have sat at the sewing machine much in June, but I made the most of the time I had at the machine.

The smaller of the three Disappearing 9-Patches became a top:

davidsquilt

About 1/3 of the second DP9 blocks are made and 22 of the Sew Scrappy Blocks are done:

dw0615

3 Star-A-Day Blocks were made:

3Star-A-Day

That’s 165 blocks for the Prairie Moon Quilts 350 Block Project.

There is nothing to report on for the UFO Parade, but others had finishes in June.

So what’s on the agenda for July and the 3rd Quarter?  Well, more than I realistically can get done even if we weren’t still working in the backyard, aka “The Jungle”.

On deck are the following.

  • Finish the red DP9. What’s not on the design wall is sitting here next to the sewing machine.
    reddp9
  • The Green DP9 is currently my travel project — not that I have lots of plans for traveling.greendp9
  • Finish the Sew Scrappy top. All that is left is the rest of these blocks. I need 38 more, then I can start assembling the quilt top.
  • sewcrappy2I would like to get Diamond Links finished.  The last couple of rows and the borders need quilting.DiamondLinks
  • Finally, in July I’d like to get more stars made for the Star-A-Day quilt.

The rest of the 3rd Quarter goals for the 2015 Finish-A-Long include new projects (shh! I’m supposed to be working on my UFOs.)

newprojects Squedge Ruler project, “August A”, the Hardware quilt and a Triangle Frenzy table runner.

UFOs are on my list. These tops need borders, more blocks, or setting together (the orange and purple is Orca Bay and it was finished in May!)

nottopsyet

Candy Sunflower Seeds, Star-A-Day , String HST, Sister Swap Blocks, Alphabet BOM

And last, but not least there are quilts that are partially quilted.

quiltasyougo

Cream & Green swap, Whitework, Hancock Star BOM, a quilted sweatshirt & the Compass Lone Star

Along the way I’ll be working on the new Bonnie Hunter Leader/Ender Challenge – Tumblers.  I’ve already started by cutting a tumblers from my 2-1/2″ shirt strips that were previously designated at “Rectangle Wrangler” so this does not add to my UFO count.

Well, I’m off to stitch a few DP9 blocks to say I’ve sat at my sewing machine today.

Goals for July and the 3rd Qtr Finish Along

3rdQtr

Boy do I think I’m dreaming if I expect to FINISH all of these projects by the end of the 3rd Quarter.  Most of these are recycled from earlier in the year and that’s OK because I am getting things done.  So what’s on the 3rd quarter list?

  • Diamond Links – it is partially quilted
  • Easy As Pie – I haven’t touched this in at least a month
  • Double Wedding Ring — just two corners to quilt and then bind
  • Quilt A – this would be a new quilt
  • Quilt C – this is a new quilt as well
  • Yellow Thangles BOM – needs to be quilted
  • Green & Cream Swap – working on it quilt-as-you-go
  • Hardware – a new start
  • Compass Lone Star – a new start
  • String HST – it’s not very big and needs borders and quilting
  • Jared Takes a Wife – I’d love to get this quilted
  • Eeyore – Must get this quilted
  • Scrappy Trips – needs to be quilted
  • Christmas Row Quilt – needs to be quilted
  • Hancock Stars BOM – working on it quilt-as-you-go

There are other quilt tops in pieces that I want to finish this year but don’t necessarily expect to get quilted. Since the list above is for the 3rd Quarter Finish Along over at The Littlest Thistle – I won’t list them unless I really think I can get them finished by the end of the year. As soon as the linky is up I’ll link to it HERE.

JulyGoals

So, realistically what do I think I can get done in July?

  • Quilt and finish Eeyore – it’s up first
  • Quilt and finish Scrappy Trips on the treadle
  • Quilt, by hand, one of the two remaining corners of the Double Wedding Ring
  • Finish Candy Sunflower seeds (that’s one of the borders)
  • Make the “R” and the “S” blocks for the Alphabet BOM

To the best of my knowledge I have not forgotten to make any quilts. I do have to finish sewing a hanging sleeve,  but I should be able to knock that out tonight. I might just get everything done this month.

Design Wall Monday – 1/24/21

The blocks are finished for the 3rd quarter of the wedding quilt. Now to get them stitched together.  I also finished 2 Easy Breezy blocks as my leader/ender.  Can you see them?

  • 350 Challenge = 55
  • Easy Breezy = 100

I’m linking up with Small Quilts and Doll Quilts for Design Wall Monday.

Finished (or Not) Friday – 1/22/21

No new pictures, as Thursday evening was a long night at work. So here’s a recap of what I’ve accomplished in the last 7 days.

Runabout Bag by Lazy Girl Designs. I was able to cross this off my 2021 Personal Quilting Challenge # 1.

Not thread and needle, but I made a Mardi Gra mesh wreath.

I’m well on the way to finishing the 3rd quarter of the wedding quilt.

I just have one short end of binding to stitch down on Moda U.

  • 350 Challenge = 35
  • Easy Breezy = 96

I’m linking up with Alycia Quilts for Finished (or Not) Friday.

The Red Disappearing 9-Patch

reddp92

This is the 3rd of 3 Disappearing 9-Patches – for this year.  Since I made it the same as the Green Disappearing 9-Patch, I’m going with the same measurements. It measured about 79″ x 94″ before washing. Based on the picture, I’m guessing it’s about 75″ x 90″ after washing. Hobb’s Tuscany Bleached 100% Cotton batting was used (it’s what I had on hand). It was quilted on my DSM. I used my CarioQuilt thread in Military Gold. The quilting on this one is in a diagonal pattern similar to the Orange DP9.

All the fabric is from recycled shirts, except for the red. I purchased two yards of it, and had enough fabric to make the quilt and a pillowcase. Again I made the cuff narrower as I needed a red cuff on another pillowcase.

I started cutting the squares on May 19th, finished the top July 17th and finished the quilt on December 13th. It is on my 3rd Quarter Finish Along List make that my 4th Quarter Finish Along list that On the Windy Side is hosting and of course it is a quilt on my personal Crazy Challenge II list.

Here’s the pillowcase — it’s the body of the case is from a bolt of fabric I bought several years ago.

Green Disappearing 9-Patch – The Blog Post

greenD9ptemp

Well, I  had great hopes and dreams of a cool photo shoot of all of the quilts, but that simply is not going to happen.  I haven’t been able to get out during the day — except when the wind is blowing hard or it’s raining — neither are conducive to a quilt photo shoot of a single quilt, let alone multiple quilts. So this is it.  The quilt pinned to the shelves in the sewing room.

This is the 2nd of 3 Disappearing 9-Patches.  It measured about 79″ x 94″ before washing. Based on the picture, I’m guessing it’s about 75″ x 90″ after washing. Hobb’s Tuscany Bleached 100% Cotton batting was used (it’s what I had on hand). It was quilted on my DSM. I used my CarioQuilt thread in Military Gold to do some basic straight stitching.

All the fabric is from recycled shirts, except for the green. I purchased two yards of it, and had enough fabric to make the quilt and a pillowcase — well, I made the cuff narrower so I could make a cuff for Nifty Thrifty as well. Bottom line, there’s no green fabric left.

I started cutting the squares on May 19th, finished the top August 20th and finished the quilt on October 31st.  It was part of the November UFO Parade at Aunt Marti’s, one of my finishes for UFO Busting over at Field Trips in Fiber, it is on my 3rd Quarter Finish Along List (it was on the 3rd quarter list, but it’s the 4th Quarter Finish Along List that I need to link to)  for that On the Windy Side is hosting and of course it is a quilt on my personal Crazy Challenge II list.

Ooh — nearly forgot the pillowcase.

Diamond Links

DiamondLinksFrontDoneDiamond Links was the 2007 Mystery Quilt on the Yahoo! Group apocketfullofmysteries owned by Dorothy Young. It’s been a top so long and I’ve gone through a couple of computers I’m not sure I even have the pattern any more. Unlike more recent mysteries where I pull from my stash, most, if not all of the fabric was purchased specifically for this quilt.

A couple of people have commented on the border fabric.  It is Pattern # BTR-4407 from Blank Quilting with a copyright of 2006. The pillowcase fabric is Masquerade IV by fresh designs for Henry Glass & Co. Pattern # 9246. I bought it while back as well.

I rented time on a long arm back in January 2013, but ran into some issues and brought the quilt home. Where it sat and sat and sat. It hit the Crazy Challenge II list as a wedding gift so I needed to get it done. I finished the quilting on my DSM, the used ‘Susie’s Magic Binding’ to quickly bind the quilt.

The quilt also has a bit of ‘back art’

DiamondLinksback

and of course pillowcases.

diamondpillow

A couple of notes on the pictures. Turns out there wasn’t a good place to prevent shadows. I guess I’ve got to get out earlier in the day for shadow free pictures. Cropped out of the first picture, but visible in the second is the temporary hanging sleeve — I simply pinned it on for the pictures.

  • Top Started: January 2007
  • Top Completed: 3/18/2007
  • Quilting Started: January 2012
  • Quilt Completed: 9/30/2015
  • Batting: Warm & Natural
  • Thread: Superior Threads King Tut #40/3 Color # 978 “Rosetta Stone” on the top and Black Bottom Line in the bobbin
  • Measures 74″ x 91″ after washing

This quilt is on my list for the 3rd Quarter Finish Along – but only because I included everything on the list. I’m sending it to Aunt Marti for the UFO Parade, but since I didn’t get the picture until after 5 it will be in next month’s parade. It’s also being sent in for the 2015 UFO Busting over at Field Trips in Fiber.  It is part of my Crazy Challenge II which started August 15th.
