Scrappy Irish Chain

I’ve finished the Scrappy Irish Chain.  I used the pattern from Bonnie Hunter’s Adventures in Leaders and Enders.  The 4 patches were done as leaders/enders — but for two other quilts that I decided I wanted a different look to.  So, I repurposed the 4-patches, found a length of background fabric and completed the quilt top.  It had to age before it was ready to be a quilt.

Details:

  • Repurposed the 4-patches 3/21/12
  • Completed the top 10/11/12
  • 1593 pieces / about 6 yards of fabric – all from stash
  • Wide backing (works out to about 5 yards of 45″ wide fabric) – the only new fabric
  • 8 – 2½” strips for binding – from stash
  • Warm & Natural batting
  • Superior Omni Thread – Light Tan in the top
  • Used just over 3 Super Bob – Cream(?) pre-wound bobbins
  • Continuous Curves in the dark part of the chain
  • Alternative blocks quilted with  G1-10 from Pam Clarke’s book Quilting Inside the Lines
  • Quilted in two sessions on May 9th  & 10th (about 4½  hours total)
  • Finished binding May 13, 2014
  • Quilt top measured 68″ x 83 before washing and 63″ x 79″ after

Edited:

  • Quilted on a rented Nolting long arm – I can’t remember which one.
  • Made a pillowcase to go with it from the backing and binding.

I know, it still looks just like  Piglet. And, no this is not an old picture – you can see the shamrock I made at the quilt retreat a couple of weeks ago sticking out from under the edge on the right. BTW, I’ve decided for the moment the shamrock is an Orphan Block. At some point in the future I may revise the designation, but for now that means I can ignore it guilt-free.

18 Days left in the month. Surely I can make some progress on this top.

New Quilt or UFO?

Since I finished my last couple finishes two weeks ago, I’ve been stalling. You see, I have a quilt to quilt — one with a rapidly approaching deadline — and I’ve been struggling to figure out how to quilt it.  And since it’s a mystery quilt to be published next fall, I can’t post it here to ask for advice.

It hung on my design wall for a week and finally I knew how I wanted to quilt it. But I needed to mark it since the current plan is to quilt it on my DSM.  A week later I have the quilt marked and ready to baste — only it’s not.

Earlier this week I thought it was odd that I came up with a quilting design that completely missed a significant piece of the piecing, but instead of stopping to figure out why, I kept marking the quilt.  Today the plan was to baste the quilt.

When I pulled out the backing I discovered it needed to be pressed again. That required moving the ironing board and I found the drawing of the quilting.  I laid it over the quilt top and sure enough I’ve marked the quilt wrong.  Now I have to figure out what to do, which brings us to the title of the post and the picture above.

This is the year I plan on working my UFOs. I really want to quilt the Scrappy Trips that I just finished on the treadle, but I know I need to quilt something smaller to see if I’m going to like the results.  I know how I want to quilt Scrappy Trips, but need to finish the mystery quilt first.  But given my current frustration have decided I need a break (like I haven’t had one for the past two weeks).

So, this morning I pulled out the dozen left over log cabin blocked from THIS QUILT. I threw them together and added a blue border.  The little quilt currently measures 26″ x 33″ which ought to give me enough space to practice quilting on the treadle without it being too time consuming.

But is this a New Quilt or a UFO that I’ve completed the top of?  I suppose if I get it finished in the next day or two it doesn’t really matter.

What’s On My Design Wall

The plan was to work on the red, white and black Rail Fence. I was going to trim the blocks and Sydney would assemble the quilt top.  The Bobbin Winder fiasco threw that plan off, and then Sydney said the quilt didn’t have a deadline, but she had another that did. Her teacher’s child has been in the hospital and she wanted to give her a quilt.

I’m not positive how it came about, but my husband asked me if I had any partially completed tops Sydney could finish for this quilt. I looked through my UFOs and pulled swap blocks. Between my husband and Sydney they decided the 7 purple blocks and 14 log cabin blocks could be put together into a quilt.  These blocks had been given to me by another quilter who didn’t think she would get around to making anything with them.  I had them on my Quilts In Progress list as two quilts.  They make an awesome quilt together and I get to cross 2 UFOs off my list!

The quilt finishes at about 47″ x 58″. Soft and Bright batting. Yellow thread in the bobbin and top. Quilted in a wavy crosshatch.

Also “completed” this week is Scrappy Trips which I made on my grandmother’s treadle machine.

I know how I want to quilt it, I just have to decide on a backing fabric and decide if I want to attempt to quilt it on the treadle.

Give some stats on your PIGS!

What is your oldest and how old is it?

Light Up The Holidays – a kit for a table topper that I purchased in October 2007.  I think this is one of those “What was I thinking?” purchases.  One of these days I’ll get it put together.  It is not high on my priority list.

Do you have a list of your PIGS and is it current?

Yes.  I have a spreadsheet which lists all of my UFOs/WIPs, PIGs, Quilt Tops, Purchases, and Fabric Usage.  There are 11 PIGS on it.

Stash Report

Three hours at the LQS and I still have used more fabric this year than I’ve purchased.

Saturday was the 2010 UFQ Trunk Show at Heritage Fine Fabrics.  I signed up to get 5 quilts either ready to quilt or quilted and bound – I finished 4 of the 5.  Over the year as we finished each project, we received a FQ as a reward.  At the trunk show, we receive one ticket for each finish for the drawing.  I won a $15 gift certificate.  So, there’s more fabric in my future.

My only purchase was some Lite Steam a Seam 2 for the Crossword Puzzle quilt – which doesn’t count in the stash numbers.  I also signed up for the 2011 UFQ (UnFinished Quilts) Challenge.

2010 Final Countdown Task One

Prairie Moon Quilts is doing 2010 Final Count down challenge. Nothing elaborate, just simple tasks to get us up and in gear.  Here’s task # 1.

Find your oldest UFO and do something about it

I guess it depends on your definition of UFO.  I think generally, quilters think of UFOs as projects which are tossed aside, never to be worked on again unless someone prods  you to.  So, with that definition I guess the “honor” goes to my Christmas BOM which I started August 21, 2003.  For some reason, I’ve kept detailed notes. I can tell you when I made each block that I’ve got completed.

Why is is still languishing?  That’s easy.  I finished all the pieced blocks and all that remain are the applique blocks.  Ok, that and I thought I wanted to make it bigger, so I needed more blocks. I used my perfect “reindeer fabric” on another quilt — it was a perfect brown — and I stole my friend’s stash of the same fabric to finish something else.  And finally, there’s always another project calling my name.

So, what am I going to do about this UFO?  Put it back on the shelf and go with a different definition of UFO.  I’m going to use the simplest definition of UFO — UnFinished Object — meaning the quilt that is the oldest that is not finished– I just happen to be working on it so some might say it’s WIP – Work-In-Progress.  That honor goes to my  Double Wedding Ring  which I started in September 1989.

At the moment it’s stuffed in the basket and tucked behind the table — had to get it out of the way when I cleaned up for Christmas.  I’m sure everyone is tired of reading about this quilt. I missed all of my latest sets of deadlines – Nov 29th our 25th anniversary; Dec 22nd the last day to turn in a  UFQ project at the LQS and Dec 31st the last day to turn in  UFO on my on-line challenge (hey- no way I can quilt 20-21 rings and bind it by midnight Friday).  So, since all my “deadlines” have been missed, I’m simply going to work on this quilt with the intention of finishing it sometime in 2011.  Maybe I can get it done in time to hang in the Guild quilt show in April – wait -that’s another deadline.

Seriously though, my 3rd oldest UFO — one that is stuffed in a corner and not being worked on – is a BOM from April 2005.

This one got set aside for all of the usual reasons. – found something else to start, not excited by the setting, etc.  This one I have a plan for in 2011.  It’s quilt #12 on my UFO Challenge for Judy.  It’s on both lists — needs to be pieced and needs to be quilted since I’m doing it quilt-as-you-go — so there’s no getting around it when she calls # 12.

Well, I hope this listing of my 3 oldest UFOs – regardless of definition meets the challenge issued.

Judy’s UFO Challenge 2011

I’m not doing so well with Finn’s New Year’s Eve UFO Challenge. I had great hopes to finish 3 pretty good size projects, but as usual when I make plans like that life gets in the way.  I don’t see myself finishing anything else this year – not that I’m not still plugging away on various projects.  They are just going slower than I anticipated.

That’s not to say I’ve given completely up on my UFOs.  One day (in a time far, far, away) they will become finished quilts to be used.   To help me whittle down my extremely long list (see the Tops To Be Quilted and Quilts In Progress tabs above), I’m going to play along with Judy and her UFO Challenge next year.  Instead of listing quilts I’ve “got” to finish, I’ve picked quilts that I’ve passed over in the past to work on something “more important” or “more fun” (i.e. a new quilt).    My list of quilts and the rules which I’ve tweaked (Judy said we could :-)) are on the UFO Challenge 2011 tab.

Chain of Stars is Finished

This is my Red, White & Blue Chain of Stars.  Started in 2007, this was the first mystery quilt pattern I wrote.  I did this scrappy version and a version in Pink & Black using just three fabrics.  The photo is not great, but if tomorrow is as pretty as today was, I’ll take it outside to see if I can get a better picture.

It is quilted with basic straight line quilting on the diagonal, through the blue chains and diagonal sides of the star points.  This extends to the red border. Stitch in the ditch between the red and beige border and then curved stitching in the red border reminiscent  of bunting.  At least that’s what I was trying to do.  I used my favorite khaki thread for the quilting.

The quilt measures approximately 62 x 79 and there are two matching pillow cases.

Although this is not one of the three UFOs I plan on finishing for Finn’s New Year’s Eve UFO Challenge, it was a UFO.

New Year’s Eve UFO Challenge

Finn is having a New Year’s Eve UFO Challenge. No prizes, just the satisfaction in seeing how many projects collectively the participants can get done by the end of the year.  I’ve listed three as my challenge number.  Admittedly, two of these quilts are on other UFO lists, but I’m all for all the support I can get to see that I get these quilts done.

#1 – The Double Wedding Ring

This is from a couple of weeks ago.  I think I have one more ring to quilt and I’ll be half way through the quilting. (I’ve just about given up on having this quilt finished by November 29th, so the next date would be December 18th).

#2 – Cream & Green Quilt

This is the other quilt on one of my other UFO challenge lists.  The blocks are from a swap I participated in the Fall of 2006.  I’m quilting each block and sashing then setting them together.  There are 20 blocks and this one is due December 31st.

#3 – Compass Lone Star

This is another quilt-as-you-go project.  I need to get the background quilted and then start adding the pieced borders.  The plan is to have a border of LeMoyne Stars and who knows what else — I’ll have to pull my pattern and see. This quilt is not on any UFO list –this year.  Both it and the Cream & Green were on a list 2 years ago and as you can see I didn’t get them done.
