What’s On My Design Wall

A couple of years ago I attempted to quilt this on a Little Gracie. The tension was horrible, so I pulled all the quilting out and the quilt has sat waiting to be quilted again. I pulled it out Friday night, thinking I’d try hand quilting it, but decided quickly that with the Warm and Natural batting and all of the seams on the back, that wasn’t a good idea. So, I pulled out my walking foot and started machine quilting it.

I’m just shy of halfway done. I should be able to finish it up this week. And maybe I’ll also get some work done on my Star Struck. It’s still stuck at 18 blocks on the wall.

Is anyone surprised that Star Struck is still on the wall? We’ve been cleaning and working in the yard, so no quilting has been done since about Tuesday. Although only two new blocks have been added, I now have the gold sewn to all of the blue units. They are also paired up so I can quickly sew together units to make 1/2 blocks — whenever I get back to the sewing machine.

Yes, Star Struck is still on my design wall. But I have done more piecing on it.

When I get these pieces sew together I’ll have completed 40 blocks. I’m aiming for 80, so I still have a way to go.

Technically, those same 16 Star Struck blocks from last week, plus the KVQG BOM Block 1 are on my design wall. However, it’s this baby quilt that I’m really working on. I finished up the quilting Sunday before I had to work, then before I went to bed I started working on the binding. I need to get a label together before I finish stitching the binding down so I can catch it the corner.

Not a whole lot of quilting going on here. My Star Struck blocks are still on the wall – not that I’ve added to them since I got distracted by my Texas Braid. What I’m really working on is Dancing Flowers. This evening, I finished trimming the threads, did touch up quilting and then squared it up. Before I put the binding on, I’m going to make a hanging sleeve – but that implies I can get to the ironing board. I can barely get to my sewing machine this evening.

Dancing Flowers is quilted! At least I think it is. It’s tough quilting with invisible and black thread. I still need to trim the threads on the back and then I’ll know if I did all of the quilting in the cornerstones.

The quilting is not fancy, but I hope it’s effective – 1″ crosshatching behind the applique, stitch in the around each applique piece and stitch in the ditch on the border. I am planning on sewing the hanging pocket on when I stitch on the binding. I hope to get that done this week, but who knows if it will happen or not with everything going on around here.

What’s On My Design Wall

Sunday afternoon I finished piecing the braids for Texas Braid. As I trimmed each braid, I hung them on the wall. My husband came in and said he didn’t like it, so he started playing with them. As soon I have 3 1/2 more braids to trim, then I’ll try it out both ways — as designed and as my husband sees it.

At the top are the Star Struck blocks that I was working on at the beginning of the month. I got distracted trying to finish up Texas Braid and haven’t worked on them in a couple of weeks.

Last week I took a posting on the Guild website as a challenge to get my Texas Braid top completed by tonight’s meeting. Since all 10 of the braids were about 1/2 way to the length I wanted, I thought it might be able to get it done. It didn’t happen. Only 4 made it to the correct length (these braids are folded in half).

Rain usually means more quilting time, but in this instance it meant my brother couldn’t work so he, my sister and I spent all day going through my mom’s things. I don’t know when we’ll get lucky enough again that all 3 of us are available at the same time.

What’s On My Design Wall

This week I have Star Struck on my wall. The current plan is to make 80 blocks — 40 red and 40 blue and set them side by side 8 across by 10 down with no border. All of the quarter blocks have the light square sewn on and stitched twice for bonus red/light and blue/light HST. I’ve just begun working on the gold squares.

What’s on My Design Wall

Stuck to my design wall this morning is the second baby quilt from the leftover Carolina Christmas blocks.  I’ve pieced the borders and have them up on the wall trying to decide if they work.  I’m leaning toward “Yes”.

But what I’m really working on today is the red white and blue Star Struck.  Since this picture was taken, I’ve finished sewing all of the bricks together and have started sewing the 2 1/2″ light squares to the red and blue to make points.
