What’s On My Design Wall

AlphabetBOMA-Z

26 Blocks up on the wall. The last 3 were released together so I knocked them out quickly while I was on a roll.

Z is for ZigZag

Now the goal is to find something to tie all of these shirting and muslin blocks together. Just when I think I have it figured out I decide that perhaps it’s not the best option and go off in another direction. I suspect these blocks are going to have to age a bit before they become a top.

Hop over to Patchwork Times to see what other are working on.

Alphabet BOM Catch UP

DY-catchup

It was August when I made my last Alphabet BOM. Now I’m caught up — at least with the block patterns which have been released.

  • September – Underground Railroad
  • October – Variable Star
  • November – WCTU

I haven’t seen the December or January block, but plan on making them as soon as they are released.  Then I can work on the layout.  In the meantime, here’s a picture of all of them.

T is for Tile Puzzle

The BOM for August is Tile Puzzle.  This block brings me up-to-date, at least until the next block is released.

All of my blocks can be seen HERE. These are part of Dorothy Young’s Alphabet BOM that is being run on the Yahoo! group apocketfullofmysteries. It’s not too late to join.

What’s On My Design Wall

This week I’ve got a couple of thing going on.  First off, I corrected the Rail Fence and Spools block for the Alphabet BOM. It really didn’t take long once I focused.  There are still 7 more blocks, so I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to set 26 blocks.  Nearly every plan I do I either have 1 block left over or need a few more.  But playing in EQ I may have come up with an idea.

Obviously the Letters are simply place holders and if I go with this plan there is no guarantee the blocks will end up in order.

I’ve not forgotten Eeyore — I’ve got the cable marked on the center border.  Now I need to clear the space around the sewing machine so I can finish it up.

Check out the links over at Patchwork Times to see what others are up to this week.

R is for Rail Fence, S is for Spools

DY - Rail Fence

Rail Fence was the June BOM.

DY - Spools

Spools was the July BOM.

Bring on August’s block.  I’m caught up for the moment. Well, on this project.

All of my blocks can be seen HERE. These are part of Dorothy Young’s Alphabet BOM that is being run on the Yahoo! group apocketfullofmysteries. It’s not too late to join.

July Recap / August Goals

JulyAccomplishments

It’s good that I recap what I accomplish each month or I would think I get nothing done.  Much of July was spent working in the yard and or reading.  But then I realize I really did get a few things done.

As part of the yard work, I repainted our windmill. The center of Eeyore was quilted. A set of placemats and coasters was made. I finished quilting the Double Wedding Ring. I made the June BOM block and started on the July block, although I forgot to use muslin as my light. I did some of the embroidery on the next to last block of the Christmas BOM. Not pictured, on the 1st, I finished “the forgotten quilt”.

So, what do I have planned for August?

Goals-August

In no particular order:

  • Finish Eeyore
  • Make the June, July and August blocks (R, S, & T)
  • Attach the binding to the DWR
  • Clean up the sewing room — it’s gotten deep.

There are other things which need to be done as well – labels and pillowcases for at least 5 quilts; get Scrappy Trips done – I still need to make the backing; start the quilt I’m making for a friend’s church auction and possibly quilt, bind and label another quilt for a gift if I can arrange time on the long arm at the end of the month.  And of course this short list doesn’t put a dent in my 2014 Goals which is a just a small subset of my master UFO list.

One of These Things…

is not like the other. Well, none of them are alike, but one doesn’t have the muslin.

Yes, I’ll be making a new Rail Fence Block. And starting over on the Spool block for July.

What’s On My Design Wall

coastersdone

There’s not much on my design wall today.  I’ve done virtually nothing in the sewing room for the past two weeks.  I did finally finish these coasters.  The  bias binding was driving me crazy. They measure 3-1/2″ across so it’s a tight turn as compared to other curves I’ve done in the past. This is what I learned:

  • Cut the bias binding at 1-1/2″
  • Do not double it as on quilts
  • Use a 1/4″ seam
  • Do a straight join

I was even able to machine stitch the binding down.

On the wall proper is the June BOM for the Alphabet BOM. R is for Rail Fence.

This week the weather is supposed to be relatively cool, so other than the block for July, I’m not sure if I’ll get any more time with the sewing machine.  There’s more yard work to do before Friday night.

All I Needed Was Thread

shopping0607

All I needed was the black thread for Eeyore and maybe a different shade of pink thread for Piglet’s ears. After three stops I came back with a little bit more.

The first stop was a rummage sale at a church around the corner. Naturally, I was looking for shirts. They must have a clothing closet/bank because the only clothes I found were for little kids. But I spotted two rolls of tracing paper for 25¢ each. I think I’m going to like the narrower width. The roll I have is 24″ wide.

Then it was off to Jo-Ann’s for the thread, and if they had freezer paper I would get some since I hadn’t gotten around to locating any. Unless that package on the left has some magic properties that I’m not familiar with yet, I won’t buy it again.  The package of 10 sheets on the left cost the same (if I didn’t have a coupon) as the package of 50 sheets on the right which I bought at my LQS and I know I like the stuff on the right.

I briefly thought about going to the LQS, but it’s three times as far away. Fortunately a friend called me just as I walked in the door as asked if I wanted to go to the new quilt shop.  She was speaking of Creative Hands Quilt Shop & Decorative Painting Store which recently relocated. Sure, why not? And we were off to the store where I found the freezer paper I really wanted, a FQ for the Halloween pile, a new to me product Print N Fuse and a pressing sheet with the hopes that I would find my missing one.

While we were there I nearly signed up for the Plain & Fancy BOM, but I’m not sure how that’s going to work with my schedule.  I’ll have to make up my mind soon….

Now, back to Eeyore.

Q is for Quartered Star

DY - Q Avara

The letter for this May is Q. Dorothy calls this block Quartered Star.  Nine months to go, but the blocks all go together quicker than picking the fabric out, so it’s not too late to join.
